The worst part is: Everyone was professionally right to do what they did, and at the same time wrong. Shawn couldn't control himself and it cost him his job, Dr. Han is unable to control his personnel (which includes Shawn) and it cost him his job. Dr. Andrews fired Dr. Han because of Dr. Han's perception of Shawn and his inability to work with Shawn and his limitations. If it was a problem to begin with, the hospital would have never hired Shawn.

I do agree that Shawn can be incredibly annoying and is pampered/coddled sometimes. But I have to say, the writers did a decent job of making Dr Han an antagonist in this storyline (I think villain might be too strong a word). He missed his own welcome brunch, making him appear arrogant. He barged into a non-urgent surgery he wasn’t needed at to assert dominance, and then proceeds to drill and humiliate resident doctors by putting them on the spot and asking questions during a freaking surgery because he has some “high standard”. He plays music distracting the autistic surgeon he wants to get rid of so badly. Three of his doctors are under review by the medical board for malpractice, but he proceeds to blackmail the board by spying on its members. Did it work? Yes but: He was patient, charming and intelligent, but in the long run, I think he would have done more harm than good. Everyone has hated Shaun at one point or the other, even Claire, but they grew to tolerate and appreciate him as time went on. Dr Han didn’t see the big picture, Shaun is an asset and wasn’t treated as such. You could order coaching from a psychiatrist or something, and either Shaun takes the offer or loses the job. Simple don't you think? Edit: Glassman tried to get Shaun coaching once, but Shaun refused and threw a big tantrum. I just realised that Dr Han forcing Shaun to get coaching might look like repetition to the writing team. They wouldn't want to repeat plot points so that makes sense...

@@l0sts0ul89 but it's a more signifcant issue with those on the spectrum, thus it's considered a special need. Their emotions are often amplified by a fixation trigger. Their impulses and habits are also affected by fixation triggers. Autistic people's fixation triggers are all different, but work in similar ways when active. If you have someone who's trigger focuses on one's wrongdoings or mistakes, frustration builds up at an accelerated rate in comparison to neurotypical people. Meaning the potential for an emotional outburst/meltdown is higher as well, and because of the fixation trigger amplifying what they feel, their brain will send more irrational signals the the body that correspond to whatever emotion they're feeling, making them appear more "animated" with their visual expressions. Imagine an animated expression of frustration and anger coming out of a surgeon that is operating on you and they start getting violent. The likelihood of that happening from an Autistic person vs. a Neurotypical one is higher, and thus feared more by the general public. This series is just propaganda to dissipate that stigma around Autistic doctors.

I don't know why but him saying he couldn't control the staff really bugged me the wrong way. As much as he is a doctor, he needs to realize that everyone has their part. Your job is to lead not boss everyone around. In life we will never have full control of the problem we come to. You may plan a surgery one way but as you are doing it need to change or add on the list that needs to be done. Also, I noticed that a lot of people talking about Shaun bedside manner being bad, but most surgeons/doctors have a team of nurses and etc backing them up. I have met a lot of doctors who have bad bedside manner in just a simple walking/express care/ regular visits. I had one doctor who when I was only ten told me that I was exaggerated my pain and the next week I saw my actual doctor who immediately got me appointment with a specialist.

@LoopyLemon775 "Proved him right" already shows the problem: Han first did, and only as a reaction the problems occurred. Which proves Han wrong: He was discriminating. Shaun, by this point, was very well able to handle the situation. He just had his weak points, but so did everybody else. But instead of helping Shaun deal with his weaknesses (or OFFERING a change in position), he was discriminated against and forced into changing careers. Han manipulated the situation to force Shaun out, he wanted to fire him from the start but couldn't legally yet. So he pushed until he got his way.

I find it odd that not a lot of people can't understand Dr. Shaun's POV and can so easily side with Dr. Han. They're consciously aware that Dr. Shaun is on the spectrum. So, obviously, he's not gonna respond normally, as someone who is not of the spectrum would, to a lot of things. It's their job to accommodate the person they chose to hire without discrimination. And Dr. Han has discriminated Dr. Shaun a lot throughout the series without trying to understand how to communicate and accomodate Dr. Shaun who, once more, is on the spectrum. He's proven himself to be an amazing asset to the team. Wouldn't you wanna do all you could to keep your strongest asset on board by forcing people like Dr. Han to take a class on finding a way to better communicate with Dr. Shaun.

