It's very likely we are going to go through this process in real life with A.I. and robotics, especially when it comes to defining life and what is alive, which I suspect over the long run, robotics with A.I. that have independent thought and can think, change and adapt will likely be given freedoms like humans have. The question is, will they have to fight for those freedoms or will the human race learn from history and give them freedoms, going on history, new movements usually have to fight for change, but fortunately, we don't have to worry about that for many decades.

A near-perfect scifi classic. As someone who has been in I.T. for over 40 years, I can guarantee you don't need to worry about robots becoming emotional any time soon. The real concern isn't the increase in artificial intelligence, it's the decrease in actual intelligence.

In the novel Deckard was not a replicant, but in a scene you get your doubts for a short time which brings up the question 'What if he was a replicant?' While the movie brings up the same question, I find the thought much creepier. In a few days a new Deckard could wake up in his apartment, thinking he had always been living there. He would smoothly take over the life of his predecessor without even knowing it.

Yes, Ridley Scott messed around with the original story some. In the novel, Decker is clearly not a replicant, but he is greatly conflicted about his job retiring the replicants. His love for Rachel is the beginning of a new life for him. Philip J. Dick wrote some great stories, several of which have been made into movies, but for me Blade Runner is the best of them. This one has a lot of food for thought, doesn't it? I saw it in the theater when it was originally released, then read the novel, and have been thinking about both ever since. I enjoyed rewatching it with you. Thanks for sharing it. 🙂 Oh, and given your discussion afterwards, Lucy,, you might enjoy the sequel. More food for thought there.

The replicants are fully adult when they are born, and were never conceived in any natural way. They were never children, didn't grow up or learn anything in a natural way until they are awakened for the first time. Programmed before birth to serve a purpose. Roy was a assault combat model, Priss a "pleasure" unit and Leroy was produced to provide manual labor tasks requiring endurance and strength. They were grown to be slaves but developed awareness of their own existence, and realised that.

Since Lucy was commenting on the dystopian look of the movie; "Blade Runner" takes place in an alternate reality where the inventions of androids and advanced spaceflight technology enabled humankind to flee the overcrowded, war-torn, spent, polluted Earth and settle the virgin "outer worlds." (Hence the blimps constantly advertising for colonists.) However, only humans without genetic damage were allowed to emigrate. This typically meant poorer people were left behind, supposedly due to genetic damage from generations of exposure to radiation, pollution, etc. Wealthier people like JF Sebastian who had progeria also couldn't leave. That's why even though there were still poor people on the streets, many of the buildings are empty and decaying. The streets are filthy presumably because there aren't enough willing humans left to clean them up. And androids, as the movie noted, are illegal on Earth. This dystopian future is almost polar opposite that of the shining "Star Trek" Earth. But that's one reason I love SF: you can have these opposites, and everything in between, and all of the stories can still be good and interesting.
@ptthatswhatshesaid
@ptthatswhatshesaid 2 күн бұрын
Yes 👌🏻 it doesn't need to be "our world", it "a world". And SF is great because you can basically go beyond what is actually possible at the moment and create any type of conditions and explore very deep themes (especially when it comes to ethical questions).
@Calamity_Jack
@Calamity_Jack 2 күн бұрын
@@ptthatswhatshesaid Exactly. And these alternate worlds don't even need to be outlandish. Time travel, a time-honored SF subject, enables authors to explore different themes and conditions, as you said, while keeping a more familiar environment. Really, SF allows more options for storytelling.

This is just a rare instance where the quality and depth of book sci-fi managed to bleed through into movies. It's an example of what science fiction really is. The film industry mostly hates sci-fi, and tries to make audiences hate it too. If you two ever get into Cowboy Bebop, it continues some of the emotions in this film, though the themes are more complex.

No, the replicants are not the villains of the film at all. They're presented as the antagonists at first. But IMO this is a very important choice. The whole point is that the replicants have more empathy than the humans and Dekkard finds his humanity from Roy. Roy is hunting Dekkard just like Dekkard hunts the replicants. And it teaches Dekkard what it's like to be a slave. And the audience shares Dekkard's perspective. 1st we just accept that the replicants are the bad guys but as we follow Dekkard we start to see from thier perspective. They just want to live, to be free and the humans use them and kill them with no empathy.

34:54 "Eyes! Why Eyes?!?!" The opening shot tells us it's *2019* - one short of *20/20* - Cautionary science fiction about runaway technology, especially about artifical life and artifical sentience; warn of the hubris of *short-sightedness.* The second shot is the first shot reflected in Holden's EYE. The VK machine is a high-tech EYE that "sees" replicants, by shining a red laser into your EYE The replicants all have that cool EYE reflection, including the owl. It's only the replicants, none of the human characters - except for Deckard in one shot where we start to suspect he may be one too. They find Tyrell by first interroating the EYE-maker. The replicants have perfect EYEs, but Tyrell wears coke-bottle glasses Both Leon and Roy's favorite method of murder are pushing in their victim's EYEs In lieu of having memories, the Replicants collect photographs. A photograph is a replicant of a memory; an image recorded by a camera, which is a replicant of an EYE. And Roy's iconic monologue begins with; "I have *seen* things..."

