Yes i know at times the framerate is a bit iffy. Partly because we are asking beam to do crazy stuff, partly because i could probably do with a pc upgrade and partly because it seems to record laggier than it is when i'm actually playing it. I try to fix it as much as possible but there are limits

Wreckfest has a go at it, but really Beam is already somewhat on the ragged edge of how much you can simulate at a reasonable speed. There *is* a "simplified physics" option, but annoyingly that only does what you want for AI cars. For players, it just turns collisions with anything but terrain off entirely and only considers the raw geometry of the moving parts against the ground (doesn't even calculate self-collision of vehicle parts), so kind of useless for most MP modes other than perhaps strictly-no-contact racing or one-at-a-time sprint trials / long jumps / etc.

I think respawning should be disallowed in this game mode unless someone truly gets stuck. Then damage infected take is persistent, because it seems like they get a massive advantage over the survivors who have no way to fight back or defend themselves.
@TlalocTemporal
@TlalocTemporal Жыл бұрын
That would really feed into the zombie survival aspect too! Broken undead cars mobbing the survivors. I wonder if key parts like engines, driveshafts, steering suspension, and fuel can be set to slowly regenerate up to at least 20%, to ensure you get heavily broken, but still vaguely drivable zombie cars?
@Ixarus6713
@Ixarus6713 Жыл бұрын
@@TlalocTemporal that was my thoughts essentially. It makes sense to have a slower, undead horde chasing the mostly healthy survivors. Maybe they drain down or repair up to 20% or something over time, and slowly turn instead of instantly becoming a zombie, creating a temporary 3rd neutral class.

@tahrey
@tahrey Жыл бұрын
Ahh dammit I just wrote a really long comment on this subject thinking it had been mentioned in the video, when actually it's that I'd seen you say this earlier. Yeah, the drivetrain calcs don't seem to be anywhere near as frequent as the rest of the physics for some reason, even though at heart they're amongst the simpler parts. You can see that in how the tacho UI (and engine sound) stutter or hang up sometimes particularly if you've not long spawned a new vehicle, it seems almost like it just gives up on updating the values for a split second because it's run out of processing time or something, and hasn't any way to intelligently schedule that to happen at least once per rendered frame, or more often when the graphics may be delayed for some reason (loading in assets etc). Feels almost like it's every other frame perhaps, which isn't really much of an issue if you're running at 48fps or higher but is very noticeable when your framerate is marginal. Like it not only "plays" slower, but starts to show weird calculation artefacts because it's become somewhat unhinged from the underlying body physics sim and how the drive power / torque interacts with those other forces on the vehicle. The standout example that came to mind being CVTs towards the top of their ratio range on full power, something funky happens around the transition point from having constant power and gradually falling torque thanks to a smoothly (?) varying ratio, to the power and torque being more dynamic but the ratio constant, maybe because the last step is a small fraction of the others or something. Something glitchy and cyclical starts happening and the car basically ends up unable to accelerate any further despite having the power and spare revs to do so, and even seems to rock a bit on its suspension. Or having trouble moving off with a low powered engine and an automatic gearbox, or a "fake electric" (from before they had true e-motor support - set up an ICE with a very quiet exhaust, perfectly smooth idle at zero rpm, and torque all the way down). Instead of revving up to the converter stall speed and sitting there (whether or not that produced enough torque at the wheels to move the vehicle, on a steep hill...), or pulling smoothly away from 1rpm (the clutch engagement speed) with whatever torque it was set up to have at that point, it'd just sit and jitter like the engine / motor was completely overloaded. Like something was being divided by, or subtracted from, by too high a factor caused by temporal stretching and it killed the output, when the more powerful and continually-spinning engines it was designed for have enough slack in them to be able to lose a few extra lbft or rpm during the launch process (or have iffy "load" calculations, backlash from wheels through to engine, etc) without anyone really noticing it. And the momentary thrust would cause the suspension to buck a bit, and then the whole thing would reset just as that settled back down... (unless of course you're in a game like this where any differential in your ability to leap off the line vs your opponents is very apparent) Putting it into slo-mo or finding a way to pull the fps back up instantly cured the problem. Like not even a recovery period of more than maybe half a real-world second, it just resynced at the end of the current cycle and then continued normally. And of course, all the extra lag caused by the online stuff can't help that at all.

