I've always lusted after one of these ever since my neighbor bought a new one in 1970. The owner said it right, this car showed the British how to build a better sports car and make it reliable and comfortable too. The Stealth/3000GT also comes to mind as far as keeping the spirit of the 240Z alive. It even copied the dash layout of the Datsun. Great video Lou!

In Japan Datsuns were always called Nissans. Datsun was the export name used. When I was stationed in Japan in 1973-75 these 240z cars were called Nissan "Fairlady" . Thanks for posting! have a blessed day.

You should come to Seattle and see my 1977 280z 2+2. Having owned it for 15 years when I watch this video I see every little thing. By every little thing I mean the things I have worked through or replaced. The 2+2 is a great cruising down the highway machine - smooth, quiet, comfortable. The vapor lock issue you reference early on is a real thing, even in the later cars with the hood vents. Still looking for a solution to that. The dash had a tendency to crack, especially in warmer climates and that is why this car's dash is carpeted. My car has lived in the northwest and still has it's original, uncracked dash, along with the original factory seat covers, carpet and radio. I wish mine were a 5 speed, but a 4 speed is fine.

Loved the Zs back in the day. Was saving up for one on my paper route. After 6 yrs all I could afford was a Beetle, LOL. Closest I got was a picture in a friends, an 80s 280 ZX with T tops in black. The vintage green is cool, a good Phx color. John is a lucky guy! The stop light race idea was funny/cool.

Another great video Lou. My Uncle had a 73 280Z with a 4 speed that I used to play in when I was a kid. I'm not sure why it was parked. It still ran and drove around the yard. It has some bad rust holes in the rockers below the doors and some rust holes in the lower part of the fenders. He gave it to my cousin a few years ago.

Hey big bro Lou! How are you there, big brother? Loved seeing you 2 guys goofing around and having fun with this beautiful little Japanese sports car. Esp. on the eve of an all-new Z car-really fitting, man! I learned a lot hearing your buddy describe Nissan/Datsun and how they came here. And I didn't realize the 240Z eventually had a bigger inline six fitted to make the 280Z. I always thought of that as the 280ZX, which wasn't nearly as pretty and delicate and sexy as this girl here. I might hafta get a pair of tubesocks with mint stripes on top for this chick, Lou! Thanks big bro, JV Johnny ;)

Years ago when NISSAN first started making V8’s in their trucks for in the USA, I had seen an early 280Z that had one of those NISSAN V8’s swapped into it and had custom cast aluminum valve covers cast with Datsun 280Z cast into them. It was an extremely well done swap

Hi, Lou! As your good friend mentioned, the original Datsun Z car debuted in late 1969 (as a 1970 model). It was the 240Z through 1973, the 260Z for 1974 only, then the 280Z from 1975 to 1978, after which it was succeeded by the 280ZX. The 2+2 was introduced with the 260. It was always less common than the two-seater, so it's quite a pleasant surprise to find one today. In that regard, John was very fortunate to have a friend who had one to sell him. I imagine you'd be even harder pressed to find a B-210, a 510, a 610 or, dare I say it, an F-10! BTW, as I understand it, Nissan did bring back the Datsun name in recent years for some overseas markets. Checking WIkipedia just now, I see it's just recently been discontinued again. Anyway, it looks like you guys had quite a fun ride through the streets of Scorchdale...er, Scottsdale😄, especially with the bonus of getting a chance encounter with that 1970 Pontiac LeMans Sport! Thanks to both of you for taking us along!

A friend of mine had a Datsun like this one, and I guess I got educated here because I thought his was a 1976 280Z, but I believe he owned his in the spring of 1975. Could it be that it was not a 280Z? I got to ride in that car, and my friend later became a policeman, and he arrested me when I was driving my 1972 Imperial during the early 1990s! This to me was a poor mans ferrari. Moreso than anything from Fiat or Alfa Romeo. It did after all look a lot like the ferrari 275 GTB. And was far more reliable than any other sports car in the 70s. It was reasonably good on gas, especially when compared to camaros, firebirds and Mustangs. The only small sports car that was more reliable and better on gas was the Toyota Celica, but the Zs were a lot better looking and had much better performance. The Celica, Prelude, RX7 and Zs then more or less caused MGB and Triumph to leave the US market in the 80s.
