Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. Local public libraries are great places to hang out during the extreme heat of a day. We took our granddaughter, who is eight months old, in her stroller to one last week because we were waiting on someone and did not have a local home to be in. It was wonderful. They even had rocking chairs in the children’s department and we put her to sleep and then put her back in her stroller and we read books until the heat passed.

Yes! I second this. Libraries are a great place to get out of the heat and have some quiet moments. We love visiting libraries when we’re on the road somewhere.

Yes, public libraries are a great place to get out of the heat AND when traveling. Most are relaxing places to be and also have (usually) clean public bathrooms to use too before hitting the road.

Absolutely love libraries! They're great for reasons already mentioned and they have wonderful resources! There's free rentable movies/tv shows if you'll be there for a while, they have events that go on for kids and adults (including tax assistants 🥳) and sometimes cool things like 3D printers to make things with!

I just thought of a couple other great things about libraries too. 1) If you are traveling and still like to read physical books, many libraries have a section where you can get either free books to keep (usually retired library books) or where you can buy books for cheap (where the money goes to support the library). And if you're done with a book you're reading you can usually just donate it to that library too. 2) You can often get bus schedules for the area if you want to utilize local public transport. 3) The librarians can also be helpful with info on what to do in the area.

The Pacific Northwest has, by far, the most pleasant summer weather in the U.S. Rarely hot and reliably dry. To top it off, our scenery is outstanding, too. You need to see the North Cascades and the Olympic Coast.

The Pacific Northwest Coast is the place to be in the summer, from the very northern coast of California, up through Oregon and Washington to the Puget Sound. Beautiful, and generally cooler.

If you haven’t made your way to the Pacific Northwest yet, it’s almost always glorious weather in summer! Seattle area is full of outdoor beauty that is absolutely breathtaking and rarely gets hot (although, as seems to be the case everywhere, random hot days are showing up more often but still much less than other parts of the US! ) I hope the rest of your travels continue to be safe and full of less hot adventures!

Yes! Even our heatwaves aren’t that hot, but usually if the rest of the country is broiling we’re the little cool spot in the northwest corner. Emma and Alex, if you do decide to come out this way let me know! I live near Olympic National Park and can point you to some great sites around the peninsula.

I concur; you can always find relief from the heat in the pacific nw. If its too warm in the Puget Sound area, head east to the Cascades; too warm in the Cascades? Head to the North Cascades! We have about 10 different micro-climates available...

Alex, tell us more about the Al Green Concert. You seemed to say it was bad and it finished early? What was all that about? How the hell did you get back to the campsite? As far as the hottest temperature I ever experienced, that was in Melbourne Australia in 2009 where it reached 46.7 Celsius. I walked into the city centre that day and it was like being blasted with hot air from the oven. The dust stuck to the sun cream I had slathered over my pasty white English skin. I returned to the Hotel looking like I had been mud wrestling.

By his own admission he's not a big fan of music concerts, which is a shame. I'd like to have heard Sha La La 'cos that song (Makes Me Happy) and as parent-heses should know that!..... When Al Green played Glastonbury, he came on stage to acknowledge the audience by shouting "Hello London!" That won't mean much to an American, but there's a distance of 134 miles between the two places! Around 9/11 when Charlotte Church played the White House as a child, George Dubya asked her where she lived and she told him Wales. His reply was "Whereabouts in London is that?"! No wonder he invaded Iraq instead of Afghanistan !!

Would love to tell you that Vermont is one of the best places to go to beat the heat, yet on July 11 we had the worst flood in almost 100 years. But please come when you can because the merchants need the visitors. Montpelier was the hardest hit and Barre (where we live) also got hit hard. Vermonters are very New England-like. As soon as the rain stopped the clean up began with very little complaint. We love your videos. Noah seems like such a good baby. You both have a great attitude. Take care.

Love you guys and glad you are visiting Colorado, where I live. BUT temperatures in the 90s in the summer aren’t abnormal. This year has actually been a cool, VERY wet year so far. Denver averages 45 days a year over 90. So far this year we have only had 13. And afternoon thunderstorms are very, very normal for the summer. When hiking, do it in the morning so you are down out of the mountains before the thunderstorms come so you aren’t stuck 3-4 miles up the trail when the storm hits.

The heat is greatly dependent on where you are in the country. I'm in Montana and this is the coolest summer that I can remember. Two weeks of 80's after months of off/on rain and now we're headed back into the 60's and 70's with more chances of rain. Yes please!

