The Surface Pro 8 is the Surface device we’ve been waiting for. It’s a well-made, modern Windows convertible powered by Intel’s 11th-Gen Core processors. It starts at $1,099, a price that doesn’t include the keyboard or stylus. But its high price doesn’t make it a bad device-just one that’s perfect for a fairly specific audience.

I mean it is a touchscreen, pen capable, 2800 x 1920, 120Hz panel with a computer inside it in light body. How many productivity notebooks can you find with exactly that at $1100? Plus, its Microsoft: like Apple, they have their "branding tax". This isn't exactly suprising especially since Microsoft offered a i3 4GB RAM 128GB at $900 for the Pro 7 without the keyboard or pen last year. Better resolution, refresh rate, i5, 8GB RAM and upgradable SSD seems like a better deal than the 7 for the added $200. Most people aren't going to get it at launch because it's price will fall at around Black Friday/Christmas/New Year anyway. Also most people interested in the surface most likely already have a keyboard and pen to attach so don't need to buy it again. Only thing that desperately needs to improve is using AMD Ryzen 5000 processors or at least higher powered H series Intel processors. 4 cores shouldn't be a thing in 2021.

It has always seemed absurd to me selling the keyboard separately. I can’t imagine anyone using it purely as a tablet. Like I understand selling the pen separately (and keyboard for iPads) as not everyone will be using one and seems more of an optional extra, but keyboard seems like a necessity for surface pro.

Eh, all depends what you're using the device for. Bit of light browsing and media handled through Windows Store apps? Probably don't need to touch a keyboard. Using standard Windows applications or tapping out a hundred words a minute for work of hobby, yeah, probably best to get a keyboard. But even then, a cheap bluetooth one will do the same job if you only need to use it occasionally.
@eilois
@eilois 2 жыл бұрын
some people think that "keyboard" such as Microsoft or ipad magic is not good enough. Even with Apple magnetic stand features. They will buy a proper keyboard instead of these two. At least people who choose desktop OS over mobile iPad OS will. Well it is better since that's just an option, the price tags alone mean "We don't expect you to bought this, but pay attention that it is not worth it" kind of vibe. All you need is wireless keyboard with dongle or Bluetooth that would last year or two in single charge or replacement battery.

$1879 for a device with 256GB is absolutely insane in 2021 You can literally get a M1 13” MacBook Pro with 16GB of ram and 1TB of storage for $20 more from Apple. And it’s not like their storage or ram upgrades come cheap in the first place. Also, the M1 easily outpaces the i7-1185G7 in Geekbench. M1 Single Core: 1705 Multi Core: 7381 i7-1185G7 Single Core: 1417 Multi Core: 4854 And if you prefer 120Hz/Tablet form factor, 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 512GB, M1, MiniLED, Apple Pencil, and Magic Keyboard is $2 cheaper than their review unit. And to anyone saying that you have to buy both to get all those features, no you don’t. You either primarily use Surface Pro as a laptop or a tablet, picking either an iPad or a MacBook doesn’t significantly handicap you. I agree Apple is constraining iPadOS and they should provide a touchscreen option for MacBook’s (though I doubt I would ever want to use it). But while the Surface Pro is a jack of all trades master of none, iPad and MacBook are each best in their class.

You are paying for the form factor and the huge possibilities that come with it. To have the same experience on Apple, you need to buy the Macbook M1 (not 120Hz, not touch, no pen, classic laptop) AND an iPad Pro (for 120Hz screen, pen and touch and thinness and portability). And a keyboard case for your iPad Pro i guess. Two devices, thousands of dollars... that you can get with a single device, the Surface Pro 8. And the Surface basically has almost no competition, almost no one else makes a decent Windows tablet like this. So yea, I guess they are expensive, but if you think about it, maybe they still worth it

Of course cheaper would be nicer, but the price is reasonable considering there's no other device offering the same specs/performance. I might consider upgrading from my SP6 once I'm sure Windows 11 is a good user experience. Despite the overheating, my SP3 still works as a sub-office computer. Considering the lack of repairability of these devices, Surface Pro has been a reliable business solution.

