There are few concepts as frightening as a narcissist. Someone who can pretend to care about you while all the while only thinking of their own interests. And in Dostoevsky's The Meek One, he explores this concept in great detail, crafting a portrait that is equal parts terrifying and pitiable, outlining both the deep tragedy and terrible contemptibility of the narcissistic worldview.

Have you read The Demons by Dovstoievski? I met a Russian who thought it was his Master piece. I can't choose my favourite book by Dovstoievski. I guess I find them all great. If you are interested about narcissistic mothers you can search for the live of Irene Nemirovski, another writer who died too young. She wrote about her mother, Fanny, in Jezabel and The Dance but have other interesting ideas about the human psyche. Thanks. Her best book remained unfinished; The Suite Francoise about the day Parisians had to leave París due to the natzis.

I too encountered a perfect narcissist and i am surprised how similiar the pawnbroker is to him. That he genuinely believes he's the good person, and the victim, while being the cause of his own suffering , is so insanely accurate.

They are delusional and have to convince themselves they are perfect because facing the odious reality is as grotesque for the narcissist as it is for us. It only becomes worse for them as they age. Everything the are, do and say is a lie. Brain scans are identical to psychopaths.

Robert Green too points out, in the laws of human nature, that narcissism isn't born out of ego, but rather out of a lack of it. In his view, the gap in their self image that needs to be filled is what makes them seek validation from the outside, while normal people get that same validation from inside them, from their self image or ego.

NOT ALWAYS. NARCISSISTS OFTEN BLACKMAIL & THREATEN ( EG. TO DESTROY SOMETHING OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE IF YOU LEAVE, AND MOST MURDERS BY PARTNERS OCCUR AFTER THEY HAVE LEFT THEIR ABUSERS, THIS IS A TRAGIC FACT. THEYRE NOT KIDDING WHEN THEY THREATEN AND BLACKMAIL, WHAT THEYLL DO IF YOU LEAVE THEM. ALSO NECESSARY SUPPORT TO LEAVE SUCH ABUSERS, IS MOSTLY NOT AVAILABLE TO THEM. TRAGIC FACT.

A narcissist's love (strictly confidential for themselves) is the lvl of projections they can inflict on their partners, they get frustrated when they see that actual person their partner is. Loving someone requires not only learning but the you already instinctively recognizing the valuable otherness of others, narcissists couldn't care less, if/when they do it bothers them to no end (empathy is like a personal attack)

What a gorgeous analysis. I was in a relationship much like during some earlier years of my life and as much as it’s disorienting watching someone you thought was being genuinely kind turn into someone you despise and fear- it is equally horrifying to watch yourself deteriorate in order to make things work. It becomes incredibly easy to deem yourself the “fixer” and try to find where things went wrong and constantly fight to get back to a more pleasant time when the person (like the pawnbroker) originally showed you kindness and care until you inevitably run out of patience and empathy for the “pawnbroker”.

A long story, but this character reminds me of a friend I once had. She always complained how she had been wronged her own life, then wronged others, and wondered why they left her. After telling her I didn’t want to work with her any longer on a project we had been doing for 3 years (because she simply couldn’t cooperate and would leave me to do everything) she cut all contact with me. I found out from another friend that she had “had enough” with me.

@@raniagozai I finished Crime and Punishment maybe a year and a half ago. What an amazing journey. It was perfect for where I was in my life. Same with The Idiot. I read that about 14 years ago, my second work of his after Demons. I should reread both of them but I want to read the other major novellas, short stories and The Adolescent first. I read Brothers Karamazov right after C&P and it has easily become my favorite novel ever without any contender. If you ever plan to read it I highly recommend Dream of a Ridiculous Man first.

@@ElonMuskrat-my8jy I'm a bit new to Dostoevsky's work, so I haven't been sure on where to start. This comment is really useful to me since I was planning to read The Brothers Karamazov, but I might read Dream of a Ridiculous Man before it. Also hoping to read some of his other short stories and novellas before I read Dream of a Ridiculous Man, probably The Meek One and Notes From the Underground first.

When you’re in a similar situation the information on the subject it’s jumping at you from everywhere… but not before that! I was discarded one month ago by my covert narcissist husband. It’s quite a ride but I’ll manage! I just placed an order for this book. It will be my first Dostoyevsky read because I was Team Tolstoy - I refused to read Dostoyevsky because I loved my Tolstoy… I’ll guess now that I begin a new life, Dostoyevsky for a new chapter in a new life…

Excellent work! I think a lot of men want women because they think that love will them fix them. Stop all their pain. But they end up despising the women for loving the man they are disgusted, by. Themselves.

Things aren't logical sometimes and sometimes, you don't have the necessary clues to decide between left and right. You only know the right was wrong in hindsight. I used to be in a relationship where it started with her adoring me. It was fun to laugh with a person who was engaged and attentive. As time went on, fondness grew. (I feel like it's the most accurate description looking back. I don't want to accredit that time to insecurity.) The more I fell in love, the more I was infatuated. I told myself "If you truly love her, you should text her right away. Be as responsive as possible." Yes, I was romantic and the typical textbook definition of "good" to her, but my perception was off. I was a good companion and a friend, but not a good lover. I thought love was supposed to be two best friends who had feelings for each other, but it wasn't. I will take the blame for what I believed to be true, but it is the case that everyone is flawed. I wanted to treat her right, but that wasn't the correct choice for her. Was it completely my fault? Is it my fault for holding her responsible for her faults as an equal? Am I narcissist?

I read it on a volume that contained another narrative, I'm not sure what the English title for it is but it's about a dream a miserable man has after deciding to kill himself. I focused more on the latter, but now I realise how genius it is, Dostoevsky truly is a brilliant author and this video proves it. Good work!

@@ElonMuskrat-my8jy Actually Nihilism aligns opposite to my thinking. Although I am only aware of the little things about its crust. But you recommended a different author other than Nietzsche, is it because it is too much for a beginner to start with his writings? Physical books are my preference but pdfs are the best alternative, so I am okay with it. Thank you though, hope to see in new comments.

@@MR_NOBODY61 Well that's good news because the book is an analysis of it and written from an anti-nihilist pov. It's subtitle is The Root of the Revolution of the Modern Age. He was a priestmonk who was previously an atheist and a highly educated scholar. In the book he lists four stages of the nihilist dialectic and how although they are reactions to each other, they are not contradictory. He starts with Liberalism during the Enlightenment and works to the current stage we are in, one of destruction. His social and spiritual analysis of our age is very sharp and prescient. It was written in the 60s but very applicable to today. About the book being hard to find. It is currently out of print from the publisher but there are copies available at various distributors. Jordanville currently has 11 copies at $9 each. If you're interested just look up Holy Trinity Church Supplies & Bookstore.
