Suspension pinch bolt removal (using a ball joint press)

Hi I'm Matt, this is a short video showing how I have removed a seized suspension pinch bolt on my Volkswagen Passat ( A common problem with these cars)
I didn't recorded it at the time, so today I thought I would share the tip by making a small video on what I did.

Ahhh....Nice! Clever alternate use for the Ball Joint press. Thx to both you and Dave for mentioning that in your last Vid. I know you didn’t need to take the time to demo that technique in this instance but I appreciate that you did. Cheers Matt

Hi Dan they can take some time. Pushing on the bolt with the clamp, then taking the clamp off and tightening the nut again on the bolt (repeating this back and to movement) while soaking in maintenance spray. Until the bolt gradually moves more and more untill it can come out. Thanks for watching

Thanks for posting this. Am I the only one who doesn't understand your G-clamp method? Don't see how that would push the pinch bolt out. Audio's not great so not sure what you are saying. Thanks.

The pinch bolt on the VW Passat and Audi A4 are known to be difficult to remove, usually they are hit out with a hammer and punch, in this video I used a ball joint press to remove the bolt. It didn't come out in one go, I had to take the ball joint press off and tighten the bolt back up whilst re spraying with WD-40 a few times, but eventually the bolt came out and it was in good enough condition to reuse the bolt again. This is just an example, it was rusted in the first time I did it, this worked for me so I later made a video incase it helped someone else

Had my first fun experience with pinch bolts. Snapped them right off on a a6 c6. Tried beating it, tried pressing it out with washer and nuts but all to no avail. Eventually drilled it out with larger and larger drills and that bitch came out. Man what a crap design. Although the suspension itself is superior to Mcpherson

I worked at VW, basically the same, even when the cars were new they were very tight, after seeing people eventually miss the punch when swinging a hammer and hit their hand, I decided to come up with another method to remove them. They don't get any better with age either. Drilling takes some time, but when it's the only option left, what else can you do. Thanks for watching and your comment.