Duluth Minnesota is called the air conditioned city, it is on Lake Superior and has amazing views and can be sometimes 30 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than just 15 or 20 miles away. The breeze off the lake cools the city down considerably.

Summer is hard for rv travel in the US. What we did (we were fulltime with our boys for almost 8 years) was go North or go up in elevation. Maine, Washington, Oregon and Northern CA are great in the summer. And then for Winter you’ll head south…FL, NM and AZ we’re our favorite places to visit. Utah hit ona shoulder season. NV is definitely a late fall thing. Hope this helps!

Western Washington state is usually cooler during summers than most other states. We have been in the mid 70’s in case you want to visit during a summer. It’s a rough year for the world with the heat this summer. We feel blessed it’s been cool.

Hi, I think this may be my first time posting on a KZfaq Channel (bit of a luddite); but I had several responses/info I wanted to share after your latest video. My wife and I have been watching you for about the past year and a half. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures. They have been a wonderful escape in the evenings. We dream of van life after we've gotten the kids through college, and your dreams of property in Portugal feel similar to our desire to build a cabin in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Since we usually watch on our TV, I didn't know how to subscribe; but since I actually wanted to respond to your latest video, I headed over to my PC after watching. So, a few things. 1) You asked about where to head in the US during the summer (particularly to escape the heat you recently experienced). I LOVE the two northern corners in the summer, Washington (particularly the Olympic peninsula) and the Maine coast. 2) You mentioned you might be coming back during Halloween/Thanksgiving. Might I recommend New England during that time frame? The foliage (early October) is often, depending on weather, some of the best around. Salem, Massachusetts is well known for their Halloween celebration, and Plymouth Massachusetts is the "home" of American Thanksgiving (highly recommend Plymouth Plantation). 3) Watching your latest video tonight, my wife and I were suddenly struck by the fact you are right around the corner from our daughter who just flew out to Colorado for the 3rd, annual National Children's Chorus (NCC) Opera Camp. The NCC just finished a tour of the UK where they performed in Edinburgh, Cardiff (with Pendyrus), London (with Voces8), and recorded a holiday album at Abbey Road Studio. I don't know if you are into opera, but the free, final performance of "The Tinker of Tivoli" by the students at the camp (ages 10-18) will be on August 10th in Vail, CO. You should make a drive to Alaska. It is a beautiful drive especially in the summer and it doesn’t get too hot up here. I think the highest we’ve gotten this year was 70 but that’s it so far.

Congratulations guys. A baby in a heatwave is not fun! I live in Melbourne, so we are not strangers to 40 degrees. I remember my last one was 4 -5 months old during a heatwave and it was horrendous, and we were in a house with the AC on 24/7! That photo is absolutely the cutest thing I have seen for a bit. The Oregon coast has been wonderful this year! We have only had a few days of blistering heat in the Willamette Valley, too. But we have tons of trees to seek shade!

If you’re willing to head to the PNW, anywhere on the coast is pretty great, the redwoods in northern CA and Olympic National Park. But for your immediate needs, I would recommend Breckenridge.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you're pretty level each time you park for the night. It's essential for your RV fridge, so that all the fluids can circulate properly and not back up in the system... I don't want to scare you (especially in light of your horrific previous experience), but operating the fridge off level can in the worst case scenario cause a fire, particularly in older RV fridges. More than 3 degrees side to side (front to back of the RV, because the fridge is mounted sideways) is not a good idea...

The North woods of Wisconsin are really pleasant right now. The really vicious mosquitoes of Spring have tapered off. Lots of lakes and rivers to play in. But tucked into the woods you have to keep a close eye on the weather apps to be sure you're not caught in any of the unexpected Thunderstorms that can come through fast and furious. We had a tornado watch last week but you can actually sleep under blankets at night. It's my absolute dream after too many years suffering through the heat in the Mojave desert summers.

I LOVE WI! I've been to Baraboo a number of times for Leopold Education Project conferences. I love the Leopold Shack, the WI River, the Crane Foundation, and the Prairie restoration going on around Baraboo. I'd like to do more camping in your fine state!

I’m from the Midwest, spent a summer in my van in the Pacific Northwest and would do it again EVERY SUMMER if I could. It is perfect along the coast! And as you drive south toward/Oregon it is generally sunshinier than northern Washington, in the rainforest. I recommend the Oregon coast!

Hi Emma, Alex and Noah Get a gel cooling mat or two to lay Noah on if he gets too warm. You can cool them in the fridge or in a stream. A Cotten sheet I’m between will cool quicker than air con if you get back and he is too warm. Hope you continue having wonderful adventures in the US.

