That's a part of the issue that doesn't seem to be mentioned at all. It's not just that the movies aren't good. If it was only that, then why are the movies that are well received not making money? Movie tickets are outrageous compared to a decade ago and most of these flicks end up on VOD within a month or two. People who don't have the expendable income are going to go with the cheapest option. This is really a case of bad economics combined with bad business decisions, combined with an industry of creatives who aren't creative, led by people who don't like to take risks. As George Carlin said, "this is circling the drain time".

@@ShahulHaq Just saw demographic numbers that like 72% of Furiosa's audience was male, and it makes me wonder maybe these movies are shooting themselves in the foot by forgetting to pander to the actual people who show up and watch these movies (men). Maybe it even explained Fury Road's somewhat poor box office numbers despite being considered one of the greatest action movies of all time. I have no problem with the female leads in Fury Road/Furiosa, they are done well, but strong female characters are not bringing women to watch these movies. It's insane to me that Hollywood is somewhat forgetting and costing themselves billions in the process (Marvel and Star Wars do this x10 worse). John Wick knows its audience well and gets rewarded greatly.

Here's why movies are flopping... Why pay $18 per ticket times 2, per couple ($36), plus the price of simple refreshments ( maybe another $20) , so you are up to $56-60. Dealing with annoying people that don't realize they are in a cinema, not their living room, that talk and kick and have their lit phones on during a movie you paid good money for. Then that same movie is put ON DEMAND 4-5 weeks later for only $20 and you save money and don't have to put up with annoying jerks that do not respect the "movie going experience". Either make ticket prices less, police the theaters, or stop the instant ON DEMAND!

@@animelover48348 On the contrary, Hollywood is obsessed with representation which is what you're talking about. Hollywood thinks they're correcting an imbalance by featuring more under-represented groups and giving us characters like the girl boss. They think they are giving more people a chance to see 'themselves' on screen, and that representation is one of the most important things to audiences. But as it turns out (and which everyone has always known) women just aren't anywhere near as interested in action movies as men are, regardless of who the main character is. It's like thinking that if more male characters are the protagonists of romance films, suddenly more men will want to watch them. It doesn't work like that. Women can be great action hero protagonists if done right, as the classic examples of Ripley and Sarah Connor prove.

When I see a male actor in an action film, he should exude masculinity; likewise, a women should be feminine. It's not that they removed Max, it's that the script is lame. We have no insights into how Furiosa become such a badass and killer by the time she was 9. No insights into how she becomes a badass climber. Mechanic. Driver. Road Warrior. They skip over all of that and we just take for granted that she's awesome without having to learn, fail, or grow. Show us the secrets about the tribe she comes from. Show us how imperators are selected, and rise to greatness. Instead the same old Mary Sue treatment. And the last scene in the desert was the lamest writing of all. "You stole my childhood!" Post-apocalyptic tribes wouldn't talk that way. The male prostration and female rage were also heavy-handed.

I wanna add that it's a bad franchise to put such a huge budget into. Mad Max was never a mainstream success and doesn't have the recognition of spiderman, wolverine or even deadpool. It was an 80s trilogy wihout any more matterial till 2015's Fury Road, on top of that even the original trilogy was never a blockbuster. Also Hollywood has managed to lose audience trust with all the mediocre to bad movies it has given us in the last five years. Combine that with high ticket prices and an increasingly bad cinema experience -in opening nights there are tons of teenagers 12-18 that consider "funny" to make noise, throw popcorn etc, that ruins it for me so I have stoped going to the movies (ok maybe i am getting old and ranting about this).

And people are shocked by the result. Color me surprised, at the people that are shocked. Anyone with half a braincell left could have seen this coming.

Frankly, this was one of the best movies in recent cinema. Arguably, as good as Fury Road. I don't argue for a lot of movies, but this movie was well worth the watch. It's "Flopping" had nothing to with it being bad and I would posit that it had nothing to do with Anya Joy. I thought she played her part well. Though, every other character was completely overshadowed by Dementis. Mel Gibson returning to Mad Max would be awesome, but one thing should be kept in mind here is this: The Mad Max movies were never about Mad Max. The only movie about Mad Max, was Mad Max. That was the only movie told from his perspective. The other movies are told from another. Mad Max is a folk here and his story is told by others that Mad Max encountered. Fury Road was told from Furiosa's perspective and Furiosa was her story of becoming. So, to call it a Mad Max story is fine. I'm not sure what else you would call it, since The Wasteland was not established yet and will likely not be given the chance thanks to Furiosa's financial flop. I will argue that Hollywood is not doing well, but the world is not doing well. The American economy especially, is not doing well and when entertainment, as the last bastion of our escape from the grind of the world is so costly, that it reminds you of how crappy things are, it's no wonder theaters are not doing well.

All I ever see are women with a grimaced. dirty face, and stoic attitude who are rougher than all the men. Im soooo tired of that trope. Then of course they had the matriarchal Utopia of MANY MOTHERS, and the W. MEN ARE THE BAD GUYS. Are you even serious? I could care less how gory or brutal. If its a woman doing the revenge its silly, and the only people this appeals to are weak men who fetishize amazon, and fantasize about a big strong woman who can protect them like a mother.