Now I understand your take on the matter, however one thing that could be argued is the notion that it is Dr.Hans job or that it is his responsibility to be accommodating to Dr.Shawn is unfair or unreasonable. His job requires that he makes sure that his staff does their job and have the means to do it but unless we review his job description or his contract then one could argue that the accommodation would be solely out of Dr.hans choice. Now, please don't assume this is my stance. I am just pointing out the assumption that is being made, that's all. I will say, though, that Dr.Hans treatment of Dr.Shawn was, in my eyes, wrong.
@juliejenkins2376
@juliejenkins2376 9 ай бұрын
I have to say, I agree with both of you. However, at the same time, I disagree...to a point. If the hospital itself has taken the stance that they're willing to accommodate a surgeon with special needs (and make no mistake, Shawn has special needs!), then what were doing in hiring Dr Hahn in the first place? At the very least he wasn't well vetted and/or equipped to deal with someone requiring those types of needs. In saying that, if the hospital's stance is that the same rules and conditions apply to Shawn as everyone else, then it's clear Hahn was correct to let him go. We all know that not everyone is equipped to deal with someone with special needs. Was that in Hahn's job description? It's definitely not the type of skill you'd expect to need as a surgeon. A SN patient is one thing, but a SN employee is totally different. It obviously takes special type of person to a accommodate someone like Shawn not to mention the obvious burden it puts on not only his immediate supervisor (Hahn) but it also puts an extra burden on other employees. This may not be a popular opinion, but not everyone is as sweet and accommodating as Claire and Glassman and neither should they have to be. Especially if it's creating extra work or extra burden at work for them and it obviously does! I would hate to work with someone who could lose their sh*t at any moment, even in the middle of a surgical procedure... regardless of how brilliant they are. People like Shawn should not be discriminated against but at the same time, we should not have to pander to their every need either! I'm not saying he shouldn't have been employed there, but I am saying that I believe that the benefits of his brilliant do not always mitigate the risks of his limitations . I agree with their decision to give him a trial period to start with. But I also think that they needed to either allow Hahn to decide who worked for him if thats part of his job description. I also think that in deciding to keep Shawn on, they should have preempted something like this when a new team member came on board, so they wouldn't lose a talented surgeon over a junior surgeon. Which, by the way, I don't believe would happen in real life. Sorry for the novel, but these are my scattered opinions, for what they're worth!😅

"It's their job to accommodate the person they chose to hire without discrimination." Only within a reasonable degree not in every way or form. There are plenty of examples of where the accommodations were far beyond reasonable and people can be fired. If that person who is being accommodated for is still compromising patient care, then they have every right to fire that person. It isn't just about Dr. Shuan or Dr. Han, but also the patient's perspective that matters the most.

Accommodating Shaun IS NOT DR HAN's JOB. Expecting this is entitled nonsense. No one is special or gets special treatment. The patient and the team must come first. Whats next, we hire blind people to become surgeons? Intelligence is 50% of being a good doctor; This was the first thing they taught us in med school. Soft skills like communication and being able to work on a team is what employers are after. You either hire Shaun or Han. You can't keep both. As someone on the spectrum myself… I see both sides of the argument. I once almost got fired because I said something that seemed racist even though I was thinking about something entirely different. The only reason I didn’t was by that point I was working there half a year and they knew I was anything but racist. This is something I’ve learned to better handle but not all on the spectrum have the ability to filter their thoughts. To those saying that he shouldn’t interact with the patients then let me ask.. as a patient we are always seen by our surgeon before and after surgery cause we want to know who we are entrusting our lives to… so would you feel comfortable not meeting your surgeon? No matter how awkward they are? To those saying it’s not in dr Hans job description to be able to accommodate for those with needs, that’s where your wrong, superiors need to understand their team in order to function properly. Case in point, let’s say instead of autism Shawn was in a wheel chair? Would the rest of the surgeons just leave him out cause they would need to lower the surgery table lower? I ask this hypothetically, but the accommodation for those with physical and mental disabilities should be applied as equally as possible. Please note I’m an artist not a doctor so this is just a perspective I was wondering if people saw.

