I've been having a blast painting lately, the one thing you’ve said before that got me over that hurdle is “Be patient with yourself, forgive yourself and be grateful for new ideas.”
@angrymikko

That's awesome to hear. I've had so much work this year that every painting has felt like a small reward I get to enjoy between projects. It's funny how much of my time goes into listening how students feel exhausted with the amount of painting I give them as homework meanwhile here I am trying my absolute hardest to get a few minutes of painting done between commissions 🐻

I actually watch your videos because they soothe my drawing fears, especially perfection because you create the most lovely images out of seemingly blobs of color. Haha It takes the fear of failure out of the picture. Your process is easier for me to follow and personally much more enjoyable. PS: You're my top 3 favorite KZfaq artists
@angrymikko

I’ll take top 3 ☝️💕 blobs are easier to make look better than just empty canvas. I honestly love that moment when I don’t know what I’m doing. There’s a brief window when I get to just explore the different colour combinations with all kinds of random shapes. You never know what you find that way and with some brushes it’s just relaxing to get that feeling of spreading colour around.

@@angrymikko Sorry, I actually meant top 3 artists I follow on social media in general. One can never grow tired of looking at your beautiful artwork. It's crazy to think you have moments when you don't know what you're doing because it appears to be the exact opposite, haha. I agree, there's something freeing about spreading colors on a canvas.

I needed this video today, the timing was perfect so thank you! I've recently come to the realization that I need to make time to just create, free of critique and limitations. Social media can easily become performative, even for creatives, but it's important to not let it have control over our creativity! You're an amazing artist and huge inspiration Mikko, can't wait to see all that you do in the future!

I don't know who this doesn't appeal to but I needed to hear this today. I don't even post my work on social media yet because I'm too scared of it not being organised enough etc. But I'm working on a children's book and I just am working myself into the ground with it. Zero time off and when I do eventually give in I feel guilty for relaxing instead of getting more work done. So thank you for reminding me why I draw. Designing as a job makes you forget why you started if you're not careful and then it become like a mundane stressful office job. Loved your video and the human approach 💙

I think a lot of the social media advice that is focused on growing one’s online presence is a bit toxic in the way they push people to compromise everything for an audience. In art space personally I feel like this has its own harmful symptoms because art teaching is never going to be as sexy as some easy answers. If you respect your audience as people then it’s easier to make these decisions according to your values. It might not be a recipe for viral success but if you treat the people you’re talking to with compassion and genuine desire to help then they’ll treat you as a person too. When it comes to making art the best way to achieve this is to make “honest” art.
@peacegirl19
@peacegirl19 Жыл бұрын
@@angrymikko I totally agree. I constantly get sponsored posts on social media about how to grow an audience...and every single one is solely focused on creating content that will drive the best results, not creating content that is driven by one's own passion. I just watched Alpay Efe's latest video, and he talks about how KZfaq is driving the content creator to make videos that will get the most views and how that's changing the online art community. Very interesting watch if you haven't already seen it. Anyway, I really appreciate the art you put out into the world and the things you teach all of us. The community you've created (and are part of) is a special one. So, thank you :)

Kiitos Mikko! That's the video I needed. I'm stressing myself about social media a lot, that I have to do more to be really recognize. But I'm currently thinking about it and your video is helping me with this matter. I let myself be very unsettled and simply have to trust myself more when it comes to content. I know what my 5 points are, now I have to find a way to implement it for myself. I not only paint, I also write and it is my goal to combine this and make both visible in my content on instagram. Because when I write I can't paint and vice versa. I need to find a way to visualize both. So thanks again for your input and inspiration. The DTIYS Challenge sounds perfect for me, to generate a new way of thinking. Take Care! Warm greetings from Germany

The 5 categories method has lots of other benefits too that I didn’t have time for in this video. It can also work as brand identity builder for someone who is still searching for the right tone in their content. It also helps people know what to expect from the creator because the same themes repeat. Meanwhile it also allows enough flexibility for the creator that they don’t always have to be producing the single one thing that their entire business is built around.

That’s a great attitude. I like making videos that people watch but honestly I also just love making them full stop. Editing this one was so much fun. I’ve only done this for a few years so I learn new things with every video still. Not just editing but the sound editing has proven to be one of my favourite parts about putting a video together. I often feel like the things people end up liking are often the parts where I lost the track of time and just got obsessed with the process so there’s some synergy benefits in there 🐴

I've had to stop everything social media related for the past year because it was just too much and really didn't play well with my mental health. Been looking to return to some platforms and start posting my art again now that I'm in a better place, but having to create rules for myself this time. I am now loving my art and have noticed that doing so has GREATLY improved my ability to study/learn a new art topic! I have also FINALLY found the perfect drawing tablet for me and this has helped A LOT even if it broke my wallet lol (bought the wacom cintiq 27" pro). This combined with Clip Studio is so much fun! Please continue these videos and keep helping others WE are all GRATEFUL for your help/guidance!

Damn that is an expensive tablet. I hope having it motivates you to make lots of art :) When you allow yourself to love the things you’re making it’s much easier to make progress in the areas of art that are meant for you. A lot of people hate everything they make and never realise their hidden talents. When you lean into the easy it’s much faster to get to the kind of mastery only you can show us.

Mikko Rull and any similar textured brush is fun to build colour layers with. Even if the brush strokes are wrong they can give the final version a much more rich vibrant look as all those previous brush strokes peak through the little holes in the texture. It’s something anyone can do if you just paint over the mistakes instead of erasing them.

i'm a photographer and started learning to paint because i really struggle with letting myself make mistakes and having a different medium that isn't "my thing" helps massively. i got very inspired by a technique you talked about in an older video of making a painting without a sketch and just using colours and large brushes, so i've been doing that and not trying to make any finished paintings at all, it's just sketches of ideas. really appreciate your videos and the fact that you talk about these topics

I’m so thankful for your videos, your advice really helps me feel way better about my creativity and my approach to art in general. Working full time as a game artist kinda have been wearing me down and your videos do wonders to my self confidence, slowly trying to learn how to be forgiving with myself and never forget to take care of my mental health. I have been kinda stuck with my personal art for a long time, it’s so exhausting. Also, watching you paint is super therapeutic, your bears are adorable! And you always use my fav color pallets haha, thank you Mikko!
@angrymikko

I can understand that. Video game industry is brutal and they have no respect for the creative people working on those projects. I loved making games but I don’t think I’d ever want to do it full-time anymore. I’ve been making small game projects since my full time job and it seems the smaller the project the more I usually enjoy the process. The one advice I can give you is start digging an exit plan. Even if you don’t need it right now it’s good to have a plan B to fall back on if you ever happen to need it. I started my social media presence for that reason and when the day came that I needed it I was glad that I was able to hit the ground running. There’s nothing worse than feeling like you don’t have options. Make options.

I really needed this video. I’m 26 and graduated art school 3 years ago, but have been in such a depression since graduating that making a portfolio or even picking up a pencil to draw everyday has been tough. And it really doesn’t help that no matter how much or how little I post on social media, I never get past 100 or so followers. I feel invisible and like I’m not meant to be an artist.
@lexacharms

And trying to get to a point where I shouldn’t care how much or how little my traction is tough. Especially because to be able to be a full time artist or make any money from, your art at all, you need that traction.