Make him jaded but not like luke skywalker. Give him a reason for him to want to save them and not the typical "girl shows sad old man the way" trope. Could even make it that he didn't really care about saving her in particular but he is just on a violent rampage against the raiders or he encounters them, they try to attack him or steal his car, he invades their camp and encounters her and they team up.

Surely many people feel the same as you. This happens because we tend to make associations based on our past experiences. When I was a child, for me the Disney brand was synonymous with high quality films and animations. The simple fact that a film was from Disney was enough for me to be interested in watching it, simply because previously I had good experiences with Disney films. Currently for me, Disney has become synonymous of woke films and whenever something new comes from Disney I get scared. The same thing happens with films with "strong female protagonists" I always assume that the film will have a strong feminist approach, where men are always represented in a negative way as inferior, stupid, or just immoral and problematic.

@@jmazuryk I don't think those are adequate comparisons. "Star Wars" is a setting and a universe where thousands of stories happen. "Mad Max" was the name of the titular character, not the setting. The setting is The Wasteland. So, a name that didn't seek to use "Mad Max" as bait would be something like "Furiosa: A Tale from The Wasteland" or something like that. And while it is obviously seeking to hook people that like the setting from Mad Max in, it is not a "Mad Max" movie. ...also, Solo bombed HARD, so it might not be the best thing to bring up...

@@Chaotic42Kami 'The Wasteland' as in the Wasteland featured in the recent Fallout series (& all the games)? Maybe ur not up on the post-apocalyptic genre but calling something 'the Wasteland' is like calling grass green. Doesn't matter if it bombed. The point was a man's name was needed to sell this movie. I disagree, in this use case it's the name of the franchise. Again, what else would u call it? (Hmm, this just occurred to me- is the name of the universe actually 'Star Wars'? Otherwise what's the problem of calling it the 'Mad Max franchise'? Isn't it the 'Terminator franchise', not 'the franchise set in a future where Skynet takes over'?)

@@jmazuryk The Wasteland of Mad Max predates the Fallout universe by at least a decade, but I was just pitching a random name. And most of the Fallout games have specific names for their little slice of the post-apocalypse. Fallout 3 had The Capital Wasteland, Fallout New Vegas had The Mojave Wasteland, Fallout 4 had The Commonwealth and Fallout 76 has Apalacchia. Don't really remember if Fallout 1 and 2 had a specific term for it, but it happens in California, so maybe... Anyways, my point was that the Mad Max franchise is (or rather should be) about the character of Max and whatever he is doing in the Wasteland. Unlike with Star Wars which does lend itself to many different stories and protagonists. It's like if I pitched a movie called "Mina: A Dracula Saga" about the character of Mina Murray (Jonathan Harker's fiancée and one of the main characters of the og Dracula novel) and ended the story before Jonathan even left for Transylvania. Sure, the movie and story might be good, but I'd still be using Dracula's fame to try and hook in an audience that otherwise wouldn't care about the movie.

Its not about money if a movie would be amazing and you super hyped you would go to cinema, problem is the quality is gone in Hollywood for sooo many years now

At this point it doesn’t matter if it’s a good or bad movie when it cost $100-$200 to take your family out to the movie theater. On top of that we see Hollywood for who they are now and it’s disgusting, we can’t un-see it. As long as they continue the same behavior and push out garbage and/or agendas most people won’t waste their money.

That's exactly what it is.... economy sucks and certain industries think they can increase their products/services and it will still be able to hold its own. Not the case. Ppl are boycotting industries...not with their voices, but with their pockets

And it’s very easy just to watch it for free online. I will definitely go pay for Deadpool though.

I took my kids to see Garfield (which was very entertaining) and it wasn't even $60 with snacks and drinks.

Garfield movie is likeable coz it didn't change d nature, behaviour of d character which was established years ago n they didn't insult the fans or the people who go on d first day of a film...it's so simple, stick to the origins, don't change the male character into female n don't have a director who never read d comic book on which d film is made. Its like hiring a softwares engineer who doesn't know shit about computer n softwares, that's exactly how Hollywood n Disney selected d directors of superhero films, best example a shit called Marvels

I'll just tell you why I personally didn't go to it: I am not particularly interested in watching a story and characters whose ending is 100% known. There are exceptions in the spirit of historical drama or comedy. But with the Mad Max franchise, I didn’t have the desire to go to the movies precisely because of the predictability. I knew from the very beginning that Furiosa would survive. From the very beginning I understood that her lover would die. I knew from the beginning that Joe would win. I knew from the very beginning that Dementos would lose. I knew from the very beginning that Furiosa's revenge would be successful, and it was. This film is an action movie but it is predictable from A to Z. And that's what makes any action movie - bad. Predictability

Studios are expecting their movies to make 400 million at the box office. That’s not going to happen. It’s ridiculous. Movies with snacks can cost almost $75 for two people these days.

Yep. Pouty-faced woman does not say "cool" to me. It triggers my customer service PTSD and says: "Oh good, brace yourself for a long, boring, and extremely repetitive conversation with a person who has gone 30 years before learning to take the word 'no' with grace."
