Surgeon general calls for warnings on social media platforms

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called for tobacco-style warning labels on social media platforms, saying that excessive use of the sites can harm children's mental health. NBC News' Tom Costello reports.

It’s not just young people. I’m middle aged and had to quit it like I quit smoking. I now have a visceral reaction to the thought of going back and my mental health and self esteem have improved significantly.

@@mytoesarecold5555 As a boomer the internet is a big endless library and personal instructions of life . I have seniors spend 10 to 15 hours watching TV or the internet . It’s media that is social for most anyone .

Here's the deal, they already created parental controls for Apple and Android that can limit what can be seen and for how long. Parents just need to use it.

Good luck. That would involve parents you know...parenting. Speaking of which. Teach that kid how to talk without saying "like" every few words. The valley girl trend has been over for "like" some time now.

It is a worldwide problem. I recently had guests a Mom and her 8 year old kid. I picked them up from the airport. From the time we left the airport to the moment they left seven days later the kid was on some online shooting game. I was totally shocked. I had been looking forward to getting to know my friend’s kid. When I suggested doing a bike tour of the city, I discovered the kid had never been on a bike. He agreed to try to learn, but broke down crying after 20 minutes because he couldn’t instantly ride. This is not normal people! We are losing childhoods, losing communication skills and normal interaction. Parents are raising narcissists with instant gratification demands. It is going to be scary for the old generation who remembers when we spoke to each other face to face and on not through text, when we went outdoors and enjoyed sports and walking, and when we cared about others and the community and not just ourselves!

I use social media for work to network. It's great way to communicate and share information. Young minds are not mature enough to handle social media. The video game usage needs to be addressed to. Congress, parents, schools should work together. Phones should be banned in class.