Not really. SP7+ was the only decent Win tablet specs wise, and that came with a cheap pen with plenty of diagonal jitters and a screen incapable of handling 4000 levels of pressure. It was a nice device for office work, but SP8 is the first one of this line I would suggest towards artist, for technical drawings and in general for more taxing software on the go. The much better pen and running Win11 - a much better OS for touch screen with Teams integration - also means you get a better whiteboard and writing experience. SP always had the brilliant 2-1 for factor, only Lenovo came close to it, but cheap hw and tools not up for their tasks hold it down until now. But now we got overpriced hw as a huge counterweight!

Please know this is not bragging as I'm not all that impressed with it. I've been using Apple products since 1983, and over time, my allegiance to the platform is running thin. With the release of Windows 11 and the refinement of the Microsoft Surface line, I'm planning to switch camps. My last two Apple MacBook/Pros broke twice, and they didn't last as long as the older Apple MacBook series. In my view, Apple is now no better than some WinTel machines. This is a solid review, but I don't agree with the excuse about the top and bottom bezel, especially the top. I have no issues holding the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7S+ with its much thinner bezels and most people hold it by the sides, not the bottom and top. Despite the comments about how modern it is, that is still too chunky. It's only modern compared to the older versions of the device which were antiquated from a bezel standpoint. So with regard to the bezels, I don't agree with the praise in 2021. Also, I agree with all the other comments about the price. Way too high for what it being offered.

That price tag is steep, especially for a mid-spec model, even if you skimp on an SSD and upgrade it later it is still quite a chunk of cash, but it might be worth the premium for that beautiful super light form factor. I will wait for a price drop or perhaps an future AMD version which may offer better battery life and better pricing in lieu of Thunderbolt, if it ever sees the light of day that is. But it is safe to say it is indeed the Surface Pro most of us were hoping for!

Well, the Surface Pro line has always been far from wallet-friendly. I remember when I bought my first Surface device back in 2017, it cost nearly as much as this model does considering that the keyboard and the pen has been sold separately and how limited the storage they has provided since then. And note that the standard warranty only last for 1 year, which is below par with its competitors except Apple. My biggest concern about this device is its battery life. Despite the improvement made this year, the battery health may deteriorates rapidly like its predecessors do, some of which even swelled severely, causing issues like chassis distortion.

The pricing is ridiculous. $1800 with tax is similar to decent midrange gaming laptops with a higher refresh rate, upgradeable internals, more power + GPU...honestly, if someone really needs that form factor...there's a bunch of options. @jamesw2831 2 жыл бұрын
@@shadowflar3 I'm not offended. I'm saying that the price/features set just does not match here. And popular opinion is not the gotcha that you think it is here. 8GB/128GB storage and a core i5 for $1099 is ridiculous when prior models started at $799. I owned multiple Surface devices and I have been disappointed despite the good form factor. I also guarantee that its sustained performance is weaker than other comparable devices meaning that even how far you can push the device...isn't far. The lack of a Ryzen U series option is also a massive miss as Ryzen U processors, though not compatible with TB4, run cooler and more efficiently. Sure it's gonna sell, but this is ridiculous. Keyboard and pen aren't included in the $1099 which would make it more acceptable. No matter what excuse you use, this is an atrocious value.

I’ve seen videos where they say that is actually Apple’s plan. Apple raised the prices to make their competition raise their prices. But because the competition don’t have the logistics of Apple. Apple can then lower prices and sell more higher quality hardware while the comp can’t really do that
@dpodjasek
@dpodjasek 2 жыл бұрын
@@burnttoastbrain Microsoft definitely could afford to lower the prices... they're no small fry. But, they have the additional complexity of not wanting to appear too aggressive on the pricing front to their hardware partners. They don't want to be competitive to HP and Dell. The Surfaces were purposely designed as expensive aspirational devices, and leave a LOT of room for lower priced alternatives from 3rd party vendors.
