Little fun fact about a team of Dutch Marines, they broke the world record speed March, last year October 2020, which was than in hands of GBR with a time of 4.16.48 hours. The Dutchies did it with a full United (21 man) a PT uniform and 40 pounds packing, in a time of 3.58.55. 18 minutes under the old record. They where aloud to switch between running And marching. Which they didt, they switched on and off 59 min. Running, 1 min marching. And so on. Speed mars was a marathon length. The Dutchies trained 1 year straight 6-8 times a week. GBR trained 5 years. To come with there time, which stood for 3 years.

The original Marine Corps. The one from 16xx, was used to destroy the Chain blocking the Medway river at Chatham. Dutch sunk several ships and took the Flagship of the British to the Netherlands. They they still destroyed it as it was not build for Dutch shallow waters. There is even a roumor (not know if true) that the people of Chatham did not want the Dutch to leave. This because the British Army took the food. And the Dutch payed for the food.

We hoped to stay neutral like the First World War, we didn’t want to meddle in all that stuff, and while we were occupied we had a big and fairly productive resistance. We even have a sort of theme park “Madurodam” which is basicly a park filled with miniatures that is named after a resistance fighter George Maduro.

Nearby there is a landing strip in the middle of a forest (not in use anymore). Which was used for mostly British airplanes to provide the Dutch resistance on the ground with new supplies. When the Germans learned about this little airfield they bombed it, but if you would walk trough the area in that forest you will see bomb holes everywhere but not on the strip which is kind of funny.

This is just laughable. Not your comment, but what the guy is telling. The Netherlands tried to remain neutral, but after the early morning of May 10, 1940, the Netherlands was fully at war with Germany. Germany invaded the Netherlands without a declaration of war. Due to budget cuts, the Dutch army was in a poor condition and unable to withstand the well-trained and equipped German army. After 4 days of fighting, the Germans failed to take Rotterdam. Fiercely defended by the "Black Devils" the Marines. To break the resistance, the German Luftwaffe bombed Rotterdam with the threat of flattening other Dutch cities. Then the army was forced to surrender. But through the 4 days of fighting, the German army and especially the Luftwaffe had been so weakened, they lost many transport planes, actually never recovered, much to Hitler's anger. Read the book The Battle of the Residence.

About the neutrality stuff: We declared ourselves neutral in the 1st world war, built up a massive army and managed to convince Germany, France and England (mostly Germany) that we were too much trouble. By the time the 2nd world war came around we declared ourselves neutral again, but we forgot about the massive army thing. Our army had only 9 divisions and was severely lacking in support (like artillery). The Germans threw 22 of the most modern modern and fully supported divisions at the Netherlands and Belgium. So, we wanted to remain neutral, but that didn't work out. We did put up a valiant defense. The Dutch army was technically not defeated, it was ordered to stand down after the bombing of Rotterdam and the German promise to do Amsterdam next, and then another city every day we didn't capitulate. The Dutch Korps Mariniers was facing the German Fällschirmjäger at Rotterdam. It was the Dutch marines vs the German airborne, fighting over the bridges near Rotterdam. And the Marines held, so the Germans changed their tactics to bombing.

The marines that fought at Rotterdam also know as the black devils. to my opinion the dutch politicians made the biggest mistake after ww2 in the dutch indo war. Where they dismantled the knil and how they treated the dutch indo folks who came to Europe. Till this day the dutch politicians who are and where in control are spineless and weak when it comes to decision making like the how the defended the military and how they ignored and forgot aboute the dutch Indonesians. The most darkest page of dutch historie.

Actually, really the basis for the 'Korps Mariniers' lies in the 80 years war of independence against Spain (1568 - 1648) where the shipborne Dutch forces (De Geuzen of Watergeuzen) )generally performed ship-to-ship fighting but then also performed organized land-battle once the fight at sea was done. One of the basic weapons they used was the hand-lobbed explosive fragmentation charge that is currently known as the handgrenade. One of the first instances where such a device was used in an integral manner throughout its forces.

