It is rare when considering how many people play in the ocean world wide. Millions. The ocean is THEIR habit and we are invading their space... we take a risk by going in the water... but it is in fact rare. You have more of a chance dying in a car crash or being run over crossing the street. Cannot eliminate shark related deaths because they are in their natural habitat. People know this when they choose to play in the ocean. What is your solution?

TheMalibuArtist is a youtuber who takes drone footage of great whites in southern cali and he says there are most definitely more and more sightings than usual.. it’s mostly juveniles though that swim amongst people all the time and dont attack but every once in a while an adult white comes around and those are the dangerous ones..
@nickmitsialis
@nickmitsialis 2 жыл бұрын
Funny, in the 'North' the large adult white sharks have mostly learned not to bother humans; it's the 'teenagers'(8-12 feet) that are 'transitioning' from fish/rays/small sharks to marine mammals that will prove to be a problem until THEY learn to tell what a human is. I'm not sure if the Morro Bay/SLO coast white shark population is spreading down from the North or moving up from the South.

Orcas are wasteful eaters; they spend hours trying to kill a grey whale calf, then afterwards just eat the tongue and leave the rest. Scientists were surprised when they used orca hunting calls as a 'repellent' to white sharks, suddenly saw the sharks become very excited and aggressive--no doubt, upon hearing the orca cry, the sharks were expecting a 'windfall' of whale blubber.

Yes, I grew up in Morro Bay and there was never a shark attack while I lived there. My older brother has been surfing that spot for over 30 years and has been bumped a few times, but never attacked. I think it's the type of shark, great whites I believe are more aggressive. The sharks that hang out near the rock are mainly nurse sharks. It's just recently that big whites have been spotted there.

Just like humans with a personal space we don't want violated, sharks have some kind of electromagnetic sensor that picks up intruders in their space. This young man was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Perhaps a shark researcher is reading this and can comment.

Without having any sort of info RE: the victim's injuries or feedback from experts like Ralph Collier, we can't really be sure why the Shark did what it did. I'm convinced some white sharks like to 'practice their technique': there was a guy who got bitten a few years back at Pebble Beach, near Carmel. He was diving for lobsters/spearfishing. He saw the shark several times while underwater, but every time it got spotted, it would move away beyond visible range. When he surfaced to get back into his Zodiac inflatable, the shark moved in and bit him then. It was almost like it was 'biding it's time' before moving to make a bite. Some divers/experts say white sharks like to not approach you with 'bad intent' when you can see them.

Probably a mistaken identity predation attempt. Need to understand the extent of the persons injuries to determine. Massive injury would indicate predatory intent vs terratorial or test bite.

@@markmailander3880 That's exactly what I'm waiting for==the report from Ralph Collier or someone of his background would probably explain everything.

Shark are attacks are rare but they ain't rare enough! Seems to me despite the hundreds of millions of sharks killed for their fins they are rapidly thriving. So I don't care what anyone has to say about rare shark attacks. What they don't tell you is they are always most likely fatal.

Some sharks are becoming extinct. Oceanic black tip shark for one. Great whites shark are also hunted for their fins. Even the whale shark is hunted for their fins. You have no idea the Chinese people want for shark fins. In Asia the sharks fins are dried on top of building. The amounts of sharks killed for their fins is unbelievable Mexicans kill sharks for their fins to sell to China. In 20 years there might be any sharks alive in the oceans.

That's cool that the person got to pass away doing what they loved. And it is very rare to have a shark attack be fatal. So who knows maybe they are lucky in a cool way.
