I car camp a couple of times a year and, even at paid campgrounds, good cell coverage isn't guaranteed and antennas in phones are generally crappy. One of the things I bring with me (just in case) is an internet hotspot, connected to a really good antenna, and use wi-fi calling along with that. It doesn't help away from the campsite, but it's something.

No cell service in most places I've gone in the West. I always made my daughter carry basics including a whistle and taught her to turn around every few steps. I charge my phone in my car overnight with the car off. I can run my 12v electric blanket all night with my car off, too. Love that!

Watch your amp draw. Blanket like 3 amps, phone around the same. Any lights...most batteries are around 75 amp hour, you can only use about half that...also discharge rate...so realistically you have about 6 hours on a car battery with a blanket and a phone charger...

Would not recommend that! Your cigarette lighter outlet, is a VERY SMALL WIRE! Heavy long draw can torch the wire. Just get a warmer sleeping bag. If you plan ahead. Eat alot of beans, afew days before you go out! That way, you can HEAT your sleeping bag with GAS! 🤣 JUST DON'T LIGHT A MATCH!!

Something else I do with my walkie talkies, If I leave on a hike I place a note on the dash of my vehicle, visible through the windshield with information about how many in the party, direction, etc. I also include the radio frequency I keep my radio tuned to. I have a couple cheap blister pack FRS radios for this since they are very common if I need rescue then odds are a rescue team will have one, or can just go to walmart and buy one easily enough. I have other, better, radios of course, but the FRS ones are cheap and too easy for this application.

I'm a General licensed ham radio operator so I carry a small light Yagi antenna with my handheld so I can get out if needed from a hill top. If I'm going really remote, a personal locator beacon would be my choice

@Chungustav I have been hearing about “mesh” networks (“LoRa”?) lately for comms. I know literally nothing about them. Do you know much about them? Are they portable, low power draw, and effective? Any resources for a beginner? I have issues with my memory so not sure I could pass the Ham tests and was thinking this might be a solution I could use?
@nimroddiaries_
@nimroddiaries_ 3 ай бұрын
@m1cajah they are light and very portable. They work similar to a cell network, as in you need multiple to create and efficient 'net.' For a group they'd be great to communicate. They will not provide comms from BFE to civilization. They are about the same as handheld radios, limited in range. Hope that helps.

I just got an Anker Solix C1000. If I had seen this pack when i was shopping, i might have accepted the drop in kwh. As it stand though, having that easy 1kwh number to work with makes it really easy to quick math in my head how much power output i have and how many devices i can run.

While I don't have personal experience with them, I'm told that regarding cell phones and walkie-talkies, there are apps and accessories that will let you use your phones AS two-way radios: maybe that's worth looking into in a future video? I'd spring for it . . .

I have a EcoFlow River 2 and also a Weboost Cell booster. When we camp in the bush you are lucky to even get basic cell with a booster let alone any where close to a normal data link. I have mulled about getting a second antenna and making it MIMO but that is kind of defeats the purpose lol.

How do the 2 ways work in woods? I bought a fairly expensive 50 mile (line of sight) range ones. Figured they would be good to have a set incase of an emergency so i could stay in contact with my family. But they would not even reach about 5 miles trying to get a signal out of the city. So buildings obviously destroyed that option for me. But i never tried them in the woods. What kind of reduction in range should i expect?
@pB-vp3mo
@pB-vp3mo 3 ай бұрын
Line of Sight! If you are elevated it is farther. The curvature of the earth calculation is fairly complex unless you are a math whiz. Everything in between including air can effect it. You might get 50 miles in outer space. Your results are about normal.

If you're actually going camping 'in the wilderness' and not an RV park - keep the technology for 'emergencies' - PUT THE FREAKIN' PHONES DOWN and enjoy nature! Maybe catch a falling star and the constellations instead of a movie. Pull the ear buds and listen to the birds and the wind instead of Taylor Swift. Unplug...

You're forgetting the most important thing: get right with God. Get you a KJV; read the book of John (4th book in the new testament). Believe the gospel 1 cor 15: 1-4. Get saved. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV - Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
