Cody Lundin from Dual Survival on Discovery, important questions like “what's the best way to fight a bear?” And “when is it a good time to drink some pee”. A huge thanks to Cody Lundin who dropped some serious knowledge and was a great sport.

The book “Sands of the Kalihari” (made into an excellent film) describes a water retrieval system where, using Cody’s guidance for finding likely spots for wet sand, the desert survivalist digs a slanted hole deep into the sand and creates a slightly widened chamber at the deepest, wettest level. The chamber is filled by a packed ball of grass. A tube (a hose, hollow reed, etc) is extended to the center of the grass ball in the chamber. The tunnel is backfilled with the sand (the grass ball prevents backfilling of the chamber). When the above ground end of the tube is sucked, the vacuum created in the chamber draws the sand’s water into it and up the tube to the mouth for drinking or filling a canteen. A Bushman technique.

Les Stroud once dug a small hole, peed in the hole, placed a small container in the middle of the hole(not submerged), then placed a small tarp(it was a plastic bag from his gear) over the pee hole and he weighed the corners of the tarp with rocks. Placing a rock in the middle of the tarp creates a dimple. Using the sun to evaporate the water out of the pee, then allowing it to condense on the bag/tarp and drip into the container in the middle.

A friend and I tried to see if we could get lost. We did a bunch of twists and turns in the woods, lost track of our location in relation to his house, then walked in one direction. 3hrs later, we hit the main highway in the area. Had our gear just in case. But it was a great lesson to us. That was in the eastern US. If it were the west, no way. You can drive for hours and not even see a building out there. So even if you get to a road, you might still be in trouble.

@@surecutsam6298 did he even attempt “Alone”? Leaving your family and life for a potential year, for $500k isn’t really enticing to a lot of people. If he were on it, and committed to it, I would bet anything he would win. Also, lawsuits are complicated. You, nor I have any clue what actually happened, and we never will. Discovery is notorious for encouraging drama above actual knowledge. It doesn’t surprise me at all to hear they edit video to suit their agenda. Harder to prove such things, though. Most importantly, that is none of my business, or I would ask when I take my next class this weekend. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@L Really, it's none of your business and yet you're handing him your business but won't ask any questions.... You sound like a true sycophantic survivalist.... No doubt Cody appreciate you, as well as himself, or are you really actually the same person? BTW, in case you're interested, I've got the real Eiffel tower, AND Tower Bridge for sale, completely disassembled and ready for shipment and easy re-assembly much like IKEA furniture, and don't hesitate as interest of completely off the grid.... 😉

@@surecutsam6298 having a spat with tv producers has absolutely nothing to do with survival. That’s so ridiculous. Also, I’ve only seen like 3 partial episodes when my father was showing me who he was. Yeah, I had no idea who the guy was before I wanted to take a class, and I’ve only met him once, but I’m his sycophant. 🙄 Are you sure he didn’t hurt your feelings at some point? Feeling a bit insecure someone knows more than you and is praised about it? Poor baby. I’ve listened to the man’s lectures, watched him make the things he claims he can make, and when I was having a pretty severe asthma attack, he never left my side and did everything in his power to help me through it. He is as genuine as a human being comes. Sam, I say you need to get a hobby and get out into the world. KZfaq is definitely not the place for that kind of weak constitution. Your response had nothing to do with mine, and it shows hard.

I feel I had to write this. As an Australian I know snakes pretty well. If your bitten by a snake on the arm say, wrap a compression bandage with medium pressure all the way up the arm! The venom doesn’t travel in the blood stream, it travels in your muscles. Every movement you make is one more movement closer to that venom reaching your organs. The compression slows the travel of the venom. DONT MOVE AT ALL IF YOU CAN!! I know a guy who was bitten by brown snake, we are taking top 5 venomous snake in the world. He sat under a tree for 2 days and didn’t move at all.. He survived. Had he have moved he most likely would have Died. Anyway, to recap.. compression bandage the whole limb if possible. Don’t move if possible and get to medical help. If you have someone with you, make them carry you if they can..

True desert dweller here. Knows if you need to find water to live, you'll just die. It takes more work and sweat to dig a solar still than the water you'll get back from it. Same from digging for it in the dry river bed. Drinking cacti pulp will give you diareah or worse and leave you more dehydrated. Not to mention the fact that you require significantly more water in arid regions, thus making water acquisition and consumption a constant logistical problem.

I can remember sporting goods stores selling "snake bite kits" consisting of an olive green rubber "egg" that worked as a suction cup and a small razor blade to cut the bite. Hell, it looks like they are still for sale.

@@JohnDoe-ff5gz None of course, just like Lundin. Both of us have the faculties to know that's not 'survival' but starvation tolerance and nobody is pretending any thriving. That's why blokes like Lundin, Canterbury, Teti, Graham et al..... Stay as far away as they can while they pad the bank accounts on fake survival shows with a camera crew, food fetchers and wot not in attendance, animals placed in situ and executed and bleating lawsuits by Lundin claiming loss of potential income for quitting......suppose he thought that's where his survival skills really were, but the judge would have none of it, and he walked barefooted and emptyhanded outta the court room....anyone googling Cody Lundin court case...shall find accordingly 😎

I have been in rainforest (Panama) during a drought......there was very very little water in the hills. You had to get down off the ridges to find water .....even then we had to dig out sand and clear a little pool that became like 3" deep. If not keep going down. There were actual rivers in the very low country.
