A bypass graft is a surgical intervention to reroute blood flow around an area of blockage like in severe coronary artery disease, called CABG surgery, and severe peripheral artery disease. Bypass grafts for peripheral artery disease are named based on where the bypass starts, or the proximal anastomosis, and ends aka the distal anastomosis. A femoropopliteal bypass is a bypass graft that is anastomosed from the femoral artery to the popliteal artery. Aortobifemoral bypass is from the aorta to both femoral arteries.
In this video episode, medical student Aisha Moustapha from the University of Saskatchewan will:
1. Review the basic principles of vascular bypass grafts
2. Review the surgical terms used
3. Help you understand the potential complications of bypass grafts
4. Help understand the basic steps of various bypass grafts
