Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery") is the centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with a lacquer that is dusted or mixed with gold, silver or platinum.
Our value is not in our perfection. Kintsugi highlights the breaks and scars in a piece of pottery and in many cases those highlighted repairs make the piece even more beautiful and certainly more valuable.
In this wasteful, throw away culture we seem to have developed into, it is eye opening to take a look at how this Japanese art-form places such value in repairing and making whole what would have been discarded.
Embracing our imperfections and seeing them as a part of our unique history and what has made us into the person we are, helps to remove us from the idea that our brokenness needs to be hidden. Hiding emotions and trauma has been the cause of many a life ending before its time.
I believe that our creator sees our struggles and our breaks and desires to bring healing without shame or judgement. He is the master joiner and can put together the shattered hearts and minds that created those physical and mental scars. Christians should be able to see the pain and brokenness in themselves and others and through connection with the Healer, bring healing to a broken world.
The process of Kintsugi requires attention to detail and it takes its time. It is not an easy process but one that changes our way of seeing brokenness.
Morty Bachar and his lovely wife are artisans who own a pottery studio in Delaware and can explain much more about the actual process of Kintsugi. www.lakesidepottery.com
My focus in this song is to state that we do not become junk that can be discarded when we go through a difficult time or a trauma. We are valuable and every scar is a reminder of how strong we were to have come through what we survived.
And if you have not yet understood this, then let this paint a picture for you that helps you see that your scars do not define you but are a reminder of what you have overcome. You are being made unbroken and you are beautiful.
Lyrics:
I see the face that you’ve carefully crafted
All the cracks so skilfully masked
Insecurities that others have planted
With careless words designed to make you feel bad
You’re worth so much more than what you think
Ev’ry ugly thought you capture and change
Becomes a pearl just like an oyster creates
Something precious can come out of this pain
Don’t let the world tell you who you are
Don’t be conformed by the words they’ve spoken
I feel your hurt and I see your scars
As the art of Kintsugi you’re being made unbroken
You’re being made unbroken
I see the eyes that were clouded with fear
Being brightened and relieved from strain
Shattered pieces of your mind, and ideas
Gently joined and brought together again
There is hope as long as you keep breathing
There’s no hole that’s too deep to climb out
There is light after dark even when you can’t see it
You are loved so don’t give up. There’s someone here to help
Don’t let the world tell you’ll stay broken
They can’t understand and they don’t know
Your pain and scars are so much more than just tokens
They’re the things you’re gonna use to heal and grow
You’re being made unbroken
Unbroken
Unbroken