Sort of Marines was formed for entering other ships yes. But they where disbanded again after the 80 Years War was over. Funny fact about 80 Years War, we did a Troje action. A group of soldiers hid in bottom of a ship bringing Turf to Castle of Breda. At night they came out of the ship to open the gates from the inside so the rest of the army could get in. Adriaen van Bergen brought already so many times, Turf to the Castle, so the Spaniards not checked his ship anymore. So he made contact with Maurits van Nassau. Possible this felt together with Carnaval, so lots of Spaniards where not at castle self or where drunk.

the Dutch marines is not the oldest marine corps, i think that goes to Portugal. but the Dutch marines are the first marines in the modern sense of the word. Portuguese and later marines of other countries, were troops specializing in ship to ship combat. the Dutch marine were the first to be extensively trained to do amphibious landings, as well as capture and hold locations with limited numbers of troops. during the raid on the Medway that the video talks about, The Dutch, under nominal command of Willem Joseph van Ghent and Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, over several days bombarded and captured the town of Sheerness, sailed up the Thames estuary to Gravesend, then sailed into the River Medway to Chatham and Gillingham, where they engaged fortifications with cannon fire, burned or captured three capital ships and ten more ships of the line, and captured and towed away the flagship of the English fleet, HMS Royal Charles. the reason why The Netherlands was Neutral during world war 2, was because it had declared itself neutral. just like it did in world war 1, this only changed when Germany invaded. and after it did, the military mounted a desperate but futile defense. Germany invaded in may 10 1940, and by may 15 1940 The Netherlands officially surrendered. thus coming under German occupation.

We battled with the English, than the English got tired of their King... who's daughter got married to Dutch Royalty and than the English asked her as an heir to take over the country and thrown with her husband. So technically the Netherlands is the ONLY country that England as a country allowed it to invade and take over. Maybe because they knew we were powerful enough to make it so and because the coincidence was that the heir was married to the Orange royal family. This gave William of Orange the names William II of England and King Billy in Ireland, where they still celebrate the victory of the Battle of the Boyne. Which caused the whole Catholic and Protestant split in Ireland and Northern Ireland and is still a problem up untill this day including the fact that Brexit was held up because of that said border and the rules and regulations regarding trade across the border and passage accross the border. This since Europe has/had free roaming of citizens within the EU borders via the Shengen treaty. So William II of England and Queen Mary II of England ruled over England for a period of time. In England's history this period is called the Glorious Revolution. Which resulted in a Bill of Rights (constitution) that was very similar to the Dutch consitution as was signed ~100 years earlier. Now roughly ~100 years later the USA got their constitution which was based upon the English constitution and is thus a direct descendent of the Dutch constitution ~200 years earlier. So I don't think it's weird to say that the Dutch are the foundation of the world as we know it today. The way of executing liberties, freedom of religion, freedom of trade, stockmarket system, even the 2nd amendment (which is something we lost after WW1 by the way), democracy and all that stuff that you think is "typical American"... most likely it'll have strong Dutch roots.

As for the earlier history pieces, I think that difference between wars, and then allied has to do with the royal families. First of course comes the wars because the houses are separated and separated states. And when they're allied I believe that's by the time that Willem of Orange assisted rebels in the taking of the UK or something, and then they saw Willem as an ally. I'm not a history scolar so please do factcheck and correct me if I'm wrong.

