Hi there. My name is Susan Hellervik. I'm a nurse practitioner in cardiology, and I do this wonderful work because I love taking care of patients and I know I can make a difference in their lives. Cardiology entails the care of patients with cardiac and vascular problems. These can range from atherosclerosis to arrhythmias and other issues, and a big focus is on prevention so that patients don't end up with these problems later in life. One of the things that is very important to me is to help patients understand exactly what is going on with them, what types of tests we're doing, what the findings mean, and how to find a treatment plan that will work for them. I know that this can be a scary time for patients, and I think that having good information and patient understanding is key. Having a heart problem doesn't have to be a scary thing. There's been so many advances, both in treatment and prevention, that we have lots of ways to help patients maintain their quality of life.
I am new to Louisville, Kentucky. I came here from Nashville, Tennessee. I received my master's in nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 2009. When I'm not taking care of patients, I enjoy my family, including a brand new granddaughter, and spending time outdoors and reading.
