Well, changing the gasket was a temporary fix, but it didn't last.
Luckily, I have the tools to flatten the mating surfaces on the manifold, so that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Enjoy!

True! The whole "old cars are more reliable" may not be true, but if they go wrong, it takes a crescent wrench and a screw driver to fix them up! I'd rather swap a head gasket on this puppy than change the oil on our '06 Focus because it sits so low you can't even get a wrench (let alone a drain pan) underneath to open the drain plug Needles to say it'd be some special odd-size Super-Torx for which a wrench costs more than the entire car is worth.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! It's obvious that the first tool you need in your toolbox is patience. :-) I love the drives on the country roads. It gives you a chance to show what she can do. 26:13 "I'm not going to do the 70Km because it's raining but, you know 60 Km should be doable." 26:20 "Maybe 65". 26:24 "68". 26:27 "Woo-Hoo!!!" 26:33 "We're doing 80!" Now THAT'S how you enjoy your Model A! Thank you for this.

Patience is indeed one of the skills I am most thankful to have acquired. Being able to do things the right way without cutting corners is always worth it, once you see the result! Regarding the "reckless driving sequence", it must have been the downhill part that made me realise the manifold was sealed up for good and let me switch from "anxious testing mode" to "enjoy the ride mode" :D

I had to do the same on both my Austin 7's, well I paid someone to do as I do not have access to the machines. The other factor is that the modern gaskets are not as good as the originals, which were "full fat" asbestos in a sheet of copper sandwich, further superior to the modern foil things. Great to see the improvements, hope you are enjoying the driving experience, I love driving the vintage cars! Thanks for sharing! Greetings from the UK!

with some machining capabilities, you can do about anything. for sure that a warped manifold is mostly due to parts machined as cast ( no stress relief ) and attempting to stop the leak by overtightening will lead to a cracked manifold. very good video

My understanding is that the gland rings were obsoleted from Ford production (in 1929 maybe?). I did not use gland rings the last time I had the manifolds off my 1930 daily driver. That was about four years ago. No issues.
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 3 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, the gland rings are a leftover from the Model T era, where exhaust and intake manifold were two separate pieces held on with strap clamps and would require six hands to properly align while bolting them down. Having the gland rings would allow you to rest the exhaust manifold onto the block so you can deal with the intake manifold.

Stone windowsill makes an adequate surface plate, clever. 1.50 mm out of flat is excessive. I am sure you have considered making solid non split exhaust gland rings. H13 (DIN 1.2344) steel could be an option, it is hard to machine.

While most reproduction mufflers have a smaller flaring that mates to the exhaust manifold, requiring the internal sleeve or other way to seal the joint, mufflers made by Aries Limited (www.amuffler.com) are made to Ford blueprints and do NOT need anything except the Ford muffler clamp. I've had one of those on my car for 30 years.
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Using flared joints and a clamp around it is how many other cars up until the 80s managed to seal their exhaust system up for good. Once my repro muffler has rusted through, it'll get swapped for a stainless Aries, but for now, I'll make do with what I've got.

Awesome video. Those glands i bet are the reason for the leak. In the future if you ever want a project I would make them one piece from stainless. As for the manifold being a reproduction, it is quite possible. But it is equally possible the exhaust manifold is stock.
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure about that, too. When I tightened the manifold bolts the very first time around, I felt the torque gradually coming up and needing quite a bit of re-torquing after the first drive. Tells me that I was not actually tightening the manifold against the gasket but deforming the gland ring - which lost its tention after one heat cycle. For now, I hope I won't have to take that manifold off for a long time, but when I do, stainless sounds like a great suggestion! In my opinion, the manifold looks too pristine to have lived through 90 years of hot and cold - it is completely corrosion-free!

Super Arbeit - RESPEKT.

This video was incredible! I have an exhaust leak problem right now and this was extremely instructive. On the insert in between the manifold and the muffler pipe at the clamp are you using a piece of pipe that is straight or does it truncate or taper down in size. I think mine needs to be straight at 1&3/4 inches. Thanks ! Subscribed! Keep up the great content
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks alot - and I'm glad I could help. The pipe has two different diameters - I didn't take any measurements, but they are obtainable from Model A parts suppliers - they're called "Exhaust Connector sleeve". Thank you for the subscription - my channel does not focus singularily on the Model A, so don't be irritated about some niche parts manufacturing, old tech repair and so on - the Model A is a regular guest on the channel :)

Thank alot! I'm making use of the so-called "waggon wheel effect". Since a video is basically just a set of pictures played in quick succession, if you take a picture every time the running machine is in the same spot and play it back, it looks like the machine is standing still, despite actually moving. In my case, this can be done very easily in 2nd speed with a timelapse factor of 25. If you use an editing software, you can try out manually what works best for you. You can also end up with all sorts of funny effects... The ram moving forwards and backwards at the same time, for example.

From a UK viewpoint, the right turn at the roundabout was TERRIFYING! (If you want to feel my fear, just left-right mirror the video and watch) More seriously - you *need* a proper surface plate. Just buy a cheap Chinese granite one, 12" x 18" (300mm x 500mm), which gives a 24" (550mm) diagonal. This is big and accurate enough for most things (unless you're going for Tom Lipton/Rob Renzetti/Stefan Gotteswinter style) You can also use it to check (improve) a cheap straight edge :-)

To be honest, I've really grown attached to the window sill - people always ask "what setup did you use to get the steam engine aligned so well" - and their eyes almost pop out when I show them xD My shop teacher told me to work as precise as NECESSARY, not as POSSIBLE - and it's a bit more exciting to choose the jury-rig path :D
