世界的な「セキュラーな仏教（everyday Life 生活仏教）」のティーチャー（講師・作家）として知られる、イギリス人のスティーブン・バチェラーさんの訪日を記念し、アメリカ人で浄土真宗の研究者で僧侶でもあるケネス田中師との対談を開催いたします。

secularな仏教のあり方についてはバチェラー師・田中師は四聖諦の解釈などほぼ同じ考え方と理解しました。立場が大きく異なるところは死後の世界についてでした。バチェラー師が死後の世界について不可知論を取られていてpureland（浄土）を認めていません。しかしながらバチェラー師は作家として執筆しているときに何かが書かせてくれている、命の力が訪れていると感じていると言われており、これは田中師が常々言われている「大いなる命」に触れられているのではないかと思いました。この対談は仏道のあり方を理解するために大変参考になりました。通訳のお二人も素晴らしかったです。

This was very interesting, and the concluding thought was something to think about: was Shinran a secular Buddhist?

I felt reassured by Tanaka-sensei's comment about the nature of shinjin. His acknowledgment that Jodo Shinshu may lack a method for approaching shinjin, apart from just listening, was interesting. There may be a nexus here with Zen, where realization is always accidental and zazen makes one accident-prone. I'm not advocating the zennification of Jodo Shinshu, but I like the possibilities of Zen practitioners noticing Other Power and Shin practitioners counting our breaths.

I think the man Professor Tanaka described was half joking. But when Jodo Shinshu is noticed at all in the West, it's often misread by Christians as the Buddhist sect that's LIKE a deficient form of Christianity. It's surprising that the man who said that was a Buddhist. "Oh. My. God." would indeed have been a wonderful response.
