Patras is the 3rd largest city in Greece, and located in the Peloponnese. It is a port city and has ferries serving Italy and the Ionian Islands.
Located about 3 hours drive from Athens, it can also be reached by Ktel bus and tours.
If you wish to HIRE A CAR to Explore Greece I suggest you use a comparison site.

Patras was established as a Roman City specifically for access to Italy, and has a long history from this time. It is fairly unique in the Peloponnese as it is a town with no Acropolis as a result.
The Patras Carnival, held in January and February, is the largest in Greece and one of the largest in Europe, and whilst having occurred for 180 years in Patras, Greek Carnival has it routes in a spring Pagan festival celebrating Bacchus, the Roman God of wine.
Perhaps most famously in AD 60 Saint Andrew the Apostle was crucified by the Romans in Patras, and on this site there now stands the largest Church in Greece, St Andrews, with a capacity of some 5000 people.
Patras has as a result some fantastic Roman buildings, including an Odeon and Roman Stadium, as well as a Byzantine castle built on the site of an old Roman Temple and Church.

I am a citizen of Patras and I can confirm that the city of Patras has become much cleaner and friendlier to the environment. The changes started happening very fast and in a year Patras is going to be a completely different city. You should visit it again in a couple of months.

I liked Patras a lot, the vibe, the city, the people, the carnival. It was just the Graffiti which for me was a shame. There is so much to do and see, especially with the Roman 'origins' of the city. I never thought it unfriendly, quite the opposite :) I will try to come back in September, It is only a couple of hours drive and I loved it last time I was there!

Wow another unique video. I love how these highlight less visited areas that nevertheless show how Greece has so many interesting places that would rate as number one in any other country, but here, whatever, just the same old, same old. NOT!!! 🙂 another one to add to the bucket list!

The most informative video I have found so far on Greece. Researched and well spoken. Agree 100% on the graffiti, it is horrid and stupid to destroy your own country. Love to know the best suburbs/region in or out of Patras to live or maybe retire?

Thank you Andrew ! Great Vid mate ! Patra is cool for the carnival also for studying since it's an "easy" city. Though if you prefer a more calm place with infinite green sea, Pictureasque houses and hills, Yachts, Cosmopolitan people, No grafiti, Stylish houses and gardens that can remind Croatia, Venice, Malta even Venezuela or Buenos Aires since the sailors who live there brought the style from wherever they've chosen...... Go to GALAXIDI ! There are several nice places in FOKIDA region my dear friend ! Galaxidi, Parnasos, Itea, Delphi, Panormos Village,Eratini, Vidavi, Tolofona, Efpalio. ~ P.S. ~ I personally wouldn't like to live in Patra. I would like to live in a good part of ATHENS ! The good areas of Athens are : Psychiko, Filothei, Papagou, Holargos, Kifissia, Ekali, Marousi, Halandri, Vrilissia, Melissia, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Kolonaki, Kastri, Dionisos ! ~ P.S. 2 ~ GREECE used to be a real HEAVEN the past decades (60's - 70's - 80's -90's and maybe early 00's) Now with the climate overheating summers seem a bit like hell ! If the situation gets worse as the years go by i think i'm gonna move to Iceland or Sweden, Norway, Finland !

Thank you for the interesting video, full of information about Patras. I am planning to visit Greece next February, from the 18th to 24th. It would be nice to go to Patras during the carnival, but I was wondering which day would be good to visit. I would appreciate if you could give us advise if you have any information.

Obviously this year the Patras Carnival begins 17th Jan with an opening ceremony. As I understand it the main Carnival events will be weekend of the 16th / 17th March, but there will obviously be other events between the 2 dates and the city will be decorated for carnival. I cant tell you more than that I am afraid at this time.

i mean it was founded and named after Patrea who was leader of the Achaeans of Sparta after they were exlied from their homeland by the Dorians and they were looking for a new shelter. It did however become more powerful when the romans did occupy the area and built a new colony there

Yes, grafitti is usually quite horrible to see, although there are some "nice" examples to be found. However, is it really mindless? Sure, there are some people who just spray anything and everything because they don't have the kind of mind that would lead others to engage in more constructive forms of entertainment, however, I do believe that prospects for many young people are very limited in Greece and grafitti is their way of protesting and making a political statement, if you like. So, is there a way to stop it? I don't know if it will ever stop completely, but better education and a realistic opportunity to find (or start) a job with decent prospects might go a long way to addressing the problem. Over to you, politicians . . . (haha).

I agree with the sentiment, especially re. young, but I live in a small seaside tourist town, maybe 1000 permanent residents and every winter the kids graffiti the seafront and every spring their parents have to clean it up for the summer season.... I cannot see why the kids have to harm the town when it is their future, and they know it.
@quirkygreece
@quirkygreece Жыл бұрын
@@GreeceExplored I suspect that's partly the issue. The kids don't want the future they see, hence why so many leave for other countries. Social media lets youngsters know there is another world out there and they want to explore it . . . their parents didn't have such access. Facebook and KZfaq have a lot to answer for, haha