I think I talked briefly with one of the beam devs responsible for that side of things in an older video (either comments or more likely stream chat), and they seemed both kinda overprotective of their creation in the face of even constructive criticism / curious enquiry about how it works and the possibility of introducing additional functionality, but also of the opinion that it's all so complicated and interconnected that nobody could possibly do the fairly simple things I was suggesting (e.g. manumatics) or pick it all apart and rebuild it so you could... Disappointing, but it did at least explain the very weird reality-breaking effects experienced when e.g. trying to bolt a CVT (that seems to act like a particularly cursed type of automatic) to a "manual" clutch (set up to work like a centrifugal, before those were added) instead of a torque converter. Meanwhilst there's at least one moderately popular repo mod (shiftlogic?) which adds all kinds of improvements and functionality to the automatics at least... so it's probably not as impossible as was suggested, they maybe just didn't want to be stressed with adding more things to their existing to-do list. Also one particularly relevant thing to this video is that the engine/drivetrain force and speed (and shift decision) calculations seem to slow down with the framerate, even if the rest of the physics haven't yet hit the same wall, which very much messes with how they respond. CVTs can get very unhappy even at 20-30fps, and I bet the autos are way more slushboxy than normal too. Though really the main issue is failing to kick down with any vigour when given full throttle after coasting, which seems to affect a lot of base game cars including the default D-series, and that seems to be a maybe deliberate choice as there are adjustable aspects like "aggression" and how long it takes the bias to change in the actual transmission setup files for each vehicle, so it doesn't matter how good your fps is then. However, one thing that seems to be forgotten by many of the players is that there's almost always a way to overcome that. CVTs have sport mode or fake-manual shifting. Modern autos have full semi-manual mode available, and older ones can still be dropped into 2 and 1 (plz Beam devs when can we also have 3rd gear / direct drive hold?) to encourage a better departure out of a corner or to start running after/away from an opponent suddenly after cruising along at low speed.

By the way, I think there was a mention at some point of the sim update rate affecting the physics / car performance? I've definitely experienced that when mucking about modding things and running in battery mode on the laptop or otherwise with setups that are somewhat below 60fps. It particularly seems to affect the drivetrains of all things (and there was notably various players including yourself having trouble with gearshifts, stalling, misbehaving automatics etc here). Seems like the simulation speed for that isn't the full 1000 ticks per second of the main physics sim (which itself probably crumbles a bit under particularly high load), and maybe more like a multiple (or fraction?) of the graphics framerate. If you really want to see some weird feedback-loop fragile-algorithm gore, pick something with a CVT and engineer things so you have a sub-30fps framerate (or it might even have been sub-40 ... I think that may be the underlying reason why I tend to cap mine at 48, with a 240hz internal panel, to reduce how much my legs get cooked?). Watch how it now has a bit of trouble figuring out the simple task of accelerating past the point where the drive ratio starts to vary, and basically can't get past the speed where that stops and the revs start rising again unless you drop it off a cliff (not sure where the excess power goes... probably to the same place where it seems to come out of nowhere if you have a broken bit of powertrain Jbeam or a really mangled wheel after a crash and suddenly the speedo readout just keeps getting higher and higher even with the engine off). Might not be that easy with e.g. the default CVT Sunburst, but if you have something a bit lower powered with a suitably short final drive (I was experimenting with modding some kind of Automation microcar when it first cropped up I think, and specifically wanted it to rev out a bit at speed in exchange for better hill starts) then it doesn't take too long to show up. The odd thing about it is that you can then see how it actually is somewhat tied to rendering speed - if you drop the sim speed to 1/2 of realtime, or maybe 1/4 in extreme cases, the problem suddenly fixes itself. The relationship between sim ticks and framerate is altered for one thing, but also having to only simulate 500 or 250 steps per second frees up more time for other processing, so the realworld framerate goes up a little, and the feedback loop where it ends up bouncing off some weird artefact rev limiter due to the ratio and rpm change steps being too large and too infrequent is broken. I found myself kind of working around the issue by just momentarily dropping into slow-mo at the point where it started to play up, letting it accelerate just about to the point where it was at the longest ratio, and resuming realtime play. I wouldn't want to say for certain that the same kind of thing also affects automatic gearbox shift decisions and possibly how the clutch and gearstick movement (or simulated synchromesh?) works, but it wouldn't be at all surprising, especially given past comments passed by self proclaimed beam internals devs who have popped up here regarding the somewhat strange way in which the gearbox, clutch, and engine torque/speed/shift/engagement logic interact and influence each other (and was given as the reason why, for example, you can't put a torque converter on a manual or a clutch on an auto-style epicyclic, even though citeable mass market examples of both exist... ...and why, I guess, the centrifugal clutch model in the Wydra is so dodgy, there's no option for that plus CVT (thus Wydra being single-speed... plus range?!) despite it being how almost all scooters and automatic quads work, and you can't make proper truck gearboxes with multiple chained manual transmissions or three-speed transfer cases, real world overdrives for autos, automatics that shift in and out of tiptronic mode gracefully or even have 3rd gear hold or winter modes, 4WD systems that only do 2H and 4L and nothing else... etc. It kinda needs a ground-up overhaul. Maybe a miracle will happen and we'll get that in 0.30, along with a meaningful solution to the spiking issue, e.g. beams that stretch more than a certain elasticisicisity-coefficient amount vs their original size will just snap / disappear and those squashed too far will buckle halfway or something. Oh and inheritance of the "hold both shift buttons to drop into neutral" shortcut from RoR?)

