I recently built this Sand Scorcher and had a quick blast around on the beach. This was a bit of an experimental video, learning what kind of shots might look good.

This video is epic and you made the Scorcher shine! This iconic Tamiya Baja bug is what got me hooked on the RC hobby, for it was my first kit built RC as a kid in 1979 and I just recently got to relive the love for it with a re release gifted to me by an amazing man known as the RC Elf! 🙏🏼🙌🏼

I had an original Sand Scorcher when they were first released, so building this new one was a great bit of nostalgia for me!

Racing these buggies starting in the the early 80's with my son and daughter was big fun. We raced R/C buggies up until about 2002.

The video looks great! Much better than the original promo videos for these cars. I used to work in a hobby shop and I remember when these cars first came out, (Sand Scorcher, Buggy Champ and Toyota Hi-Lux 4x4) we couldn't restock them fast enough. My favorite moment from back then was the day I sold four complete kits to this one customer (car, 2-channel radio, battery and charger) for his brother and their sons. He also bought the Toyota Hi-lux 4x4 (4-channel radio, battery). it was almost a $5,000 dollar sale, "and in cash", not that we got any sales commission, but it was some vindication for me. My boss thought I was wasting too much time talking to the guy about the cars for the past month. Six months later he came back and bought two complete kits of the Tamiya RC tanks. My boss never gave me any trouble again for spending time with a customer.

I was re-living my childhood with this Sand Scorcher. When we were growing up, my brother also had a Super Champ and the Toyota Hilux with the 3 speed gearbox. They were all fabulous cars!

Oh cool! You got a Sand Scorcher So being an old hippy from California in the 70s. I had two bugs and a bus at various times. When I discovered this model I was amazed at the front suspension in the kit being about dead on to real thing. Ironicly Kyosho makes a very close to scale rear swingarm assembly that is in their baja bug and a number of their buggys. I am a fan of RCkicks.

Lol! Imagine by surprise when I realise the sand scorcher is a terra firma vehicle instead of some new John design! You know, the one you been holding out on building that cruises the dunes at mach .7 just 8" off the deck halfway down the beach only to then go vertical almost out of sight! Then it repeats a mirrored reverse track back and both across the dunes setting the dune grass on fire each high speed, almost kissing the deck! Can you imagine my surprise! Lolol Well one can hope, lolol Thanks John for sharing the awesome angles and camera work featuring your latest need for speed!

I didn't realise Caroline was so short. She does well to run along side the car and keep the camera steady. She must have been knackered. Or did you buy Caroline a gimble for her birthday ? Who says romance is dead😃. Another great video . Thanks J & C.

i had a sand scorcher as a kid, and i recently bought a cheap buggy but a modern one, its still only a brushed motor , but it a 550 (compared to the scorchers 540) with a lipo and its only 1/12th, so is SO much faster than the scorcher -(though still laughably slow compared to the full on brushless buggies of today) , pluss the dampers actually work !

@@SlopeRCGliders I’m guessing you don’t have the old wiper style speed control in this one and the shocks you spent so much time filling and it all leaked out 🙂

takes me back to the late 70's, the Tamaya Baja Bug was a classic, I had one and a F150 too, why do they seem like they'd still be more fun and somehow more authentic than modern arguably better toys, but they just are.

@@SlopeRCGliders Sand scorcher was released late 70's hornet was mid 80's , i had a sanc scorcher , a couple of years later a friend got a hornet, the scorcher handled better , and could keep up, but my battery didnt last as long, the sorcerer was about twice the weight as the hornet ! - the hornet solved the problem of the leaky shocks by not putting any oil in to start with :-)

I do hope you replaced that divot at 2:07 :-) That was very composed over the rough stuff and coped with the soft sand well. I just hope you gave it a really good wash down afterwards. All that salty sand will corrode metal parts in a heart beat
