If you are unsure whether a type 2 Surge protection device needs to be installed, there is a calculation that can assist. This method is from the SANS 10142-1:2020 wiring standard - The Wiring of Premises Part1: low voltage installations.

Very informative, but one question! If one determined, from the method you described, that eg. a T2 5kA SPD is required, would that determine the Inominal or Imax as printed on the SPD?
