I was at this game. It was a beautiful, warm day and everyone was ecstatic. And yet no one really knew what just what was to come in terms of a Super Bowl championship. The excitement for this team just kept increasing every Sunday. Those were the days!

Summerall and Madden were such professionals. They always seemed to know what to say, when to say it, how to say it and when not to say anything. Football Sunday is just not quite the same without them.

1981 was a breakthrough season for the 49ers. they finally overcame their two biggest hurdles by beating the Cowboys and Rams.

God, i miss it all, being thirty, going to SF State and being a Niner's fan in the glory days. What a great team, great coach in Walsh.

I remember this game so vividly. As a 13 year old I couldn't believe it. I waited with baited breath the next night to watch the highlights of our great victory on Monday Night Football and Howard Cosell's famous "Halftime Highlights"...nothing....bupkis. America got screwed out of watching our great victory by Cosell and ABC because they didn't want to embarrass "America's Team" on National TV, especially when they were featured the next week. Typical. The Niners were disrespected. Revenge was sweet though. We won the Super Bowl

this was the break out season for the 49ers organization...not only did they beat Dallas on national tv , but they also beat the LA Rams twice, after having lost 10 consecutive games against the Rams, taking over dominance of the NFC West that the Rams had a hold on for almost 10 years..

My friend and I went to the game thinking that if it was close, the 49ers had a chance. If not, then at least we got to see the Cowboys. We did not expect a 49ers rout. Fred Dean was unstoppable. At the end of the 1st quarter, we all stood up and applauded, but were still in shock. Did the teams switch uniforms? We heard someone yell "Super Bowl!" and thought "Uh, let's not get ahead of ourselves." Boy, was that guy right!

Montana in his prime is so freaking good. No one was better.

Madden!! What a gem!! And to hear him behind the scene asking the director for closeups on certain players during commercial breaks… so cool!! And the commercial break off air chatting between John and Pat…!!! Thanks for posting this beauty!

This was the first niner game I ever went too. My parents took me and my sister. I was 11 years old at the time. The niners were a bunch of nobody's. Dallas was the big bad Cowboys. As the game unfolded the stadium was a mixture of joy and disbelief. This really was the turning of the tide. The team would go on to lose only one more game the entire season on there way to a dynasty.

John Madden looked so young!! I loved the 81 season. Went to 81 championship game and saw the catch! Awesome times!!

I remember this game well...a lot of smack talk at school because my boys took a beat down! Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks, and Carlton Williamson did a number on Drew and the fellas!

Weeks later the '9ers crush the Steelers and many feel that was the changing of the guard - the end of one dynasty and the beginning of a new one. But I think this game was the beginning of the 49ers '80's dynasty. The blowout of the Cowboys was the first top team they took down - when they probably first believed THEMSELVES that they were a great team. I think this game was the birth of the dynasty. The Steeler game was the significant changing of the guard game, and SB sealed it that they were THE team to beat. Great copy, Richard Waldrup! Im 59 years old and I remember this game like it was yesterday and I remember thinking they had finally gotten over the top of the hill by beating the much hated Dallas windbags! I think I even hyperventilated!

Igor would pay $ to hear the commercial banter between Summerall, Madden, & the truck. That's how good Pat & John are.

Way different game in the CS. Bill Walsh play calling at the time was way ahead of any defense that could stop it the birth of the West Coast Offense Brilliant

I met Joe Montana at PITT Stadium in the 70's and I always pull for him, one of the Best Ever and in his heyday he would gain yards running the ball a Great Field General.

The 49ers were 3-2 coming into this game but would win all but one of their remaining games en route to the Super Bowl. Never did I expect at the time that this would be such a rout. Revenge for the 59-14 loss the previous year. Fred Dean and Ronnie Lott had an amazing game here. When Roger Craig came to the team a few years later, the 49er offense was even more potent. Now it's been 40 years and I still love watching this game and the others of that era. Freddie Solomon's pass at 17:30 was one great play.

The best short passing team ever in San Francisco. Joe Montana has been doing this kind of thing since Notre Dame, so it was a shock, but not necessarily a surprise to me. We should all know it only takes one play to mess up a team psychologically, and that's exactly what happened. In other words, may I be so bold as calling this a "death penalty on the field(referring to the death penalty that happened to SMU)" for Dallas and a "new era" for the 49ers.

