Sam, I have had a rake of 10 of these for a few years. Some of which i believe are early ones. Yes they were that good in 2007! As for the finish I have never looked close enough to see just how the teak finish is done, with the dots. I just asked my friend who works in printing and he thinks that due to the paint used it is necessary to do it that way make it possible to represent the wood grain, and take advantage of the human brain filling in the gaps.....To me they look absolutely fine! No one views N from as close is you have normally ( I appreciate that its necessary to review them) Also N gauge coupling usually requires a little help, due to the lightness of most stock. You have to remember that the very small locos in N (yes even an A4 is just a tiny loco in N) might be pulling a prototypical rake of 10 or 15 coaches, so they have to light. Dont forget many N gauge layouts also have gradients.....Diecast would NOT be helpful in the least, so I feel you're a little harsh in that criticism!! Otherwise a decent review.

Hi Sam! Loving the N gauge reviews! Keep 'em coming! Just bear in mind that you can't make the rolling stock much heavier, otherwise the little motors in the locos wouldn't be able to haul more than a couple of them up inclines or around tight curves! Dapol do a great range of N gauge rolling stock, most of it excellent, and much better than the Brittania you looked at! I think I've mentioned before that their diesels are pretty good too! All the best, Ian.

It looks like faded oxide, the colour wagons were often painted in. I don't think there is one single correct colour, even when new and freshly varnished, but the Dapol colour is way off any variation. There are a number of preserved coaches around for reference. The base colour really should be some shade of brown, somewhere between light-ish neutral brown to a rich reddish brown colour. I suspect they were attempting the latter but got it wrong.

More N-Guage please Sam. I got back into model railways back in December, some 35 years since I built a layout for my son! I debated for some time whether to go OO or N and finally plumped for the latter as there is so much more scope for more realistic length trains in a limited space. I dismissed TT-120 almost immediately as there was little in the range that appealed to me. During the past four months i have built an "L" shaped end to end layout with a twin track terminus at each end with loop-back facilities for the locos. I am really impressed with the level of detail on all the rolling stock and locos. My one frustration is with the couplings which I find can be unreliable and, as your video shows, sometimes need manual intervention to couple up. I have replaced mine with the latest "Hunt Elite" magnetic couplings which are super reliable. They currently need manual intervention to uncouple but I understand Hunts are currently developing an automatic uncoupling system for them which I really hope will be successful as they are the one thing missing from what I need for my layout.

Yes, they were like that when first released. I have many in various liveries, with the blood and custard probably being the best imo. You should look at the Dapol Maunsell's with their beautiful pull out corridors. Graham Farish Mk1's are pretty good but feature Bachmann's make believe RRP. I can't wait to see you slate their latest Mk2f coaches, with no details or features, yet a 00 price tag...

Farish do some amazing coaches such as the faux teak Thompsons. Pricey but so good! The Dapol ones look good with lightbars fitted (this was a later addition a few years after release. If they are in the blue boxes as opposed to the old ones they have light fitting capabilities). Some lightbars have been known to cause roof damage due to faulty electronics; I have had a couple let me down this way. The Dapol teaks look much better with a dark wash applied.

I've got quite a lot of these Dapol LNER coaches in all three liveries (teak, crimson/cream and maroon). I think they were trend-setting in their day for the kinematic couplings and general detail. I think the only update has been to add the pick-ups and fittings to take a light bar. Compared to the Dapol GWR Collett coaches which were introduced a year earlier (according to Hatton's) the Colletts have bogie-mounted couplings and deeply inset windows, features that have never been updated. Dapol's entry to the UK N-gauge market really raised expectations in terms of detail, if not always running qualities. As for running teak coaches behind a GWR pannier, at least the loco is age-appropriate to the coaches (which the Britannia wouldn't be). I believe some coaches worked inter-regional services and you could get "foreign" coaches turning up across the network.

If you're looking for some new N scale review ideas, maybe look into some Kato Japanese steam locomotives. I bought a C57 4-6-2 for shell swap to an American prototype and it's an excellent runner. The 'tumble-home', seen clearly 'end on', is superbly done, unlike Hornby's later (otherwise superb) Gresleys. Hats off to Dapol :-). Also remember that Gresley, from 1905 to 1911, was Carriage and Wagon Superintendent of the Great Northern, prior to becoming CME of that railway, so Gresley carriages go back a long way...