and then everyone would bitch about how it looks like an N64 game... though there's a few things that could be tried. Plus there's a very lightweight graphics tweak mod that lets you change things not normally accessible that can have a decent effect either making the game look even better, or improving performance. Like the shadow quality can be turned down without actually having to turn them off, which isn't normally an option, or the vegetation density thinned out. However I would expect what's really needed is simpler physics (not currently an option), or just less complicated vehicles so they don't have as many physics nodes to calculate. Maybe use full electrics with no regen to make the drivetrain very simple too. Wouldn't be surprised if a performance graph showed Alex's GPU was cruising with a decent idle-time percentage for most of the game here. Having more cars *on screen* didn't seem to influence the FPS much, but the complexity of what was being driven did even if none of them were visible. That doesn't scream "graphics bottleneck" to me.

Ah, I think that bit was explained by Olrosse in Amy's perspective of this (which had the crew voicechat) - the mod actually checks for collision at the client end for BOTH vehicles involved, and only registers an infection if they agree that there was contact. If *either* one says that there wasn't, then it doesn't count. It's the fairest way really, and avoids the more annoying risk of glitchy false infections. And is also kinda clever, I bet that's not a common thing.

it's got a good coastal village area to play in perhaps? Italy isn't even that big a map by recent standards anyway. Like there's combination mod-maps that have it alongside three or four others, and it's clearly not even that massive compared to them. Besides, it's chunked and LODed like anything else. Having that big mountain in the middle means sightlines generally aren't that far.

Neilogical, Camodo, and Laddo played it last week on West Coast. Italy has always been a bit more demanding from pc's than any other map.

Jeez all the moaning about the FPS... Don't think you went below 20~24 for most of this, so it'd only really count as "cinematic" (though ofc if you're watching a 30fps version of the vid that'd have a bit of a worse mismatch vs 60). Only the last round with the Bolides got properly choppy and a bit hard to follow at occasional moments, but I've still seen much worse particularly in my own play of various games. Otherwise it just sort of added to the sense of speed when flying along the boulevard at 100mph... the one thing that may have helped there though is turning on the motion blur and cranking up the strength? (After all, if the players can deal with it whilst actually in the middle of a game like this, you can deal with watching it, right? Unless you have some kind of significant flicker sensitivity I suppose, but then a whole lot of different things would cause the same problem and it shouldn't be unfamiliar?) Like you can definitely see the division between those of us who lived through the PSX era and earlier and those who didn't, can't you. Maybe time to stream some original Destruction Derby (you could use an emulator, and even crank up the render resolution ... but leave the framerate alone), Driver, GTA 3, Gran Turismo 2, NFS II, Starfox even? Descent on a 486? Especially after dipping into the 90s feels with Xenonauts.

