As Sontag said at the beginning, I didn't know much about the affairs between Serbia and Bosnia in the 1990s too. But now I'm reading Clark's The Sleepwalkers: How Europe went to War in 1914, and I see that these conflicts have existed since at least the mid-19th century.

Only the functionally illiterate or the college educated aliterate do this. Generally, these are People who have some belief or attitude about women who think and speak publicly, who do not appear in some conventional setting or role assigned to them. Sontag is not customary, she doesn’t fit the mold. Visually, she is tall and dark and dresses plain and modestly - at least in public! She has a private life, rather torrid with men by some accounts and devoted to her son. Sexual freedom is still something frowned upon in women. In My experience of her essays, biography, interviews, filmmaking and teaching - she is direct, which is interpreted as confrontational; unconvinced by weak or emotional arguments; not seeking favor or flirting; and put simply, displaying all the attributes that usually are admired in men but mocked, even punished in women. That’s just my opinion of course but like her ( I hope) I’m not afraid to say it. I happen to find that kind of straight no chaser attitude in girls and women charming exactly because it is unusual. And most interesting, because she is a woman - there’s no physical threat attached to her intellectual or ethical stubbornness. She’s not pulling a gun on you because you don’t agree with her. How nice is that😉

Sontag died of cancer in 2004. She was the last person in the USA who could be called be a public or popular intellectual. Most people today have no idea of what "intellectual" means except to blast it negatively. These people have no time to read so they wouldn't read or know about Benjamin Moser's recent biography of her which just won the Pulitzer Prize. People watch, don't listen and write comments which are a clear indication of the dumbing down of American culture (if we could even call it culture anymore.)

@@5103jerry Each nation is plagued with it’s own traumatic past which still affects the psyche of our modern world today. Humankind history itself is paradoxical in how we achieve peace, that in order to stop something like the axis of evil in Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy. We’d have to slaughter millions of people and drop a nuclear bomb on regular civilians which included babies, children, animals, etc. I mention all this because fixating and defining legacy through the atrocities of nation is just as myopic as claiming it’s ideal and perfect with no containing flaws. We need to acknowledge and examine the good, the bad, and the ugly

@@stephania4940 What sort of activist plans a trip to a war zone --- a seemingly highly-visible trip because she's doing an interview about it on national television --- without knowing what she wants to accomplish there. It would be like John Lennon and Yoko Ono holding a sleep in, and not knowing what their goal is. She's a pseudo-activist who really just wants to travel and observe for her own intellectual and cultural satisfaction. If she really wanted to help people why wouldn't she, say, work at a food relief center cooking? Or, she said she has no medical training ---- but she could volunteer providing non-skilled support at a medical treatment facility.

This lady (like many other western "civil rights" workers and politicians) did pure propaganda presenting oversimplified version of the war finger pointing only to Serbs as a bad guys and all the other sides as a victims. If you would know just a tiny bit of a history in Balkans you would start getting a headache and run away from the topic as far as you can. Actually all the sides (muslims, Albanians, Croats) made ethnic cleansing, murders and massacres in ex Yugoslavia civil wars during 90s. Get informed, hear all the sides of "story" not just one, it is much more complex than it looks like at the first glance when "they" present it in mass media in black and white version...