Hey Lucy, you are intrigued with future look of the Blade Runner world. It's actually realistic to have old looking computers in the "future". -------- Even today, our industrial stuff runs on hardware and software that's quite old. Same with military computer tech. ----------- Cutting edge consumer products are fine for us to use, but generally machinery like trucks, oil rigs, military aircraft and the like use older tech. Based on Philip K. Dicks’ book “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” Director Ridley Scott made major changes that the author was not happy with. They met where the director showed the author what he had done so far with the film. The author was blown away with what he saw and decided to wait to see what the final product would be. Tragically, the author passed away before the film was released. The major changes that the director did was to lay the foundation for a sequel that he was hoping to do someday…..the replicants have evolved to this time to be artificially created humans. All flesh genetically engineered. Each generation more human than human. Almost impossible to tell apart. Deckard (Harrison Ford) quit being a Blade Runner as he started seeing them as more human, it made him sick to have to kill them. Missing was the original ending in the theatrical release. Rachel was special to Tyrell, a replica of his late niece. No expiration date on her. She lives past four years. Like normal Humans Deckard and Rachel don’t know how much time they’ll have together. LUCY you were in step with the ending moments! One of the few! Ridley Scott the director put the question to rest. In his film he is a replicant, for the story he planned to do further.

The shining in the eyes of the characters is only seen by us the viewing audience. It is meant to let us know if a character is a Replicant. But people within the movie can't actually can't see it. Oddly enough in some scenes we see that same shine in the eyes of Deckard. I think the director did this to mess with our notions of what Deckard may be.

44:48 Yes. Decker was a Replicant. Nearly everyone who watches the movie misses that-mostly because they ignore the origami unicorn and it’s significance-that somehow the origami making detective would know Decker’s dreams speaks to him being a Replicant. In addition, there is a very brief glimpse of Decker’s eyes in one scene where he tells the female Replicant that he wouldn’t come after her if she ran (she saved his life) but “someone would.” When he says this his eyes momentarily flash red in the shadows and lighting-showing that he is not human. “How could it not know what it is?” The sad tragedy of the movie is that Decker, himself, did not know what he was.

@@blindlemonpledge2556Then why shoot the scene with the origami unicorn in the first place? And why do you think directors HAVE to make things glaringly obvious and apparent? Was it obvious that the brunette was a Replicant? Nope. She was a more advanced model and it took Decker longer to determine she was a Replicant than past models. The entire thrust of the movie is that there are androids walking about, living as humans, passing as humans, and come to find out they created one that didn’t even know she was a Replicant. You are SUPPOSED to question the humanity of everyone in the movie-or do you prefer films where the director explains things like a five year old? If so give Michael Bay a try. I think sometimes folks watch this movie and their mind is set on Deckard as the hero and replicants are the evil which needs killing. Not surprisingly, because this is exactly what 99% of action movies are about. So it's late in the movie before they start feeling empathy for the replicants. And as that type of movie, it is sort of lame. I think they can miss some of the subtleties of the story. In this reaction, she seems puzzled at Deckard's obvious emotional reaction to killing Zora, for example. So, Blade Runner is one of those films that develops nuances on multiple watches. I watched the original version first, back in the day. And say what you will about Ford's voice over, it explains things clearer and more quickly. I also felt that the flatness of the narration was just another indication of how inhuman humans can be and really set him in contrast with the full of life, desire, fear, love, anger the replicants displayed.

In the book (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick), the Earth is dying as a result of a limited nuclear war that has put radioactive matter into the atmosphere. That's why the sky is brown and it's always overcast. As the result, the human population are escaping to colonies on other planets. That's why there are so many empty or half-empty buildings, and Mr. Sebastian can have so much space. He's not allowed to leave Earth because of his genetic disorder, which is also caused by the radioactivity. This part of L.A. is one of the few cities which is still fairly crowded, but that's because people have been migrating there from other places and countries which have already emptied. So there are so many Japanese and Chinese people there, because L.A. still has a functioning economy and city government. That's why there is such haste to terraform the colony planets, and they use Replicants to tame all these hostile environments so that the human settlers can live there after the Replicants have done the dangerous work and died. The part which is disturbing to me is the fact that all the Replicants are under 4 years old. They are physically mature, and capable of murder, but they are still toddlers in terms of their consciousness, more or less. The fact that it is babies who are being used as slaves in this way is very cruel and cynical, in my opinion. The makers and the buyers all know how easily the Replicants can be manipulated, because they are infants in adults bodies, with no experience and not much free will. They can't give informed consent for anything they are told to do.