This is the game I became a niners fan as a 8 year old kid living in DC

I was a kid from Cincinnati watching this game. I was a Cowboys fan because of Tom Landry and Tony Dorsett and Danny WHite. Had the Cowboys won they would have played my hometown Bengals in the Super Bowl and i might have rooted against my hometown team. That Dwight Clark catch brings back bad memories. Of course I rooted for the Bengals in the Super bowl twice against the 49ers and continued my hatred of the 49ers into the 90s when Deion Sanders switching teams was enough to make the Cowboys beat the 49ers.

Ohhh I remember this day..as a Cowboys fan... we became the 49ers measuring stick. Afterwards... everyone took the 9ners seriously.... Plus the confidence in the NFC Championship. Key Game. To this day... the Cowboys are everyone's measuring stick. I remember my Dad saying. Remember Joe Montana after this game.

The title says "1981", but with Summerall/Madden in the both, the graphics, and some of the players names, it seems like just a few years ago.

Even for non- Niner fans (with the exception of Dallas, of course) this game was a classic...a changing of the guard... a perennial powerhouse of the 70's grew long in the tooth and lost to a rising Dynasty..yes, Dallas did reach the NFC championship game the following year against Washington and lost, in a strike shortened season but at that point were on the decline after Roger Stauback retired after the 1979 season...Danny White was a decent QB but not the one to lead them to the title..facts are facts, the rest of the league got better than Dallas...Washington, SF and N.Y. Giants would prevail in the 80's..just as the Packers were the team of the 60's, they too got old and became mediocre..the same can be said of the Super Steelers in the 70's...when the 80's rolled out, they got old and their stars started to retire one by one...ALL great teams eventually reach an end..at the present time New England is done while Kansas City is now on top in the AFC...nothing lasts forever, good or bad!...but it's great to see past history and see the greats of the NFL...like Joe Montana...thanks for loading this...I saw this game when I was in college...football was great then

This was Pat Summerall's first 49ers regular season game as play by play. His last 49ers regular season game before this one was in 1973 vs. the Vikings but then , he was an analyst. He worked that game with Jack Whitaker who did the play by play. Summerall did call a 49ers pre season game as play by play in 1976 vs the Raiders.

I was 13 at the time.Come over to my brother's place (He was 18 rabid Niner fan) Its midway through the 2nd quarter and his eyes were gleaming and he says "We are going to the Superbowl" and I was like "Nawww...REALLY?" Then I saw the score and I was convinced.

Also Fred Dean's 49er debut after being acquired in a trade from San Diego; and what a debut it was (collecting 6 sacks). Not bad for a guy at the center of a bluff Bill Walsh gave to John Madden about how the 49ers supposedly wouldn't use Dean much since he just arrived.

Hard to believe both teams met in the NFC championship title gm.(the catch that broke Dallas Cowboys fans hearts&Vin Scully broadcast that gm. With stu Ham &was probably one of the greatest gms.ever played in San Francisco, CA.28-27 was the final on jan.11th.1982& still a Cowboys fan !

Hilarious! Never realized at 15:08 Lawrence Pillers causes the fumble on Danny White and then Jim Stuckey recovered the ball. In the NFC Championship, that same exact thing happened with White fumbling due to Pillers and the Stuckey recovers it to seal the game.

It was good to fumble the opening kickoff that year. Niners did it in both the NFC Championship Game & the Super Bowl.

This is the first time I've ever seen this type of broadcast. I think they are (were) called "direct feeds" and you could tune them in on the old satellite dishes of that era.

There are just some days that not only does nothing go right, everything goes wrong. This for the most part was true for the Cowboys in this game.

One of the most dominating performances you will ever see in an NFL game. Dallas could not block Fred Dean or move the ball at all on the San Fran's defense. Of course, these two teams met again later that season in "the catch" game. This game signalled the end of Dallas and the beginning of a 49er dynasty.

I didn't watch this game when it was played but I remember the highlights afterwards,back then anytime Dallas lost big it was big news and the whole country cheered.They were the team everyone hated during the 70's and 80's,at least first half of the eighties because they were so good.Kind of like the equivalent of the Belichick era Patriots
