Thanks for sharing your story. I can 100% relate to yours. I also went to uni after completing IB diploma in high school, and was very shocked from my GPA grades in my first year of uni. I also failed one subject and received ‘pass’ grade for the rest, hence resulted in bad GPA scores. So I tried my best for the second and final year to pull up my GPA grade, but I always thought I was way behind from all smart kids..and had no confidence in what I was studying and doing. In the meantime , I never give up and discover what I want to do in my future (I also decided to study for the master program after one-year of working experience) ! So I want to tell people to never give up and keep going with the passion and your dream!! then things will go well even if you have failed. Anyway, thanks yoobin for telling your story to us, it really inspires and motivates a lot to me. I never shared about my story to others because I thought it’s very embarrassing. But after listening to your story, I felt it’s not something to be embarrassed anymore. Thank you heaps!! I really love your video!! I always turned your study with me video on my side when I was doing assignments and preparing final papers hehe. Rooting for you :) 공부관련된 팁이나 notion 설명 영상 정말 도움이 많이 되었습니다! 감사해요ㅎㅎ

hi yoobin, thank you so much for making this video!! i found your channel last year while i was deciding on U of T, been a follower since, and now it's my first finals season at U of T. i'm also going through some mental health issues and i think i desperately needed someone who's been through the same life sci journey to tell me that it'll be all okay :) i'm basically in the exactly same situation as you were in first year academically, failing PHY131 and dropping it, taking 3 courses, wanting to do neuro spec -- as i'm sure a ton of other first years also go through. this video was genuinely very helpful (especially the study methods) and inspiring. i didn't think i would find consolation from a youtube video but here we are. i really enjoy watching the content you post & i wish you all the best in grad school!

But with changes in study habits, I was able to improve my grades in my final years and I’m now in a professional program that I wanted to get into for a long time. I sort of wish I was able to watch this video a few years back, where I wasn’t sure if the goal I had was achievable, and get inspiration from your story. I would NOT advise a high school student to enter the Arts and Science program at U of Toronto. Grades should be proportional to how hard you work and that is not what happens at U of T. I had a professor in Biochemistry who gave an exam that he said would be multiple choice and short answer. However, when the test paper was handed out it was 3 major essays (nothing like he said it would be). When he was confronted about it he said it was an "experiment" to see how students reacted to "stress".

Hi Yoobin, I need your help. I don’t know how to study BCH210 and HMB265. Need some suggestions
@choyoobin
@choyoobin 2 жыл бұрын
haha i’ve been there :( here are some things that worked for me: BCH210 - i made physical cards with all of the amino acids, color coded etc. and just straight up memorized them. i drew out all of the biochemical pathways (start small and draw out 1 path - eg. krebs cycle - then once you have that in your memory move on to connecting the other pathways to it) - by the time the tests come, you should be able to visualize all the pathways, interconnected in your head. at the end of the course i basically had a hand drawn poster of literally all the pathways we learned about in class, and i could walk though it almost completely by memory… tbh it couldn’t be me anymore but that’s what i did to study hmb265 - just do all the practice questions in the text book. if you don’t understand something, talk to the prof and go to office hours. this one is more about understanding genetics concepts rather than memorizing. good luck!

i think it might exist in some courses but i’ve never experienced it in any of mine. the only deflation that may be happening is the instructor changing the level of difficulty of exams to help keep the course average at an “average”. unfortunately i can’t speak about the grading schemes compared to other schools because i’ve only attended uoft.

It depends on the school and program, but many grad programs cut off at 3.3-3.5 and many competitive ones cut off at 3.7. Personally I got as much research experience as possible (2 independent projects and other smaller volunteer positions), was part of UofTs neuroscience association (helped run a few conferences and did their social media) and got a non-peer reviewed publication through one of my upper year neuro courses. These are the things that PIs asked me about during interviews, as well as some of my presentation experience (all of which I got through my courses and by presenting my independent research projects to an abstract presentation at a conference).
