Surfing St Clair Beach Dunedin at Sunset

Fri 6 May 2016. Footage of surfing taken from a vantage point on the hill overlooking the surf. Surf was not incredibly good, but was above average. Water is fairly cold this time of year so thick suits and hoods + gloves essential.
Filmed on my new camcorder, the incredible Canon Vixia. *Footage can be a bit fuzzy at times because most of it was filmed at very low light as the sun was setting.

One must say you are pretty blessed of living there. I grew up in Chile, on the coast. Surfing, fishing, mountainbike riding, skating, etc. Of what I have heard about many people is that both countries are similar. My wife is from Bavaria so we are here xD. Nice mix of videos you have!

Coldest place I've ever surfed- the water felt carbonated. What year did the pier get taken down?

Do you mean the poles in the sand at St Claire beach? They have been progressively eroded by the surf with only a few left now. They were put there a long time ago to help stop sand movement down the beach. But the natural flow of the beach has been changed about 10 years ago when they built up the south end of the beach, and the poles have been eroding since.

@@PaulGarbettNZ Thank for replying. Lovely video! There was a long pier between St Clair and St. Kilda last time I was there in 2008 and 2010. Greetings from San Francisco!

There was the "poo-pipeline" pier that was only up for about a year. It was there to make a sewage pipeline out into the sea, and it produced great tubing surf for a while. I wish they left it there!
