Barnacles are crustaceans like crabs and lobsters but undergo a metamorphosis where they become anchored to one spot as adults. Most attach themselves headfirst to a solid structure such as a rock, piece of wood, ship, or sea animal then filter out food with their feet. A few species are parasites of crabs. Infection causes the victim to produce barnacle eggs instead of their own, but they are fooled into caring for the barnacle eggs like their own children. The concept of parasitic barnacles has been previously explored in the game We Need to Go Deeper. There has been at least one confirmed case of a barnacle larva getting into a man's hand after getting a cut. The larva attached itself to the tendon of the hand, causing severe pain and motion limitations until it was surgically removed.

It might be fun if a game had optional mechanics that mess with the whole “I can hide here! Why am I gonna need to hide?” thing. Like, a run option that popped up partway through, but it turned out running just made noise that attracted the thing hunting the player and didn’t actually help with getting away. Or spots that can be hidden in, but it turns out those are spots the monster hides in to recover stamina, and you run the risk of walking directly into its clutches. Just. Fun little things that play on the expectations of common horror game mechanics.
@Bluesit32

My God I just realized something. At first I assumed they must have done the lazy method and just made the player camera move to simulate the rocking of a ship but at 1:01 you can see the chains lean in the same direction that the ship is rocking in. I applaud that! Edit: Also as for the "mannequins" that is a real effect that can happen to a corpse if it is left exposed to salt/sea air for a while, the body is petrified.

I am 80% sure the whistling does nothing during this demo but likely will be useful in later areas after the player gets thrown, same with the hide mechanic which didn't seem too useful outside of that one sequence. The dev probably just added it so as to give people the idea of the mechanics and also because tricking the player into using the whistling out of their own decision, even if it's not doing anything, makes the player more alert to the enviroment and helps create the fear just by having them pay attention to the statues answering, overall making them feel more scared about any of them jumping at them. Would also be possible that the full game may use it, but dev decided to not use it during the demo and just focus in the enviroment fear aspect.
@Nyax50Lopez
@Nyax50Lopez Жыл бұрын
Ngl the whistle making the players get tricked is a nice aspect. Like 50/50 chance it can be sentient or bad. Overall maybe they shouldn't focus too much on the environment horror overall. The whistling mechanic is genius. It's actually much more scary than I'd expect it to be. Reminds me of that one really short game, where you're looking for your dog on a farm, and run around calling the dog. You do it a lot to get an idea of where the dog is, as he barks back, and get used to hearing it. Then, the monster arrives and anytime you call for the dog the monster chasing you mimics your voice, but its broken and evil sounding. Just... Off. Things like that are such great horror elements that don't get used nearly enough.

This game does such a good job at making the player uneasy and on edge thinking a jump scare will happen at any moment, but doesn't. The sounds, graphics, and attention to detail does great at setting the horror mood without using other common tactics. I think this game is going to be amazing when the full play comes out.

One thing is about decomposition of bodies in some controlled environments like areas on ships, is that they tend too last longer due to lack of animals, "natural" temperature, and humidity. No expert here, but that could explain why the look at least "better" then what you'd expect. Edit: Still smell like shit though, your bowels keep workin' for a short amount of time when you die from what I know of.
@Bluesit32
@Bluesit32 Жыл бұрын
I had similar thoughts. Maybe they were drying out due to the salty air? It's actually the opposite though. The bowels and bladder are kept in check by muscles. When someone dies, the muscles relax, immediately releasing anything held in. It's the thing they never show in movies.

Ok so as far as I can tell how the statue mechanic works is basically checking for danger. It said the statues wont whistle back if your near them but that also means if the monster is near them they also wont reply. So when you whistle the direction you get the reply from means that direction is safe.

Outside of when the monster grabbed you at the end, this was genuinely terrifying and well made! I hate the trope of long dark hallways but it definitely was a clever redirection that revealed we missed a whole room of “crew” around the tv. The whistling is a horrifying thing because making sound is the *last* thing you would ever do in this situation unless absolutely necessary and to make it a mechanic to prevent the sentient ones from getting you, is truly spine chilling to me. I cannot wait for this game to come out. I’m hopeful its not too expensive but i hope the devs make the price fair for the work for the work they’ve done!!

this is one of the best horror game demos i've ever seen very subtle and low-tempo start where you're just investigating shit, and there's no stupid fucking 300 decibel orchestra blasting in your ears every single time you find a pool of blood or see the monster. i hate chase music because it's just white noise that diminishes the effects of being chased; it is much more terrifying to know that it's behind you and the game is just like "oh hey yeah that's happening, btw you better press shift". aside from a lack of foosteps of the monster- which i do feel it could use (just not bowel-shaking mr x / nemesis stompystomps)- the way the lighting and sound design was used here is REALLY GOOD. there is an absurdly high amount of polish and proof of concept here that is so so refreshing to see in this industry. i am most certainly going to be following this game now.

This is very neat. I was expecting the various statues around to be camouflage for one that looks the same and was so certain the first time you got to the vent with the four guys opposite and it stopped whistling back that you were toast and one of them was a monster. But the design it has is so immensely cool. Got a few Monstrum vibes from this atmosphere too, would love to see that played again.

Very Outlast vibes with the general layout and music use in intense, suspenseful situations. And of course, LOCKERS. I hope its kinda a spiritual successor.
