Yeah I saw this movie in the theaters when it was released. Really underrated gem.

It helps that the background was real (instead of green screen) and they heavily used real practical effects intead of relying solely on CGI. Some of the closeup shots of the bugs were done with real life models and animatronics. Jurassic Park also used a combination of CGI + real models/animatronics (IIRC, they made animatronic models of Velociraptors and most of the T-Rex).

Also why the first Star Wars movies aged so well. A mix of animatronics with cgi only for wide shots or space shots. Lots of miniatures too!

They played to the strengths of early CGI. Movies around that time with bad CGI didn’t, making common mistakes like using it in dimly lit scenes and having glossy reflections.

@@shaskusmasso I watched it again, and this might shock you: where Rico’s gun is pointed and where that blood splattered appeared *do not line up!* That said, your point does stand. At best, Rico shot him in the right lung and at worst the liver. So you’re right, the LT probably didn’t have kind thoughts about Rico in his last moments down that bug’s gullet

But in the beginning of the movie we see someone from MI missing both his legs, and the LT didn't get a mechanical arm until he was back in action, so I'm guessing he just didn't want to go through the rest of his life missing the majority of his limbs. There is also the possibility that the femoral arties pulled back too far to tournequit or possibly even clamp since the amputations occurred very close to the waist.

There was just so many bugs. The warrior bugs were even using dead bugs as ladders and stepping stones. They didn't have enough firepower and the right kind of firepower.

They have energy weapons in the extended lore but they were expensive and not as reliable as the Morita Smart Rifles. Keep in mind in the books and other media the troopers are supposed to have visors to assist in targeting but they were dumped for the movies because the actor' s breathing kept on fogging them up the screen.
