Serhiy Shvachko is an officer, who has served in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces since he was 17. In the summer of 2014, Shvachko was the communications chief for the 51st Separate Mechanized Brigade.
In August of that year, he was tasked with restoring Ukrainian control to Ilovaisk. Ukrainian soldiers had been storming the city on a daily basis since the start of the month and, on August 18, after the Donbas battalion’s arrival, Ukrainian units captured half of Ilovaisk territory, up to the train station.
The situation drastically changed on the night of August 23, when Russian troops arrived. On August 29, the military leaders took the decision to withdraw from Ilovaisk.
At that point, the 51st Brigade were stationed near Mnohopillya, south of Ilovaisk.
They were caught under fire as they were leaving and Shvachko was wounded. He was forced to surrender to the Russians, along with a dozen other soldiers.
Shvachko was handed back to the Ukrainian side the next day and was taken from the conflict zone to a hospital in Dnipro.

1:26 Is it American Franco in the background? RIP. The mini-encirclement operation was an offensive oversight leading to a total disaster. DPR reinforcements from Dyakove cauldron arrived from the south and southwest surrounding them creating another mini-encirclement. They were caught off-guard. Their rearguard located outside the cauldron has no mechanized (tanks and apc) units to support them which they demanded (as stated by Azos battallion in VICE Dispatch 76). The army went into disarray from heavy shelling (VICE news Dispatch 75). Unfortunately, they were all wipedout except for Azos battalion who fled and miraculously manage to exit the cauldron and retreated to Mariupol. After watching this, there is more to the story. They were tricked with the tags, they werent able to notice not until the locals said it. Aside being trapped, they slowly run out of ammuntion and their officers were dying. The most horryfying was when they were forced to retreat armed prompting the other side to annihilate them after they broke the agreement. After their capture, they found out their real enemy based on the food they were given, the accent, the uniforms, etc.

So this soldier group attacked, got encircled, no aid come, battered, running dry on munition, incur many wounded, then given corridor to retreat by enemy, and choose to retreat WITH their equipment in tow? Clearly the leadership prized their equipment more than their soldiers

It is a bit rich complaining about Russians fighting on the side of Donbass forces when today Ukraine openly encourages foreign fighters from Canada, UK and even New Zealand and Australia. Who has more local connection with the conflict? Besides, America has openly been supporting Ukraine central government militarily since 2014.

Another thing is that the Russians signed on saying that they wouldn’t use troops against Ukraine. When you have clear Russian formations in Ukraine and firing rockets at them, it aint abiding with the agreement.

It’s their country. If the Ukrainian government wants to invite/encourage foreign fighters into Ukraine they are perfectly entitled to do so. Russian soldiers were not invited and they have no right to be there. So no, it’s not “rich” at all.
