My Mom’s brother served on U-Boats from 1940-1942 . He was lost on his 4th war patrol . She said he was the most wonderful , funny guy you could ever imagine , but put country first , himself second . He was NOT a Nazi , few common soldiers were . War is such an evil waste . When will we learn ?

All German Soldiers swore an oath to Hitler. So all German Soldiers where Nazi Minions, except those who didn't served voluntary. Especially the early volunteers where mainly Enthusiastic about the war.

PAPAAAAAAA!!! I asked my Mom ( who was 12 when Germany invaded Poland ) if she was ashamed of being German after learning of the atrocities they committed , treatment of Jews , etc . She said she was ignorant of the truth because the media , radio , newsreels of the day were Nazi propaganda . She believed Poland , and then France and Great Britain were the aggressors .As for the youth , many were 18 and 19 years old and caught up in a wave of ‘duty for country ‘ . Vast majority were not Nazis , just ordinary soldiers ( and very good ones at that ) . Sorta like the North Korean soldiers of today , they are ignorant of the truth and mistakenly believe Kim is God like .

That’s amazing! You have every reason to be proud, don’t let ANYONE tell you different!! He sounds like he was a very very brave man. My own grandfather was also a submariner on the US side. I’m so sorry he was lost!! 🙏❤️ I bet you both our relatives are up there somewhere right now, sharing war stories over a heavenly beer haha. 🇺🇸❤️🇩🇪

The Germans lost about 70% of of their U-Boat crews. I'd imagine those in the film, while not happy to surrender, were happy to be alive.

I read somewhere that of the 830 u-boats on active service 696 were lost (84%)……..a truly horrendous casualty rate whoever’s side you were on.

My Grandpa Captain Robin Gambier can be seen at 1:28 and was present at the signing. My father has an ariel view of the entire U-Boat fleet. Years later, in 1988, whilst quite drunk at a Bavarian strong bier festival I met by chance, a very cute Bavarian lady, we married, had 2 kids and have been together ever since.

After the war a lot of German girls came to England as nurses. My father got friendly with one, he always said to me you might have had a German mother.

I felt that was so good when the officers saluted them. Different breed of man back then. My grandfather served in both world wars. My mom was stationed in the WAVES in London. She was a PRN at the time and did a stint in Germany for 3 mos. My grandfather broke his leg. The English drs., fixed it and he was on his way. He was captured and the Germans offered to fix his leg and they did to perfection. Never a bad word was said against the Germans, ever, in our home.

Eisenhower murdered 1.5 mill surrendered German pows in the Rhineland Meadows. No food, no water, left to the elements, no latrines. As he stated "he wanted every German dead." It was a war that the Zionists caused not Hitler. How old are you 12?

@@sparx180 No he did not those allegations came from a novelist who spread a conspiracy theory in fact the "missing million" were old men and young boys in the Volkssturm (People's Militia) released without formal discharge and transfers of POWs to other allies control areas. Maj. Ruediger Overmans of the German Office of Military History in Freiburg who wrote the final volume of the official German history of the war estimated that the total death by all causes of German prisoners in American hands could not have been greater than 56,000 approximately 1% of the over 5,000,000 German POWs in Allied hands exclusive of the Soviets. Those death were mainly due to a food shortage and the outbreak of diseases since the entire continent of Europe was on rationing after the war including Britain.

Shortly after the Armistice in November 1918, Harwich was where dozens of German U-boats officially surrendered to the Allied forces. Their exact number is not known, but there were estimated to be between 120 and 150 U-boats in total, along with various other German ships and support machinery.

My Grandfather took the surrender of the Kriegsmarine in Norway May 1945. Was given a Luger , Sword and Binoculars by the German Officer who was a Prussian Military type. The Zeiss Binoculars/ Luger with Nazi insignia There was deep respect between 🇬🇧 🇩🇪 Submarine Services.

