We hope that by sharing this new disease diagnosis that it'll help someone else out there experiencing the same issues. Eosinophilic esophagitis (e-o-sin-o-FILL-ik uh-sof-uh-JIE-tis) is a chronic immune system disease. With this disease, a type of white blood cell, called an eosinophil, builds up in the lining of the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. This tube is also called the esophagus. This buildup, which is a reaction to foods, allergens or acid reflux, can inflame or injure the esophageal tissue. Damaged esophageal tissue can lead to difficulty swallowing or cause food to get stuck when you swallow.
Eosinophilic esophagitis has been identified only since the early '90s, but is now considered a major cause of digestive system illness. Research is ongoing and will likely lead to revisions in the diagnosis and treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis.

Thank you for sharing. My poor husband has been struggling with getting food “stuck” in his throat for over 15 years! When you first shared Jared’s EOE diagnosis I immediately thought I bet that’s it. He has an appointment with his doctor next week to discuss it! We never had heard of EOE. My dad has been struggling with swallowing his whole life and getting food stuck in his throat like rice and has had his esophagus stretched multiple times. They think it might be EoE now. Hope your husband’s appt went well!

My husband does not have EOS, but he was very sick for a long time. After years of terrible health he was diagnosed with celiac. It was a huge relief to find out what the source of his illness was, and with diet changes his health improved drastically.

What a great analogy! I'd rather be trying to find my way through a lit maze than a dark one. I have struggled my whole life with depression and a lot of health issues and it really does help to know the answers to questions than to be left with questions and despair. I have two grown sons with terminal brain cancer and one of them has a wife who also has cancer now. They have young children so there is a lot of stress and worry and yet we all go on living life day by day trying to do the best we can with what we've been given. No matter what I have faith that we will all be together in Heaven someday.

Thankful for your diagnoses, it helps to know. I love that a nurse in your initial ER visit happened, mentioned this EOE diagnoses, good old nurses! Not sure if you all saw it. She had mentioned how often chicken seemed to be a food that patients tended to asphyxiate on. Again, thankful for the diagnosis. 👩🏽‍⚕️ Nurses rock❤

Jared, have the barium swallow test done! My ENT found that my cervical hardware from a previous surgery had punctured my esophagus causing a bacterial infection. He saved my life because it could have caused my body to become septic! Had major reconstruction surgery to correct this but doing great now. Glad the prayers were answered! Praying for ya'll.

Seems like you feel comfortable with your surgeon. It is so important to have a team of doctors you trust. Once they all start working together with you (and you always take your list of questions), I'm sure that you'll just a have a slight change in your old normal. We don't understand why things happen, but God is with us every step of the way. I agree with you, Jared, my faith increased after several illnesses, with one leaving me disabled. Continued prayers for your healing.

My ❤ goes out to u n brit in 2012 I had open heart surgery to remove blood clots from my lungs, I just found out that I have a stomach disease where my food doesn't break up in my gut so they I have GERD but I don't think so I going o let them know about what u have see if is the same thing or not. I also have diabetes and knee issues . In 2011 I had a stroke at age 35 been through the hunger too. All the test you are test u are talking about been there done that still going through it Good lord will get u through as he has me I pray for you and Brittany and finn every day all the way from Colorado Springs ❤ you all Get well soon jared

Jared, I always knew that you are high maintenance. All kidding aside, you got this. I pray for you and Britt daily. I think of you as friends. I suffered from severe acid reflux. I had a procedure That helps the acid stay in the stomach where it belongs. That was 25 years ago. Bless you and hang in there.

It reminds me a lot of what a friend had years ago, throat dysphonia and I remember him having to get botox shots in his throat and he had a dilation as well. I pray that you will get to the bottom of your EOE and you'll be able to live a normal life without worrying about food getting stuck. Prayers of healing.

