Hi, I would love to see some editable sight word games or activities. The curriculums continue to change and along with that, the order of teaching sight words and the sight words themselves. This would really keep it focused and purposeful. Love your Sunday Spotlight!!

At the beginning of this video, I make the mistake of saying Heggerty also has a phonics curriculum. From my understanding, it only has a phonological awareness curriculum! I didn't realize I had added the word phonics in there! For a good phonics scope and sequence, I suggest using the LETRS sequence for word study, reading, and spelling. Also, I recognize that blending and segmenting syllables and onset + rime are phonological awareness skills, while phonemic awareness skills focus on each individual phoneme! Just wanting to clarify a few of these things!

I would love to hear more phonemic awareness activities. I have students that really struggle to hear how many sounds are in a word. Especially when you get to more than 3 sounds.

Thank you so much, Susan. I’m a Math Specialist (Grades 2-Alg 1) who has taught children and trained teachers since 1973. I’m retired now and working at a therapy center as a tutor. Recently I was asked to begin tutoring Reading. (YIKES!) Your work here is already helping me tremendously. Again ... thank you so much!

I’ve purchased your games and love them! I would like to see activities or ideas that we can use to build/increase student fluency. Students know the pattern but lack fluency to help them when they read.

Susan, I love your videos. Thank you so much for the tips on teaching phonemic awareness. To review skills already explicitly taught, I would like to use more games in the classroom with my Kindergarten students during literacy stations. I would also be interested in editable sight word games and activities. Several of my students have difficulty hearing more than 3 sounds in words. Any suggestions? Your activities are focused and very purposeful! I am interested in purchasing some of your games from TPT!

Thank you Susan! I love all your videos- they always give me so many great ideas for my classroom. I’m so glad you mentioned Heggerty because I used that phonological book a lot when we were in the classroom, but haven’t attempted it during distance learning because being able to hear the students chorally on Zoom has been impossible. I would love to offer my students letter tiles to use during our phonics instruction and I know how beneficial it is for them to be able to manipulate the sounds in a word. However, I’m not able to provide a class set for my students- it’ll be too expensive to purchase. Do you have any ideas for good DIY letter tiles that I can perhaps make? Thank you for all that you do! You are amazing!!

Phonemic Awareness and Phonological Awareness Skills aren't the same thing. Phonological awareness skills can be divided into four different areas: word, syllable, rhyme and alliteration, and phonemic Awareness. Then reach of those is further finished into separate pieces as well. I talked to a women who has been teaching reading for years and she couldn't tell me what they all were without looking at her notes. It was frustrating to say the least

That is not true. All the items you listed are phonemic skills. Phonological skills are more much deeper and macroscopic. As a result, phonological skills are not surfaced until you learn other languages. The reason is that sounds are, by their very nature, “short distance” features, they are limited to “next to each other”. The differences between syllables and words are pretentious and false.

Phonics first or phonemic first. You, together with most, prefer the former; I vote for the latter. The argument for the former is that phonemic does not need print. But I believe that argument is reductionist. Modern human has the tool of letters, why not using them?! It is waste of time! Worse, you are torturing them! Let them have fun, do not “teach”. Then, try to teach them letters as soon as possible. Then, teach them phonics. Then, (advanced) phonemic skills, such as rhymes.