German uboats had 39.000 crewmembers - the war on the seas took 29.000 lives so yes the uboat crews seen in this film was the Lucky ones

I have a number of the marvellous "Navies of the Second World War" books from MacDonalds and they list every vessel followed by its fate. With the ships you read "lost at Battle of.." or "scrapped.." or "Indian Navy INS.." etc but with the subs there are lots of "lost, cause unknown" or "failed to return" etc as well as the known losses. Have to respect all submariners.

@@johncowen452 Not quite true, but I know what you mean. Read “The Good War” by Studs Terkel (?). Was a good book. He interviewed many common folk for the book, and it just seems luck on if you had a good war or not. Oh, sure, if you lost both arms, for example, you didn’t have a good war. But for others, good job, well paid, didn’t lose anyone close. You might think you had a good time of it…

I think this footage was taken at Lisnshally on Lough Foyle, just outside Londonderry, where the U-Boats formally surrendered in 1945. Londonderry was the main operational port for the Royal Navy during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Londonderry ? Huh !. WTF is that place ?. Main operational base for Battle of the Atlantic - on no Atlas I own. Sincere respect to all who served. My Grand Mas' neighbour killed Convoy HX 228 . Night March 10th / 11th 1943 - reverential respect for his sacrifice.

Official name is, and was then, Londonderry. This was however shortened to 'Derry' by all. The so called religious/political connotations sre a relatively recent thing thought up by those who do not know.

Excellent footage, I've only ever seen photos of the surrendered fleet. This is in Maydown in Lough Foyle Northern Ireland. The old jetty's are just about still there next to the oil terminal. After this the U-Boats were taken out to sea and scuttled or used for target practice.

These German sailors are lucky the war ended. Had it continued the majority would have been killed in action. The U boat service lost over 40000 KIA. This was the highest death rate percentage for any combat unit in Germany. Anti-sub technology had gotten so good that these subs were death traps. Some officers were shown smiling and I think I would too having been spared a horrible watery death.

Do not forget about the British and American bomber crews, whose losses were even higher. Between 1940 and 1945 a total of 1.4 million British and US bombers flew to Germany. Allied Bomber Command lost around 21,000 aircraft and 140,000 men. A third of all casualties of British and American soldiers were members of bomber crews. Military service with Allied bomber crews was apparently even more dangerous and deadly than military service with German U-boat crews. RIP for both.

Most likely no sound recorded in the first place...recording equipment was a bulky, separate affair...sound in those days was optically recorded, hence the clipboards you see to coordinate the movements, etc.... onto the film The sounds you hear in ww2 battle footage as shown in theatres, was dubbed in later as it was impractical.

This is the surrender after the Germans had surrendered. Many U-boats were scuttled, several dozens surrendered. Air ships played a major role in the N Atlantic fighting the U-boats, so it makes sense one is flying overwatch.

Die meisten wurden verschrottet. Nach dem Krieg waren sie wertlos und für eine Weiterverwendung veraltet, denn es gab mit dem neuen U-Booten vom Typ XXI schon wieder eine bahnbrechende Weiteretwicklung, nach deren Muster später alle Staaten ihre neuen U-Boote bauten.

@@probekonto1434 Naja, nach dem Krieg war alles andere wichtiger als daran zu denken, Rüstungsmaterial für die Nachwelt zu erhalten. Die Menschen hatten die Schnauze voll von Krieg und Waffen. Der Krieg hat in allen beteiligten Ländern unmengen von Rohstoffen gefressen, so dass Schrott sehr wertvoll war, um die verbrauchten Ressourcen wieder aufzufüllen.

No, hundreds were also sunk by the Germans themselves at the end of the war or, as shown in the video here, handed over to the victorious powers, who later scrapped them. In the meantime there was already a new generation of submarines that made these VII c boats superfluous.

There was only 4 uboats landing in Argentina - - maybe Adolf and Eva took the Journey out of Berlin this way but the big quistion must be giving the fact that the uboats came to south- America Argentina in 1946 - and as war ended in 1945 so almost a whole year after ww2 ended , how and where could they get hold of DIESEL and FOOD - cant figurer it out - WHAT

Possibly a P-47 Thunderbolt as they were very popular with the USAF in Northern Ireland during WW2. Maydown airfield was right next to where they U-Boats surrendered.
