Subtle changes in move order can have huge effects. I like that in this version of the Wing Gambit, Black does not have the option of returning the pawn with ...b4-b3 to keep the a-file closed. And, as Igor emphasized, it's quite amazing how many natural moves do not work for Black.

I am often critical of these "crush your opponent with this opening" videos, as it usually ignores some rather obvious and perhaps common ways to avoid the worst outcomes, but I can truly see opponents making all the same mistakes in this one. It is definitely a variation I will be trying out in practice.

I believe g6 is objecticely the best reply. It prevents b4, so you can just play an accelerated dragon where white wasted a move

I love the mengarini variation and the theory that goes with it. But it's all completely pointless because after 1. e4 c5 2. a3, Black never ever plays 2... Nc6. It's like Black doesn't even understand the basics of the opening they chose to play. (I'm around 1200.)

Tried this gambit in my first otb tournament yesterday. Result: 0 out of three. I was lucky to win all my black games with the trusted boring French opening. So I ended up at least scoring 3 out of 6 after losing all my white games against the Sicilian. My opponents just did not play the nice moves shown here. And I am not the tactic genius to find my way through this complicated opening once I am on my own. Never got the knight to b5, never got the pawn back, never got any tactical compensation, in one case against a 2050 player I even lost control over the center after having that huge bulwark there. My conclusion: this opening is just for tactical geniuses. Nothing for me. Just brings my rating down.