@Frenzyshark
@Frenzyshark 7 ай бұрын
But wouldn't there potentially be other issues involved besides lowering the table? Since Shawn in this hypothetical scenario would be confined to a wheelchair, what if he had difficulty reaching over to a certain part of the patient's body from where he was? Would you expect him to wheel around the table to get to that part? Or any other issues that could potentially affect his ability operate where he needs to. While I suppose the other staff would have to work harder to accommodate him, it could easily snowball into a bigger problem. Patients can and will sue the hospital because "the surgeon was not only emotionally compromised but physically compromised". They'll ask why was he put in the OR in that situation to begin with? Just something to think about.
@eadanime1741
@eadanime1741 7 ай бұрын
@@Frenzyshark I see you point but often times surgeons have assistants even when fully able to move to do things to assist. I dont see how just asking for assistance more and moving when needed would lead to a bigger problem? As for the patients sueing, yes that is true, but that would be discrimination wouldnt it? and cause of laws to protect others from that the patient suing is less likely to win. after all like shawn hypothetically the answer would be, "because they are good at what they do" I appreciate your opinion and thought experiment though :)

He is a liability all feelings aside. It would be like having somebody with severe anxiety on a bomb squad diffusing. Shawn has great talents and could be of much use in the OR. It is important we use people’s strengths, he can be given a special position and hann is right. Staff needs to be controlled. We’re not talking some McDonald’s worker. We are talking life or death. If Shawn killed a patient that hospital should be sued for every penny. It would be premeditated murder. They knew he was a liability and continued anyway it’s not like another surgeon who just happened to make a Mistake that yes is bad but not known.

I am Autistic (classified as mid-functioning, with high capability but notable emotional disturbance and disconnect), and this show angers me. Shaun isn't as simple as 'a surgeon with autism', he's a medicinal savant with extreme behavior and discipline issues. Dr. Han was absolutely in the right, because Shaun has no place being in a position where others' lives rely on him. He's self-indulgent, ignorant, impulsive, apathetic, and unreliable. I find myself falling into similar situations, except nobody has to worry about me walking out on them mid-surgery because I'm not putting myself in the position. Shaun doesn't deserve to be a surgeon, he doesn't deserve to keep his job, and he _especially_ doesn't deserve to keep it at the removal of Dr. Han. Shaun deserves patience, a smaller set of responsibilities, and mandatory behavior coaching sure, but that doesn't mean he can just get his old job back because a superior took pity on him for being autistic. I know Glassman tried professional coaching, and Shaun threw a tantrum, which is exactly the point of him not deserving to be a surgeon. Dr. Han explicitly pointed out that he tried to fire Shaun because he was unstable, unreliable, and impulsive (things you can't be when you're paid to save others' lives regularly), and the response was "He's mot mature enough to get another job, and also we'll miss him :(", as if that's remotely justifiable with stakes as high as the lives of uninvolved innocent patients.

Have you actually watched the show to determine that Shaun never killed a patient with his outburst?
@breannamcgonigal5048
@breannamcgonigal5048 14 күн бұрын
I'm also on the spectrum but I'm a very mild case and I fully agree with you. This show is a nice one to watch if your not here for realism, but no hospital would ever hire Shaun irl because he is a walking courtroom with how many lawsuits he would cause. I would never trust someone this obviously on the spectrum to be my surgeon, because you can't trust even a well adjusted autistic that far on the spectrum not to have a outburst if they are in a high stress environment, It just has way to much risk for them to hurt others or themselves. I like I said am a very mild case with all verbal communication fine but emotionally I'm hit-or-miss, with a spotty understanding of how to react to other people's emotions and a tendency to spiral into a emotional nosedive of whatever I'm feeling. A example is once my mom dropped a lit cigarette on the floor partway under her bed, and my first reaction was "fire! Need to pour water on it!" It hadn't did anything yet but I was a screaming, crying, panicking mess after my mom wouldn't let me pour water on it because of our weak flooring. I then proceeded to physically hurt myself throwing myself under the metal bedframe trying to grab it so it "wouldn't burn the house down" despite the fact it had gone out by this point. Someone who has Shaun's levels of communication and emotional difficulties is a very big risk in ANY mildly stressing job, let alone one where he is elbows deep in a person's insides sometimes multiple times a day.

while i do think han is an asshole i gotta say there is a limit on how much accommodation is legally required if you hire someone. hes not firing sean hes putting him in a different dept heck as far as im aware its a lateral move not a demotion so hes not even firing him. seans major issue is that he wanted to be a surgeon and nothing else heck if they promoted him to the board at any point sean would still have the same issue. han is the equivalent of any new boss coming in and shaking the place up. when people have worked in a certain way for a while they get into routines creating a groove in the sofa so to speak. the issue is people can become complacent in actual procedures because its the way we've always done it. the issue between a good new boss and a bad new boss is how much you are willing to compromise. han was a hardliner but he came up with a compromise as he did recognise seans talent. sean didnt accept it and they fired han and went looking for someone who fit in the groove better therefore nullifying the reason for hiring him in the first place