BTW I'm not sure the graphics are entirely the reason for the lagginess, especially as it didn't seem to matter so much how many of the cars were visible on screen. It's a part of the performance equation, but Beam has a lot of range in terms of graphical demand (I can still make it playable on my CPU's internal graphics alone, with the 3060M turned off... it doesn't look pretty but it runs at an OK speed, and the built in GPU is extremely crap even vs machines that don't have a discrete chip at all because it's only really meant for doing OS and web browser level rendering... and it runs just fine with 10 AI cars on the middling-power discrete chip), plus there's an additional settings mod that can be used both to kill the stupid LOD bias thing on good GPUs, and to tweak a few extra settings to make it run a little better on potato systems. It's probably as much to do with the CPU (depending how much Beam actually offloads physics calcs to the GPU?), and your connection speed and ping. The amount of calculations it has to do for each vehicle is quite a lot, and in order to keep sync between players it'll have to pass the details of that back and forth between each computer (or into the server individually and then receive what it broadcasts back out) continually, and you can't really start your *own* processing for what's going on in terms of your own vehicle, and moreover its interactions with the others, until that's all been exchanged. Probably why the Stambecco is deadly for MP even though it's fairly simple on the graphical front ... it has a lot of wacky stuff going on physics-wise. I have an 8-core which helps massively with that side of things, but I wouldn't want to bet on having any kind of MP performance because my internet is crap, especially on the latency and upload side. You could have players with 4000 series GPUs but still bad framerate as they only have a quad core (or worse?) processor or a low clock rate, small cache etc... or just Bumpy-level internet. And someone still rocking a 1060 or equivalent but having a good time because they have a decent CPU and silky smooth full fibre... though I wager that the slower players might also drag down the framerate of the entire session as everyone else's machine ends up waiting for them, then having them visibly lag after a certain timeout. It'd be interesting to see a comparison of your specs with Amy's, for example, as her perspective of this session was so much smoother (like particularly for the Bolides, but you could "feel" it even where you were up at 30+ because she was holding a solid 60 there...), and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that may turn out to be host advantage due to the server being hosted on her machine. Possibly half the average net communication lag of anyone else, as it only needs to wait for all the incoming data, not for it to be sent back out as well...

Anyway, besides all that, this was good fun to watch and looks like it must be an absolute blast to play. It's something like Pacman but with cars (not sure if you could make THAT work on a literal level?). Or just a weird variant of tag :D Also did you and Neil's lot deliberately organise what rounds you did in each other's instance of showing the mod off (maybe mediated by both Laddo and Olrosse)? I don't think there was any overlap other than a couple people having (ludicrously upgraded) Lansdales in their open-choice final. Seems there were kind of obvious car choices that were otherwise avoided for each "level", on each side. And both groups were on somewhat more heavyweight maps. Maybe you could roll with Pigeons, Vivace rally cars, drift Sunbursts, and oddly Rigs-of-Rods-vibey drag buses for the next one? ;-) I mean you can't do just one. Or the Lego cars... Perhaps planes even, or the jetskis? (Wydras, Fligeons, monster trucks, big rigs?) And I think someone mentioned downhill survive the infection / flood the outbreak as obvious crossovers...

i think that u need to cut more of the video to make it shorter and more watchable and enjoyable the video idea is greet but you dont have to make so long and boring so make more shorter video about this video idea to make it get more $$$$$ and cut the boring rounds to make vid better :()

nah, that's Neilogical's schtick. Each to their own. Some of us like the longer form content (as well) and don't have a tiktok attention span. Besides, longer videos are better earners, it's the viewer watch time that counts (...at least for anything longer than 8 minutes). Like some people just watch the football highlights, others want to see the entire game.
