In this video, I explained Surging and choking of centrifugal compressor. i explained above theory by using graph of pressure ratio VS mass flow rate for centrifugal compressor.
It is the phenomenon which is caused due to unsteady, periodic and reversal of flow through the compressor when compressor has to operate at less mass flow rate than a predetermined value (a value corresponding to maximum pressure ratio).

when you refer to point B as the max efficiency, i am not sure in term of what? I think when you are operating at point B, your discharge pressure is high, therefore you put more work on the motor and less mass flow rate...please clarify...also can you explain the IGV (inlet guide vane) how does that play a role in your discharge pressure and flow rate?

In the industry actually most efficient operating point is closer to E since most processes need constant pressure application. Remember this is a theorical review of a centrifugal compressor curve just to demonstrate its critical points, i think we can assume inlet valve is wide open and no valve control is applied, again just for demonstration purposes since controllers avoid choke and surge by adjusting both inlet and discharge valve.

Thanks for this useful video. I have questions. Surge happens the gas flow first becomes steady and then reverses right? But choke happens gas flow increases excessively and what happens in this situation?

Flow speed in some point of the compressor reaches value of Mach 1. For speed to go above this value, which corresponds to an increase in mass flow rate, you would need a convergent-divergent section, such as the ones found in steam turbines (which are in fact used to accelerate the flow above Mach 1). Since a compressor is not designed for such purpose, and the section is simply divergent, this means that when M=1 is reached there is no further increase of mass flow rate. Mass flow rate = density * Area of section * velocity.
