Good video. Love the new update on the 9 Peak Pro. I actually went from Vertical - Polar V3 and ended up with 9 Peak Pro. It's just great now after the update.

Lag improvement and better mapping really puts me wanting this - enduro 2 may have the torch but I want something different for a change 🤣 been on the fence for a while but this has probably made the difference…!

I’m heading up for a long hike and overnight camp around Skiddaw next week so I can’t wait. GPS accuracy is brilliant for me when doing a couple of days on the mountains.

why not Garmin? I have a feeling, that they are far ahead of Suunto (unfortunately). And after several videos of their Epix Pro g2 the watches from Suunto went down from my list

@user-yd1cd8gq8m depends what you value! Garmin are miles ahead of the market on many features. But I’ve had the GNSS chipset fail me more times than I can count on two hands out in the mountains. I think people who value gps accuracy, gps reliability, pin point navigation with topo maps & the best battery life on the market.. those people would find value in Suunto ❤️ Hope that helps 🔥

TY for the reply. I am just curious, what Suunto does with their navigation chips/antennas/algos differently. Garmin doesn't support the Chinese? navigation system, but still reads the data from 3 other providers (gps, glonass and galileo}. But what else is different I have no clue

I'm on a Suunto 9 (Which is old, but works) but wanted the Vertical. Early reviews re the lag stopped me getting it, but if they've fixed it that is huge!

Hi @Activeideas, Great detailed overview of the update! One question: is the sleep analysis now the same on the Vertical, as on the Race, I.e. will you see the different sleep stages that you’ve had during sleep, and will you also access that info in the app? Keep up the good work!

A super observational comment ❤️ I just double checked to be sure as it’s been a while now and confirm that the Vertical still doesn’t fully measure stages or naps. Doing a little deep dive into why it seems “the Race uses Gomore algorithm. Vertical uses new Suunto algorithm.” So they’re running two completely different models and it’s yet to be unified across all their model devices. I’m sure they’r on it but I also would love to see it seen as I nap a lot and do prefer the Vertical for daily use. Thanks Gustav 🌟

Sounds like a plan! The vertical is going to be a massive update from the 9. The Enduro 2 is a fantastic watch for ultra but the Vertical must be doing something right. I follow Zach Miller (one of the best ultra runners alive) and he’s just made the transition from Enduro to Vertical 🔥 Good luck with your next Ultra!

Thanks for the explanation @ActiveIdeas , i have bought the Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar watch Black and with it I have no problems, the only thing that fails is the blood oxygen that reads 88 or 94% when in reality I am at 96 or 98%, but the rest is perfect

Ahh yes I’ve seen some funky things with blood oxygen too. Usually if I tighten my watch above wrist none & sit still with my hands resting on my lap I can get a better reading. Glad you love everything else ❤️ Best of luck with your adventures mate

I’ve just read that the update for Race has potentially been delayed again 😅 So I think I’m just going to upload my thoughts so far 🤣 I tried to be patient 🤣 quite honestly they’re both great.. in 2024 I’m racing the Arc Of Attrition and UTMB’s Snowdonia and there’s no doubt I’d rather use the vertical. However, for everything else.. I think I’d choose race.. one feature I really like is that the flashlight is about 4 times brighter than the Vertical and I use the flashlight feature multiple times a day. The Race battery life has also been fantastic despite the super bright amoled screen. It’s also cheaper 😅.. you’d have no regrets biting the bullet early 👊🏽

Only one watch!? 😅 If I was spending more than £600/$750 I’d sway towards Garmin 7 Pro (despite the crazy gps issues I had with it in the mountains), I loved the flashlight and copious amounts of data. If I was spending less I’d probably sway towards the Suunto Race.. it’s a breath of fresh air, I’ve had positive comments on its looks and it’s overall been fun testing! One issue is HR accuracy but it is JUST good enough to let it slide.

Great video. I have a question - The always on display on the vertical, is it a full display or is it just the time that shows like the Suunto Race?

