The magnetic power connector has saved me many times (on my Surface 2). LOVE IT. And I was doubtful on the Alcantara (sp?) but after 2.5 years of use, I can't imagine going back to metal. Oddly, Surface 2 laptop doesn't have any of the flex.

if I wanted an alternative to my MacBook Air 13 inch, then I would definitely go with the metal version of the Surface Laptop and choose platinum for the outer shell as that would be the closest I could get to the standard silver metal outer shell on my current MacBook Air

Mate.. It's got Usb C charging capabilities too! Alcantara since 1st Gen surface and lots of people prefer it... I think the older surface laptops were a little sturdier as they were on solid piece - but after the surface laptop 3, they used separate pieces so that it would be more repairable (At the cost of some sturdiness)

Very honest review. I also think there are other better options for the same price (or even less). For users that don't need to connect many other devices to their laptop, I think this one is fine, but me personally, I definitely need HDMI and more USB A ports.

You should be able to charge this laptop via the USB-c port as well, since you can on the Surface Laptop 3. So while there is a proprietary connector for charging, it isn't locked into using that as the only method to charge the device.

Microsoft has done a gr8 job with the surface line. I am using Surface Book 2 since 2018 and love it to date. Windows 11 OS is fine-tuned and compliments the surface laptops. Hardware is gr8 u talk about the keyboard, screen, camera, tablet mode or the pen everything is just mind-blowing. The battery life is still good. The other good thing to mention is that I have never heard the fan going. Many times when I am on a office call with my collegues, I can hear their laptop fan like a chopper going in the background. Also, the windows hello - face login feature is very handy and can't go without it. Once a year I reset the laptop and do a fresh OS install and it has never given me any problems. My only regret is that I went for the 8 GB Ram model at the time and sometimes when I have several apps open and if I am on a vdo call, I get low memory warning. Shame I can't increase the RAM on this. Agree the limitation on the ports, I am ok with SB2 and its ports, but getting a new laptop in 2022 with just 1 USB-A and 1 USB-C port will make me think twice.

The port being proprietary is because it's essentially Magsafe... If you trip over the cord, your whole expensive laptop won't test gravity along with your own trip to the floor... which is the point... Apple had that right honestly and that was a pro for Macs back in the day. Now? not so much. Charging capability using the USB c wouldn't have hurt though.

I think you beat up a bit hard on power while missing some stuff there. Yes it comes with a proprietary surface charger, but you can also charge it over the USB-C port. Also the "Surface Connect" port has more function than just power. You can use it to connect to a dock with 4x USB-C ports & 2x USB-A ports. OR to any number of dongles, for instance one with a USB-C 3.1. I think that the choice not to include Thunder Bolt is important to mention, as it was a choice. Microsoft has said they don't want to do thunderbolt because of security concerns. Only way to change their minds is to have enough reviewers beat them up about it :) I think you've hit your keyboard impressions on the head. it's a nice feeling keyboard. For your final thoughts. you talked about how you don't think it fits in very well to the work from home / office environment because of the ports. Again, I think the dock is the answer. I have a dock at home, and a dock at work. My surface laptop travels with me to both desks and I only need to connect one magnetic cable to give me two monitors, keyboard and mouse, wired ethernet, charging, and a headset. I was also somewhat disappointed you didn't talk about the trackpad. Since the Surface Laptop 3 I have found that the trackpad is exceptional for a windows laptop.
@simpromovie

I think you miss some things about the ports. The power connector is of the "MagSafe" type which even Apple is not offering any more! And this is also the Microsoft Dock connector which allows you to connect 2*4K displays (and everything else you might need) which is a good alternative to a Thunderbolt port. On the other hand you can charge the Surface laptop with a standard USB-C power supply if you like...You also did not mention the best feature of this laptop: the 3:2 aspect ratio display! This a clearly better than the MacBook 16:10 displays....

Don’t many window’s laptops have their own charging cables, not a universal charging method. I recall that a Dell laptop had a different charger than an Acer. Propriety chargers seem like a nitpick that you’d have to give every laptop. Mind you, that is before usb-c/thunderbolt. I want to say that laptops still have proprietary chargers even if they have a usb-c charging alternative/ just the addition of that port. That’s if they have a usb-c and capable of using that for charging. I don’t think that it’s worth dinging any laptop if they can charge via usb-c/thunderbolt. If apple removes a port for a mag-safe charging solution, ding away, but that seems more like a non-issue nitpick.