Praying for you! I deal with multiple health issues as well. Many the doctors have not been able to assist me with, so I am in the proverbial "dark maze." One of the things I have is I have never been able to swallow pills without a lot of pain more times than not. Sometimes, I can feel them go down all the way in immense pain. Other times, it takes several tries to swallow them. Tablets have sharp edges, so those hurt the most. Capsules get stuck on the way down which has always been painful. Gel caps I've had mixed experiences with depending on the size. Anyway, I've also become breathless sometimes depending what I eat, and sore throats with other things I eat. I can feel the swell. So, I understand what Jared is going through. I also have undiagnosed celiac (No doctor wanted to help me with that, so I took care of it myself.). I am intolerant to animal products, allergic to peanuts, no grains whatsoever (includes rice, corn, oats, etc.), soy causes hormonal imbalance, have eczema (diagnosed) (I'm severely allergic to all skin care, health care, and cleaning products - self diagnosed), tree nuts are severely limited, minimal oil (only avocado right now), and in addition to all of it, I am trying a low histamine diet due to some new symptoms that I kept nodding off uncontrollably (yes, literally falling asleep at work and anywhere with awful fatigue all the time). Any time I ate, I'd want to or would fall asleep immediately. I couldn't control it. The need for sleep occupied my thoughts incessantly if I couldn't due to not being at home or needing to go somewhere. In addition, I'm bloated all the time, have IBS, and just pain in my gut for no apparent reason most of the time. Every mistake I make with my diet (cross contamination or a hidden ingredient) causes horrible repercussions that last for months. Anyway, the key is to never give up and continue to fight. We were never guaranteed an easy life, so we need to make the best of it. And thank God for the good days as well as for being alive on the bad days. Every day is a blessing, and life is a gift. I do have to say that all of this has taught me how wonderful and beautiful fruits and vegetables are. I can grow my meals right in my backyard, and I do love that.

You guys are such a sweet couple. I’m so glad that your hubby made it through this okay. Having a tear would be very scary. My family deals with severe autoimmune diseases too. My son who’s now 17 has it the hardest with two, one being especially serious. He has Celiac and Type 1 Diabetes (the auto immune type where his immune system destroyed the cells that make insulin). He gets 4 shots a day on average and his finger pricked for blood glucose level checks about 6 times on average. In total 3 of my 4 children have celiac and other milder autoimmune issues that hopefully stay milder. Autoimmune diseases are tough. May God continue to bless you both!

My daughter is helping a lady who is on a soft food diet. Pioneer Woman's potato soup was a huge hit. It is packed full of flavor, and can all be blended for easy eating. We skipped the bacon since she really struggles to swallow.

You know continue to baby until you feel 100% sure you know it’s better be safe than sorry another thing is I don’t know if you’re gonna mention it in this video as I’m watching, but is a very common thing that has happened to others that is had this kind of scope done or are these things like by accident cause I know they don’t mean to do it on purpose nobody would. First off - Bless you both for all the struggles you go through keeping a positive outlook and staying strong together is wonderful. My brother-in-law went through the exact same thing and eventually ended up in emergency to have a piece of chicken that was stuck removed - he eventually found out it is GLUTEN that causes his esophagus to narrow so even though he is not celiac he has a sensitivity that is severe enough but wasn’t identified as an allergy. I hope you find your answers soon - praying for you both.

Hope you have a speedy recovery!! My husband has had the issue with choking on food since he was in his teens! He turns 50 this year! Mostly meat! Thanks for sharing. Jared You are in my prayers. I have just been thinking wow. I have trouble swallowing have had for over a year have had my esophagus stretched but that didn’t last. I choke easily and it scares me when I can’t swallow because I can’t breathe and dr’s just don’t act like it’s a big deal. So now I am armed with information Thank you I will be talking to my Dr now about that possibility. So glad you have a light at the pathway thru. I have had the swallow test and it showed a stricture in my esophagus. So definitely have that so you will know. Also Universities have something called Swallow Studies so see if you can get involved in that. It is something I believe your Gastroenterologist will be able to help you with that. I have had to be intubated a couple times to have food removed. This has been going on for me for 10 yrs so and no one ever told me it could be a food allergy. So thank you for mentioning it so I will look into that for myself.

Recommendation- record audio at doctors visits where you have lots of questions and important information being relayed. I always found helpful to go back and listen directly vs relying on memory/notes. I’d bet now you could find a secure app that would also transcribe it. I just used general default phone voice memo recording thing.

I have acid reflux and struggle to swallow anything big or dry. Suspect it's GERD. On a PPI medication, which helps. Never heard of EOE before you guys mentioned it. Hope you get and feel completely better soon.