The vertical never “turns off”.. like an Amazon kindle or a calculator screen it can display images without light 🤯 Therefore it will always show a “full display” even when the backlight is off 👏🏽 The race is different. In its factory settings mode I believe it turns off screen when not in use to save battery life (completely black screen). You can however change the settings to “always on”.. this is slightly different to the vertical.. it still goes into a “dormant” mode but will show vital data in sports modes, still show breadcrumb trails in maps and will still show the watch face (just less brighter instead of a black screen) Hope that made sense, hard to explain in comments ❤️❤️

I haven’t got a clue if this update has improved the HR accuracy 🤣 But I’ll keep my eyes on it with the testing & report back 👍🏽 I definitely believe a smarter HR algorithm would iron out the data so fingers crossed 🤞🏽

I personally prefer the 955 for daily use.. it’s a much more lightweight and has more training status features. However, for hiking I prefer the Suunto Vertical for it’s insane battery life & gps accuracy so depends on what you need! Thanks for the comment Magi! 🌟

If the price is similar you’re probably looking at the base level Steal Epix (doesn’t have multi band GPS and no titanium ). If this is the case definitely get the Race. However, if you’re looking at the Epix Sapphire Titanium or Epix PRO Gen 2 and you’ve got a similar price.. get the Epix 👊🏽 Hope that helped 🔥

Would be great to hear your experience on HR accuracy. That sounds like it is a major let down on what otherwise seem like great watches from suunto.

I’ll start by saying my average HR and my Max HR on my run/cycle workouts are usually spot on with the competitors and the gold standard HR straps. However when I look at the actual data.. it’s unforgivably messy haha. Clear delays in detecting HR spikes and falls. What this means in practise is that all your training peaks data is going to be perfect, this will work well. The issue, however, is for LIVE HR, I just wouldn’t trust the numbers and definitely wouldn’t pace myself off it. For pacing on Suunto I’d opt for running power (arguably better anyway). You can pair HR straps for those super intense workouts and anyone taking their zone training seriously would probably use this method anyway. For the price of the Race you can get yourself a top of the range strap and still come in cheaper than Garmin’s Epix range. But back to the point.. it’s useable.. but it’s about time for new technology 🫀hopefully when/if this is developed they add ECG/EKG too 🌟

@@ActiveIdeas thanks. I was hoping they maybe updated the algorithm too, improving them. Definitely wouldn't train by wrist hr - but occasionally on a long run I don't bother with the strap. So knowing my wrist hr is close can provide a second opinion as it were if I feel like I am gassing or going too easy by feel. And much more importantly, in that regard, my watches are more than just sports devices, they are lifestyle trackers too. If the ppg cannot be trusted, how should I trust things like my resting HR and daily max - or my HRV night time reading on the race.

Been testing for absolutely months now.. HRV is working great which is a relief! well… I say it’s a relief.. I’m currently suffering from tonsillitis/flu which the HRV picked up before I felt symptoms.. I ignored, continued to train (the HRV tanked even more) and now I can’t get out of bed 🤣

Hey Mitch! Yeah there are some crazy deals on the Vertical! $529 amzn.to/3R09jjc (FTC in description). Personally, yes, I would get the vertical because of the races I do.. just finished the summer spine race and in January I’m doing the Arc of Attrition 100 miles. However, if I wasn’t doing long races like this I’d probably go for the Race. It’s a refreshing breath of fresh air with nothing like it on the market, it also comes in at a fantastic price point. Only issue is you’ll notice the reduced battery life coming from the Enduro 2. Im actually uploading a Vertical vs Race video on my channel tomorrow, maybe that will help 🔥 Cheers again 👊🏽🌟

@@clitaiulian4497 I was having issues with the Enduro 2 freezing up when trying to use the touch screen feature. It would affect a running activity etc. Garmin replaced the watch. All is good to go now. I did get the Vertical, they are comparable except for the Verticals HR monitor is not that accurate but I use a HR chest trap so no issues.

Great review as normal. The big question is, Garmin Fenix 7 pro or the Vertical for ultra running (best mapping) I do a lot of mountain running. Bob Graham next year hopefully.