I love your positive attitudes through whatever challenges you are facing! For off grid camping in the heat, ihighly recommend a rechargeable fan. I use ryobi fans when I car camp and they run all night without dying and can be recharged while I am driving. Having the air flow during high temps helps a lot.

Brings back memories of camping with our son in 40+ weather. Like you did, we found the secret was to take scenic drives during the hottest part of the day and to get up early to enjoy outdoors before the heat. We also bought reflectix to insulate windows, draped a cover over the windshield (on the outside)and attached tarps to shade the hottest side of the vehicle/create a place to sit outdoors. Also get small battery powered fans to move air when not hooked up. Also, go to public air conditioned spaces like community centres, museums, art galleries, and malls for a break.

Stay up North during summer! The high elevation of Colorado and Montana are why it gets cool at night, that definitely doesn't happen everywhere!

Meanwhile, in Britain, we've been suffering in a stifling 19 degree heatwave, with the temperature occasionally creeping well over 21 degrees, only moderated by the regular rain showers every day or so. If it weren't for frequent visits to the pub to down a warm pint of bitter, I don't know how we would cope.

Sounds like the leaks are from old seals around the van. If you don't want to reseal yourself, you could reach out to RV dealerships and see if they have maintenance shops that will do it for you. After any length of time, the materials used to seal around windows, fans, ac units, etc. disintegrate. Just part of maintaining an older rig.

It's been pretty hot across the entire country in July. August is starting off very plesant in Upstate New York. The Adirondack Park, especially around Lake George, is several degrees cooler than the rest of our state. Plus, it is beautiful, and next summer trip, Noah will be a toddler. There are lots of things to entertain a young child around Lake George. The Great Escape is a Six Flags amusement park that has many small child focused things. Even the water park has a large splash pad and a lazy river. Nearby, there is a refreshing self powered railroad trip. The cars are open air and use pedal power. It's a decent workout, but it's definitely something you can handle, and the scenery is spectacular. It does require reservations and it sells out each day.

I love the Adirondacks! My son lived there for a while, and I visted and hiked many times. Being from MI prairie, I felt the elevation and had to get sturdier boots for the rocks, but I love the forest trails, rivers, and lakes. I'd love to go back for more camping/hiking/kayaking. NY outdoor writer/woodswoman, Anna LaBastille, is an all-time fave. Finger Lakes are another fave NY spot!

I too was going to suggest upstate NY...and visiting (swimming) lakes as much as possible....Lake George, the various Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario, Thousand Islands, Adirondacks, Mirror Lake, a lovely lake northeast of Albany (can't remember it's name but was one of my favorite places to swim)...or the coast of Maine or Cape Cod (though that gets a bit crowded)....ocean swimming...I grew up in South Jersey and spent most weekends at one of the local lakes or the Jersey Shore...if one can't be in the AC in the summer, next coolest place is in the water.

Coming from someone from the Peak District, I recommend the pacific coast mid to northern california up to washington, highway 1, it beautiful and the ocean keeps the shore cooler. Western Washington State is very nice in summer.

To escape the worst of the heat go to the places that have elevations of 7000 ft and above - there are tons of cute towns in Colorado at 7000 and above. Any elevations lower than 7000 you will feel the heat. Keep in mind in the Mountains in the summer there will always be afternoon thunderstorms. Vail, Breckinridge, Aspen, etc. are just a few of the incredibly beautiful Colorado towns above 7000 ft.

Anywhere along the West Coast is great in the summer! The humidity is low, and the nights cool off so you can open your windows and let in the breeze. I bet you would enjoy a place like Northern Washington state (also you can go whale watching and see orca whales). If you need any recommendations up there, let me know. Port Townsend, Forks, Sequim, Anacortes, Bellingham, or any other place in that region are all great! Even the Bavarian town of Leavenworth in the Cascade Mountains would be a fun stop. :)

Hope you are enjoying Colorado! Heading up to the lakes in the mountains is a great way to stay cool during Colorado's hot summers. Not sure if you've moved on from Colorado yet, but if Santa Fe is in your travel plans, its 5 hours drive from Denver and is a beautiful place to visit for a few days. Safe travels!

Wonderful camping in NM around the Santa Fe area. Check out the Pecos, NM. It’s not nearly as hot here. Look for tererro nm for something truly different. Rather chilly in the evenings but the days are wonderful and the trout are biting! About 5 hours from you.