The Germans hoped to run over the Netherlands in short time but......they met fears resistance at the Afsluitdijk, Rhenen(Grebbenlinie) and the Rotterdam Maas bruggen as mentioned above. At these places the Germans suffered dearly. The Dutch Marines of Rotterdam could successfully keep the Germans from crossing the bridges over the river Maas. Many German soldiers where send on the bridges where they had little cover and got shot one by one buy these marines who sat in full cover. The Germans got sick of it and they threatened to bomb the city. Shortly before(15 min) the German bomber planes arrived the Dutch gave up because risking thousands of lives was not an option. The German general gave order that the planes would turn away. The German genaral Rudolf Schmidt had not received message that in Germany planes for Rotterdam were started. So he did not order actions. The plan was that in case of aborting the bombing that would be communicated by shooting up red flairs. There were two squadrons in the air. One from the south and one from the east.....out of Germany. The wave coming from the south saw the red flairs and turned away. The other squadron had seen no flairs and flew right to the heart of the city. My father was a kid aged twelve. He was on the other side of the river Maas and standing on the rooftops of a milk factory (Galak) he saw the bombing. 80.000 people lost there homes and 900 died. When you walk trough the inner city the scars of the bombing are still to see. You only must know were to look.

That bit about neutrality is complete gibberish. The Netherlands was neutral but was invaded anyway by Germany as were Belgium and Luzembourg (the second time for both of them). After you're invaded you're no longer neutral, we fought back and pretty well until they bombed Rotterdam and threatened more bombings. The Dutch gov't and queen fled to England and most of the navy went with them and joined the British navy (under the Dutch flag but British command). When the Japanese attacked the East Indies the Dutch troops and Navy there fought back too. The Dutch navy sank a ship a day for the first 100 days after Pearl Harbour. Some navy ships escaped to Australia after the disastrous battle of the Java Sea which was led by Ducht rear-admiral Karel Doorman. After that there all that was left in Dutch hands was Suriname and the Caribbean islands. Aruba was important for the US for the oil refineris and Suriname for the bauxite, from which they make aluminium. So no, the Netherlands were not neutral during WW2 although they had planned to be.

The whole neutrality bit is misguided. The Dutch had hoped to stay neutral in WW II as they had in WW I. That thought went out of the window of course as soon as the Nazis invaded.

We initially where as WW2 started Sept 1939 by Nazi's invading Poland. UK and connected countries (NZL, Australia, South-Africa, Canada) and France declared few days after, war with Nazi's, as they where allies with Poland. Netherlands here did not picked sides and stayed Neutral like in WW1. Then May 10th 1940 the Nazi's attacked Netherlands and Belgium to have better defences and being able to easier attack France and UK.

You can't compare Dutch Marines to US marines. They are special forces, but I can and will not compare them to other US forces like Navy Seals, because we also have Korps Commandotroepen that are like Navy Seals.

KCT is by far not anything like Navy Seals. Navy Seals and Marines are Navy. KCT is Groundforce. If you wanna compair KCT towards something. Then Delta Force or something equal. Dutch Marines keep close contact to UK Royal Marines and US Marine Corp.

Like the Danes We've been into boatbuilding and fighting on water since roman times. Also the Germans saw us as equal pure Aryan/Germanic stock, there was no disrespect. Many dutch joined the Westland regiment, to then fight in the Viking Division. Helping our German brothers against the communists of Russia. But the winners (we surely didn't win) write the history in their benefit.

As a former Dutch Marines veteran. Females taking the course, sure go girls, prove you're every bit as strong as men. I applaud you, no joke. But when it comes to deployment, no friggin way I'm teaming with a woman, or allow a woman on a team. Reason? Getting caught behind enemy lines isn't fun as a guy (torture and such), imagine what a female gets to endure. Never on my watch you'll be raped for info by a platoon of hatebeards.

The comment about the Netherlands being neutral during WWII is completely FALSE! The Netherlands was neutral during WWI, but fought during WWII. However this fight did not last long, because the Dutch army was massively outnumbered by a superior German army. So after about 8 days of fighting, the Netherlands where then occupied by the Germans. During the remainder of WWII and the occupation there was a log of "resistance" by clandestine groups, but no regular fighting.

And nobody on the hole world knew about it and they successfully safed the people how where capt hosted in that house. The people from the oposit side got killed by our dutch Marines.. Later the Dutch government release the real live video on internet taken by the marines there self whit cameras on there helmets. Thas how proud our ministerie of defense whas of this secret mission.