In the source material, Deckard is human. The director of this movie, Ridley Scott, believed Deckard to be a Replicant. Harrison Ford played Deckard as a human. This edition includes the unicorn dream which the director inserted to prove his point. The director of the sequel deliberately did not take sides. There was not enough money in the budget for the Replicant rebellion. It is not explained in the movie, but in this world, there has been a nuclear war. That is why it is dark and rai y all the time. It is also the reason that all the animals are manufactured. The sequel seems to have been created after listening to this Conversation. Please watch it. The central question Blade Runner poses is "what makes a human, human?"

@dggcreations
@dggcreations Күн бұрын
I thoroughly disagree withthis being the best version. This was the last version and the directors idea of what he wished it would have been. The graphics of this one was however improved. The best one was the original theatrical with voiceovers made to make it an old detective noir movie. The original explained things far better to those who werent familiar with the book. The director didnt want the voiceovers. But several audience tests of the non voice over version the director wanted failed to impress them. When the voice overs were added, a greater portion of the testors liked it better so the people on charge decided to put the voiceovers in. Also the first one explained that Rachel had no time limit like the early models. Sadly though this original movie barely even paid for itself and the investors. Then came several new versions like the directors cut that the director refused to put his name on and used the Alan Smithee name which in hollywood means the actual person refused to put their real name on it. The book did not in any way do anything to imply Deckard was a replicant. There were 6 diiferent versions released later all just to stroke producers and the directors egos and wallets. The happy ending for Rachel and Deckard was far prefered by me. Blade Runner 2049 in my opinion was barely understandable and really went off on Deckard and Rachel both being replicants. I hated BR 2049 as it was just made to serve the fans who wanted Deckard to be a replicant too. You also have to remember there wasnt much SCIFI in movies that had good stories and budgets except the space related ones. At that time there wasnt much to watch that presented the socalled good guys (Blade Runners) as cruel as the replicants they hunted. Also there was t much dystopian Scifi that showed the earth had become acrappy place to live only inhabited by people who couldnt afford to move off world. Now days most everyone has seen several such movies or TV shows. But this was quite unique when released. Also the scifi audience was much smaller and those movie people doing them either based their ideas as star trek or star wars poor clones. It took a decade or so after BR before this movie (during VCR days) that this took off and became a classic. It wasnt popular for some time. Also there was a period a few years after the original that they once again began running it in theaters as the new Blade Runner. Lots of people were pissed when they discovered it just had a few more minutes of footage but was essentially the same movie. Lots of angry people wanted their money back after realizing theyd been tricked into paying to watch this yet again. Most people expected the new Blade Runner to be a complete 2nd BR movie when they paid to see it, not a slightly modified version of the 1st. Once it eventually came out on DVDs, several different versions and alternate endings and scenes were added, different offerings depending on when and where and who you got it from. There was lots of fighting among those who produced it vs the director vs the fans imaginings. There has been a concerted effort to keep the original thatrical version unavailable especially the director who hated that version and wanted his new interpretation to be cannon. I admit that it fits better with the BR 2049. BR is now considered a classic but I highly advise to watch the original theatrical too with voiceovers if you can. It makes it far more understandable for those who have issues understanding all the alternate intentions the later versions didnt explain well.

Guys please understand when people make a film like this they normally choose a date kinda at random (not too close to now and not too far into the future). At no point during the making of this movie did the production team ever think this is what the US would look like 37 years in the future. People keep on saying that and it's starting to annoy me. 😡 (😉😊)

I highly recommend Ex Machina if you want more to think about in a sci fi film.

Is he deaf in his left ear? Why does he have only one headphone? Unless they are listening to the film on speakers, and are using the headphone as a mic.

They bleed and are not mechanical. The question is what does it mean to be human?

I agree 100% In my opinion the discussion around Deckart possibly being a replicant is much less interesting. These humans being created to be slaves (with specifics strengths and weaknesses) is a much more interesting topic!

"More human than human is our Motto" ... Interestingly 2024 looks to be the year of the Robot with mechanical and AI advances coming together to create the first useful personal humanoid Robot.

IMO he is not a replicant.

He shouldn't be because it ruins the whole point. The whole point is the humans suck. They have no empathy. They're slavers and murder replicants for wanting to be free. Dekkard kills and really has no empathy. At some point he must have started to feel some empathy because he quit. The replicants are fighting to be human and Roy helps Dekkard to find his humanity. Now if Dekkard is a replicant his whole history is probably fake. This is probably his 1st mission and all his memories are implanted. And his whole finding his humanity from a replicant it ruined.

I have to say that I agree yes, it becomes kinda pointless.

Although there has been this controversy about whether Deckard was a replicant himself, if you think about it logically, there is no way he could have been a replicant. By Tyrell's, own admission Rachel was created as an experiment - essentially being better than the Nexus 6 replicants that Deckard has been hunting down for many years, so she was the pinnacle of Tyrell's achievements to date. Yet Deckard was a blade runner for years prior to the Nexus 6 creation. So there's just no way he could have been a replicant and been so advanced. It's just not possible, logically and temporally. He would be an inferior model and not capable of competing with a Nexus 6 IF he was a replicant himself. The film is all about forcing you to think about slavery, is it right if we create our own slaves.