I'm up in the PNW and our summer has been pretty cool so far. Highs in the mid 80s 😁I grew up in Mesa, AZ 25 years of 117° days in peak summer but the absolute worst part is that at midnight it's still 100° MISERABLE LOL That's why I moved north❤ Plenty to do and explore up here too!

I use to live in Colorado Springs in the 1970s. I went to Colorado Technical College in Manitou Springs and got an associates degree in biomedical engineering technology. My wife, our newborn and I would ride our bikes through the Garden of the Gods. Boy, did this ever bring back memories.

Sending BIG LOVE! Tips from an outdoor educator in Michigan: Camp in the northern half of the US in summer/early fall; southern half in winter/spring. Even in MI, the summertime practice is to go Up North for cooler weather. Camp near water. For hot days: Plan early a.m. activity; sleep during heat; do early evening activity. Avoid alcohol. Keep lots of refrigerated fruit on hand for snacking; keep a spray bottle of water on hand when out in sun for a quick, cooling spritz. Dip bandana in water and wear around neck/on head. Get black-out shades for the van and a tarp to cover for future leaks. Educate yourselves about tornado watch/warning protocol. Always wear sun hats. long sleeves, light colors, loose fabric, and sun cream. Educate yourselves about Ticks and Lyme disease. Do tick checks after outdoor activities & before bed. Never enter fast-flowing water without learning conditions from a well-informed source. If you don't have a campsite reservation but have friends nearby, most people would welcome you to come by, plug in to their house/garage, and enjoy a visit. AL: LISTEN TO EMMA! 🙂Emma: Listen to your Mama Mind. My son and his partner hiked 700 miles of the Appalachian Trail this summer, until heat and wildfire smoke became an issue. Now they're back in MI and working on a veg farm that has an incredible local food and music festival called Hollerfest. Local treasures in a vacation paradise with lakes and state parks every few miles. Beans are welcome at my place in MI! Stay safe out there! Rock on!

That photo is hilarious! Love it! Glad you're able to manage in the heat. Recommendations? The Northern California coast (San Francisco and north) as well as around Lake Tahoe. We were wearing winter coats in August when camping which was glorious (we live in a city that is regularly 95+ all summer but wr all have AC). The Redwoods State and National Park is magical. Happy to make more suggestions if needed!

I hope you continue to find safe, cool places. The heat is really scary. One very cool spot is Santa Cruz, California. It has its own microclimate and is even chilly at times in summer. Lots of wind off the ocean.

The summer I graduated college, my parents took my younger brother and me on a 4-week roundtrip cross-country trip in our 27 ft. trailer towed by a monster of an Oldsmobile station wagon (wait for it: in "National Lampoon Vacation" neon green with wood panelling). One of our stops was the Garden of the Gods where we rode on horseback through those stunning rocks and canyons.

I live in Weslaco, TX. I live 8 miles from the Mexican border. It's hot here. We have been hitting 100 degrees for 87 days straight, and there is more heat coming this way. I'm staying indoors and watching your videos. I can't wait for the next one.

Catching up with the channel and absolutely gutted that I missed your visit to our wonderful Colorado Springs by just a couple of months. To answer your question, to stay cool in the US in the summer, go to higher altitudes. Consider Woodland Park or Divide, which is a good 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit cooler. Or, as we did when we were in Texas - live inside in the AC all day - as it would remain in the upper 90s F until 9-10pm at night. That's why we moved to Colorado :)

So glad you’ve enjoyed our great state of Colorado! But I’m not a huge fan of heat either, so some avoid the heat suggestions. Obviously, all bets are off with climate change making things weird, but altitude and latitude are your friends. The Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, British Columbia) are reliably cool, as long as you stay within shouting distance of the ocean (but the eastern parts of these states/provinces can easily get over 40°C). Similarly, as I’m guessing you’ve already discovered in Colorado, it’s rarely over 30°C when you get over 2500m.

You should try the New England states for the summer sometime. It’s usually on the cooler side in the summer. It seems like all the van travelers go out west, and it’s certainly understandable because there’s much more open land out there. But you guys aren’t really off-grid campers, and there are plenty of campgrounds in the northeast. You do need to book, though. Not a lot of places where you can just pull over and spend the night on the east coast. We get temperatures over 100 in the summer on a regular basis in New Jersey, and it’s not even one of the hottest places in the US. When we got married in July, 30 years ago, it was 95. But it had been 105 for the whole week before that, so it actually felt pretty good.