Yes, seen some technical reviews and the reason why the AMD version gets good battery life is that it is heavily throttled, almost to the point where it performs like a 3-year-old i5. Saying that this is an ultrabook, so even at that performance, it will handle most basic tasks like Office, browsing and media. Apple Silicon uses the four efficiency cores to do the same thing and this is probably the solution AMD and MS came up with to get some good PR and battery life (being oversold by creators?). Of course, that means that what should be a powerful multicore Ryzen 5 is shockingly slow doing anything intensive when on the battery! Whereas Apple Silicon just switches to the performance cores. Also, using the Ryzen 4000 series means you are buying an already dated (2020) SoC. That would be fine if it was priced as other 4000 series ultrabooks are, but it is significantly more expensive. The Intel models are strictly for Window's superfans that love MS and are willing to pay for that privilege. Away from performance, this is a dated design (probably the last year) and the glossy screen is a poor choice. The flex on the keyboard is annoying but my three-year-old Surface Laptop has survived with no issues. No Thunderbolt is the Eighth Wonder of the World, and no one has figured why MS has done this? Price is typical MS so it is what it is and there is far better value elsewhere. The 720p webcam is okay but for who this was targeted for (business and Enterprise) I was expecting better. The storage speeds are meh and although not really important for the workload, it is just another tick in the cheapskate's box. Hard to buy away from the fandom.

I purchased the Surface Laptop 4 last week. I don't see why you have a problem with a power connection. It does not take away from the other ports. I like that the charger plug is angled and the wire is out of the way. The purchase of the 15" computer I purchase is for emails, internet, Word, and watching videos. The 512 storage is what i went as anything less is just silly. The keyboard, the power supply and power for what I need is just perfect. The CPU uses 4.3 gigs of ram to run the programs I use. So with the 8 gigs of ram, it is enough. For daily task, the speed with of AMD is very fast. This is not a gaming laptop and if I wanted to waste hours a day to play videos I would have purchased a Dell high powered laptop. Face recognition is really great. The slim body and the look is really nice. The 15" has the metal and the keys don't flex like the 13". I am a happy campier.

It’s a preferences, the alcantara flex doesn’t matter at all since it’s quite soft and unless you press relatively hard and is perticular enough to look down and see the flex. To this day the surface still has my favorite laptop to type

Love the Alcantara cover and had never a problem with this "flex". If don't want to crack your display after some time choose the Alcantara! The metal cover will do this because there is no rubber bezel around the display....

Nothing wrong with windows it's been streamlined just say you like mac and keep it moving. I will say windows does needs to make effort to bring android into the OS. Because airdrop and imessage on the Macs alone make them worth it most the times.

Nice review as always. I somehow disagree with you on the keyboard. I have the surface laptop 2 and by far it is the best windows laptop keyboard even better than the new M1 Mac, at least for me. I like the Microsoft Surface Laptop because they are reliable and they share something with Apple which is making something that actually works. Other manufacturers in the windows world make so many innovations and creations but they forgot the basics which are: keyboard, trackpad and reliability for which in my opinion Microsoft and Apple are perfect in.

I guess this computer is way better than how you portrayed it (I don't use a surface). You used the MacBook as a benchmark for how a computer should be? There are computers with way better keyboards than MacBooks, but you placed the MacBook at the top. I don't see how they qualified to be there. Also, you said you liked the design of the Surface because it look MacBooky; like what? Overall, it's a good review, but just like the Surface Laptop 4, it has many flaws.

The MacBook has one of the bet rated keyboards of any laptop and face it, the M1 chip is the new benchmark and no Intel or AMD processor competes with it.

This thing is strictly a casual use device that is priced too high. It's probably the best all around Windows Thin & Light, but not as powerful or as cheap as a MBA M1. No thunderbolt, so the iGPU can't be augmented with an external dGPU. The color gamut is low average so it's not great for color critical work. The last gen AMD processor is super gimped on battery so it can compete with M1 battery life. I really wish they would sell something like a "Surface Laptop Pro". 5-7% thicker with a faster processor thats power capped for thermals, wider screen gamut, thunderbolt.

I mean I know they are Windows Laptops from Microsoft themselves but they arent the best windows laptops at all by any margin, especially for productivity, The dell xps is always awesome, then you got the Razor laptops, But if you want the best performance, build quality and features for work there is the new HP Probook x360 with Ryzen 5800u. 8 cores 16 threads zen 3 architecture. Raw power that beats the Mac awesome build quality and price to performance ratio, also since its running on the x86 platform wider range of application support and versatility, user upgradeable storage. The only thing Mac has thats better would be the sound system. Every other ways the probook is just better unless you are hooked into the Apple ecosystem. I know because Im using the Probook with 4500u processor.

My alcantara 13.5 inch Laptop 4 seems to have a much more stable keyboard deck - it doesn't flex as much as yours. I just got mine yesterday - did yours get worse over the week? You can also charge via USB-C incidentally - think of the surface connector more like a proprietary dock connector (similar to what Lenovo has often used on the underside) - certainly less good than a thunderbolt plug, but not quite as bad as it could be.

@Isaaq i guess if you want intel’s best offering in a thin laptop, this is the PC to get. Really don’t think it holds its value well, though, in comparison to more capable and slightly thicker PCs around the same budget or to the M1 chip.

I bought a 13.5 inch Surface Laptop 4 with the Intel i5 and the battery life is abysmal. I get about 4.5 to 6 hours max with just web browsing and writing and screen brightness at less than 50%. There are a lot of complaints online about battery life, while KZfaqrs and journalists have raved about how good it is. This makes me suspicious that Microsoft sent tweaked units to reviewers 🤷‍♂️.
