For small leaks like a barbed wire hole or a thin spot on the knee area, I still like Loon products. Dab it, put it the sun, good to go. Sealed in 5 mins. It’s not so hot for major rips or seam separation on winter waders. I used Loon for light fly fishing waders for years. Limited applicability for heavy duty winter waders, but I always keep a small tube in my blind bag.

I had some good results with rubber cement. It was all I had access to at the moment. I cleaned surface of rubber boot with rubbing alcohol. Let it evaporate in the sun. Filled the crack and surrounding smaller cracks on the ankle of the boot, then I placed a patch I cut out of a camo bandana over the area I cemented while it was still wet. Then I pressed it onto the area and added a little more rubber cement to fully impregnate the cloth patch with rubber cement. I did it in several places on both boots. The only leak was in one boot which, after further inspection, was caused by a crack I didn't before notice. Or, it was a fresh one from the day. The fabric patch seems to help hold structure to the rubber cement during expansion and contraction as well as redistribute to stress to surrounding areas of the crack. Cheap fix with small town hardware store materials.

As far as a hole in the boot I've always took mine to the tire shop and had them put a patch on it! Lasts for years.
@SurvivingDuckSeason
@SurvivingDuckSeason 3 жыл бұрын
I've done that too, and it did work once for me. But 2 other times I took mine to the tire shop and the patch didn't hold (both times banded brand). It's the same reason I stated in the video- because boots aren't all made of the same materials. If they are made of high quality rubber then you have a much easier time finding things that will work.

To repair neoprene waders there are videos on repairing neoprene wet suits. Clean everything with alcohol. Lets it dry then work on them and sometimes its easier to tear a big hole to fix it right. The black stuff inside is what keeps the water out. The inner and outer materials just protect the neoprene which is very fragile. Contact cement is what they are built with. If you look on my channel I made a short video on how easy it is

To repair a rip like that I would sew a piece of material across it with a row of stitches down both sides and then use either the aqua seal or some old similar wader material or cordura nylon with rubber cement. I am thinking about trying Vulcum 123 on my next leak it even cures under water.

3M 5200 comes in black in 3oz tubes (Amazon). In your demo of repairing that cut hole I wonder if you laid some fiberglass tape over the first layer of adhesive, worked it in then put another layer over it would give it a lot more strength to hold the repair in place from pulling apart?
@SurvivingDuckSeason
@SurvivingDuckSeason 3 жыл бұрын
the 5200 black is not a fast cure... it takes 7 days to cure... that's always been the issue with that product, and why it's not really been viable for waders. Your suggestion would be good to try. I haven't ever had an issue with the adhesive pulling apart, but it really wouldn't take much more effort to try it... especially for a boot repair!

Actually (as I do with all my videos) I went above and beyond what was necessary to provide accurate information for my viewers. My product review videos include my personal opinion of my honest experience with the product... and how it should relate in my viewers best interest. For a few years I have been looking for an alternative to white 5200 fast cure. They do make black, as well as tan (which is really pinkish), however they are NOT fast cure. They are the regular cure time of 5-7 days. While that may be adequate for some people, the majority of wader repairs are needed within a day. So for my purposes and for the majority of hunters, fast cure is important. I had a conversation with the High N Dry people to ask if they knew of any other options- since they work in the business. They told me they had be in contact with 3M to work with them in developing a tinted fast cure 5200, and that the research I had done was accurate. However, It turned out being far too expensive for them to create a fast cure black, brown etc... but the rep with 3M suggested using 4000 UV fast cure in black. For the purposes of wader repair it would be perfect. Unfortunately 3M distributes it in large dispensers which are very expensive. They did have a small quantity of 3 oz tubes they made available for sale to High N Dry which is the product they are offering. It may seem expensive to you, but there are multiple other products on the market for wader repair that are similarly priced that don't actually work.... 4000 UV does work. You can certainly use 5200 fast cure in white or the standard cure if you're able to wait a week to use your waders. But as I stated in my video, I was interested in finding a better alternative to 5200 fast cure in something other than white. As part of my research, I looked for other distributers offering the 4000 UV fast cure black, but none have any available in 3 oz... except from HND. I even looked the day I uploaded the video to make sure. So as you can see, the information I provided is accurate and is in the best interest of my viewers. I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to set the record straight.

A wader that's "breathable" (in quotations because breathable is entirely subjective and more often misleading) is completely IRRELEVANT for the purposes of this demonstration and has ZERO affect regarding the performance of AquaSeal. In fact the truth is, AquaSeal is arguably the BEST fast cure products on the current market for sealing waders, regardless if the waders are "breathable" or not. Breathable material does not react differently than vinyl or rubber when using AquaSeal - this has been demonstrated and confirmed by thousands of anglers using this product on "breathable" waders. As soon as I saw "Promotional Video" warning pop up I should have stopped watching. I haven't watched any of your other content yet, but don't be a carnival barker or one of those guys that's influenced by the product/manufacturer. And don't say you're not, you ARE this time at least. Other than that, this video was informative
