The Roaring Forties - The Roaring Forties are strong westerly winds found in the Southern Hemisphere, generally between the latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees.[1] The strong west-to-east air currents are caused by the combination of air being displaced from the Equator towards the South Pole, the Earth's rotation, and the scarcity of landmasses to serve as windbreaks. en.wikipedia.o...
Hove to - a way of slowing a sailboat's forward progress, as well as fixing the helm and sail positions so that the boat does not actively have to be steered. en.wikipedia.o...
Shoal - In oceanography, geomorphology, and earth sciences, a shoal is a natural submerged ridge, bank, or bar that consists of, or is covered by, sand or other unconsolidated material, and rises from the bed of a body of water to near the surface. en.wikipedia.o...

John is a good man. He towed my Toyota Carona out of bog on NZ’s South islands West Coast when I got bogged earlier this year (2022). I missed the entrance to a road siding and got stuck. I wasn’t in a good place mentally, and it was pouring with rain. John pulled over with his partner in their motor home. Even though his vehicle was only 2 wheel drive and unequipped for towing, he let me tie on some rachet straps and pulled me out with the tyres spinning. To top it off, him and his partner invited me in for tea in there motor home after to decompress. Thankyou John, you’re a legend.

I seen this movie years ago and I watched the Documentary. I’ve always found it interesting to hear peoples stories on how they survived. John has a book out we’ll probably a few but John likes to talk about John and there was some bickering among the men at sea if you was to read a book about this ordeal from John it would be mostly about him which takes up most of the book. I am interested in reading Jims book called capsized he gives a more detailed look at each one of the personalities and how they were each able to cope and deal. These men are all survivors and each contributed under stressful circumstances. I like to read a big where the survivor is more empathetic toward his crew mates.

Sailing, second only to music and the ability to create it, has been the biggest formative thing in my life - I learned to sail in the late 60’s, and to navigate in the late 70’s - long before any GPS or even radar was available for a small pleasure yacht. I went from an 11’ Moth, scow, to a 22’ French built wooden boat who’s makers name escapes me as I type this, then to a 24’ Abott, and finally a 44’ C&C (I’m a Canuck) and this is all prior to the 2000’s. Now I’m newly retired and I’m moving to British Columbia and buying a live aboard boat! Peace!

John Glennie called me in March or April of 2014 in Olympia Washington when I had a boat for sale(unbelievably good boat by the way. I lowered the price to about 50% of retail for a fast sale because I had to relocate to Kansas quickly). I thought the guy calling was a fraud at first, but quickly realized he was the real deal. However, he was mostly interested in telling me stories about his ordeal, rather than talking about the sailboat I had for sale. I got the impression that he expected me to be amazed by his ordeal and grovel at his feet or something. I shouldn't talk down to him, but I was just kinda put off by his demeanor and the fact that he called me about a boat I had for sale and then spent all of the allotted time talking about himself. He never asked a single question about the boat other than; "was it for sale?"

Wonderful. Last piece resonates with me . Powerful words ... mothers are ruining their boys by driving them around in cars all day and picking up after them .. hardly the making of adventures.. give up the normal conditioning and embrace living . We live on yachts to be free thinkers

I love being far out on the ocean on a giant ship, that's enough adventure for me so far. I've been across the roaring 40's from NZ to Sydney. The weather couldn't have been more beautiful. Adversity has come my way all through my life and probably more to come before I'm done so no I probably wouldn't choose to deliberately sail out into several storms in a craft like his just looking for trouble.

Its not that people don't want to experience adventure. Its that people get caught in the gears of progress finding themselves with a mortgage and bill's up the bum. If all of a sudden they packed up and left for an adventure, society would label you irresponsible take your home and place your kids in state custody leaving your credit rate to resemble that of a freeway speed limit. Then you would be living on the streets in a cardboard box. Where the adventure will really begin!

My wife & i was living on a 30 ft. try in Picton at the time & said to the Mrss the day he left " The guys crazy leaving with that southerly coming up the coast , I was doing deliveries around the NZ coast at the time & the golden rule is leave on the end of a Southerly as the wind backs to the west & you have an off shore wind up the Waiarapa coast ,Not a nice coast , No shelter & terrible winds even the westerlies 50+ Knots isn't unusual . I personally thought he was a bit up him self , Beautiful yacht , Pity .

Boaties are a special breed ask anyone who runs a Marina.Some are great and others think because the wind is free why cant everything be.The long time alone at sea can make them become very self centred.

I agree with I. Puma. It is quite haphazard try to outrun a storm. I have experienced a cumulonimbus making circles around me. But just in time I was already on a jetty. :-)

I love this guy, but as a fully fledged coward, and a pathetic useless, individual, with No survival insticts whatsoever, and with an active fear of the sea, which makes me tremble and quiver at the very thought of going out to sea in a ship, let alone, "a beautiful pea green boat", ! I will stick to my armchair, thanks. I will stay boring; I will cry; I will shake; and howl with terror when I die, instead. A Much better way to live, in my humble opinion. The sea is way to terrifying, with a plethora of to many horrors for a muggle of my ineptitude. Vicariousness is my way in that scenario, and I am proud of it. There are No excuses. I would be too scared to do what this man did. That is the pure, and the simple truth. What a great bloke, though, with Massive cahonas, he is. A true adventurer; a real maverick: a proper bohemian. An inspiring person with grit and with determination. I take my hat off to him: I applaud his courage; &, I walk in his shadow! 👍

@JC-21470

Escape hatches are quite common on big offshore cruising multi-hulls, particularly custom built boats.
@New.Adventures.Sailing
@New.Adventures.Sailing 5 жыл бұрын
Any modern cat has them now, I believe SOLAS requires them. Multi's are very stable inverted, especially if their rig survives. Bolt-cutters, hand saws, kites should be cabled to the boat so you can get out and go where you need to.