Original releases had the same detail level, but no pickups and light bar socket (something you missed as you need to unclip the roof to expose this). The bogies were also inboard moreso, to cope with the kinematic coupler. The bogies and bogie position were changed to be more realistic (though not totally accurate - for that you need the older Minitrix model) on the later runs like yours.

Hi Sam, I've got some of the Dapol Maunsell coaches in SR green which to my eyes are brilliantly painted. I don't think I've paid more than £18 (the most recent from Rails was under £16). Of course I've blown the savings on buying Light Bars for the coaches. You do have to be very careful fitting the light bars as on some Dapol coaches you take the roof off. With the Maunsell coaches you have to take the whole body off. Another feature is that you can extend the connecting corridors. Now I suspect that you are going the review Dapol M7 0-4-4, please note that although it is a small loco it is minimum R2, I tried running mine on R1 but It really did not like it. In particular it hated points placed on a curve ... derailed frequently!

These were good coaches for their time, and still stand up fairly well to this day. The roof detail above the corridors is prone to damage, your brake coach is damaged out of the box there, but otherwise they're fairly robust. I've had issues with the kinematic couplings sagging really quite frequently, which on an exhibition layout running 15+ coach trains is not ideal when your trains divide at random. The other issue I've had was a bad batch of lighting bars some years ago, that one resulted in 6 of my Gresleys roofs melting. Swap to magnetic couplers, and stay away from Dapols lighting bars, and these are a decent model for their age. Probably best suited to BR Maroon, the LNER Teak and BR Crimson/Cream liveries have been somewhat questionable over the years.

@aleopardstail
@aleopardstail Ай бұрын
used to be N scale locos cost twice what OO would, but coaches were about half or less these days I think the "money" isn't in the materials, or really the tooling, or the production slots - its all design, company costs and shipping, hence stuff not being all that different with the costs. to be honest the Dapol N scale stuff is some of the better priced stuff and usually very nice models the colours being a bit light is likely down to the "scale lightening" effect and yes up close can look odd, ditto that weird way of doing the wood grain, but N is very much "three foot test" stuff. heck some of us have enough trouble seeing them - get yourself some of the old Lima Mk1 to compare too.. and yes the N gauge couplers are $%^&&%$£$%! doddle to pick vehicles up and manually uncouple, royal pain for auto uncoupling (the PECO ones are the best for this) but its very common to have to have a bit of impact to get the sprung ones to couple. if I was still working in N I'd be happy to have a rake of these, they do look a lot nicer than the railroad Hornby OO ones as well (not as nice as the really good ones though). very good review :)

N couplings... meh, bain of my playing trains life, this will be a regular occurence in your reviews Sam, different heights, different manufacturers, etc etc, they rarely couple cleanly and just a small defect in your track can cause the train to uncouple. Sam, how long did you spend building the haunted mansion attraction in Minecraft? Looks like a lot of work has gone into it, not that I understand any! You are a bright lad, sometimes it’s easy to forget you are not only good at reviewing trains and 3D design. I have no interest in video games whatsoever, but for some reason I willingly sat through a video of a British guy giving a tour of his virtual theme park. 😆

The colouring on the teak coaches is known as 'Scumble'. Bizzare I know.

N GAUGE please. It's not N scale. Thank you 😊

Actually it's N SCALE, scale is a ratio of the model size in proportion to its real life counterpart, whereas gauge is the distance between the rails

@@bradsmckay We will have to agree to disagree. The 'N' refers to the track GAUGE of Nine (9) millimetres. The SCALE is either 1/148 or 1/160 depending on whether it's British or European stock.

Colour looks far to 'PINK' . Compared with photos of real coaches which look quite a dark brown base especially on older stock

Sam, please answer. Will the Hornby Class 87 review come out this month? The suspense is killing me. Just say yes or no so I can put my mind to rest. I’m finding it very difficult to focus on my exams because of you...

Blaming some one else because of your issues of focusing and trying to force them to sort your problem out is very toxic and narcissistic behaviour.