If I had to choose one for the Bob Graham round I’d probably go Vertical for a few reasons. Firstly the Fenix 7 Pro lost GPS acquisition multiple times during my Summer Spine Race.. I’ve never had this happen with Suunto. Secondly, the battery life is better on Suunto (on the spine I had to charge this watch about 6 times). If you use optical HR though, Garmin is worlds better than Suunto. Garmin is also better if you run into trouble (no cellular and the trail is blocked) at re-routing your course.. it can be done on the watch and without a phone connection. But with something like the Bob you would have planned these contingencies anyway. Good luck with it Mike and if you want some support on one of the legs I’d be happy to help 👊🏽

@@ActiveIdeasI know you mentioned that at some point but was it under bad weather, dense forest or just high up in the mountains? Or all of them? 😅 I’ve been with my Enduro 2 in the Alps last year for 4 consecutive days high up in the mountains (above 3000 meters) and no issues. But I had good weather. Will be repeating the experience again this summer.

Hi all, I have a question about using the ruler in a map WHILST in a sport mode (i.e. trail running). Is it possible to use touch screen to navigate around the map? | wonder if there is a configuration I habe missed, because using the ruler with the navigation buttons instead of my finger, I find it impossible to accurately select a point. Thanks for your help.

Have you tried going to the running sports profile and before you press start.. click on battery. Change it from best to custom .. in this custom mode then change touch from disabled to enable (or map only) for the activity. This should help your map touch screen issue ❤️

Gosh im so torn between the Suunto vertical and the Garmin instinct 2X , i like the simplicity of the 2X but i like the mapping on the suunto vertical ( not a fenix or epix fan )

If you like simplicity, seems like Suunto Vertical is the way to go due to software. Think it looks better than the 2X too.. I do love that on time mode the instinct 2X can last forever.. that’s well cool 🔥

I’m can’t decide between stainless steel and titanium, while I love titanium material and a black color. What do you recommend?

Titanium every time for me. I’ve always gone titanium for the weight (saving 12g) and comfort. Also, the titanium model comes with solar and with Suunto the solar isn’t a gimmick.. up to a year in watch mode 🤯 but from general/normal use you’ll see massive better improvements over the steel version 🔋There are soon good prices for the titanium model atm, check my description 🔥 Hope this helps

Strange. I do find mine resets every beginning of the week (disappears) until I’ve done a couple of runs and then it reappears again with the racing time estimates. 🤷🏽♂️ Maybe that’s the case but im pretty sure the TrainingPeaks data not reflecting what the Suunto app says is one of the bugs being addressed in the new Race update. Should be here soon 🌟

I sure wish that Suunto would offer the "Race" and the "vertical" in an all white and all black color option, both the wrist strap and case. I'm disappointed. I like the 49mm case size but would like to see the screen size be closer to the same 49mm

They do offer an all-white Race called the “Birch” colour and both the race and vertical have all-back options 🔥 The screens on both are great, I do like the vertical though as that dead-space between the screen & the case edge is the solar panel so you feel like it isn’t wasted 👊🏽

Does the vertical stainless steel model have solar charging? I looked on your link and it says solar charging. I thought just the titanium one has it?

I just doubled checked and no.. solar is only in the Titanium model. I definitely recommend the extra spend.. the solar isn’t a gimmick, I’ve been getting crazy battery life. Suunto themselves claim 1 year battery life in time mode 🤯 the 12g more lightweight titanium is a welcomed comfort on the wrist too 👍🏽

Just had a look and YEAH! Both the Vertical and Race have ETA as an option. You’ll need to create a custom running sports mode if you want it though 👍🏽 Takes a few seconds to do 🌟

As far as I’m aware ETA is only available during an activity (might be wrong, I’m still fairly new to Suunto).. surely that makes sense though because without any history of your moving speed how is the watch supposed to know what time you’ll arrive? Whereas in an activity the watch can extrapolate .. ‘oh he’s taking 40 minutes to do a 10k today so should take a few more hours to arrive’. If that makes sense? 🤣 Can confirm Distance to destination 100% works in both navigation mode and in activity mode for both watches 👊🏽 Hope this helps mate 🌟

This wasn’t clearly stated in this update patch and up until this point it hasn’t been great, so I assume not but I’ll definitely test the numbers and report back 👍🏽 It can definitely be improved with software too.. from using it long term I can see the algorithm patterns it makes which if were adjusted slightly would improve the crazy readings it sometimes gives.

Unfortunately that’s just the way the screen technology is. You’ll see a lot of people debating g MIP (memory in pixel) screens vs AMOLED screens.. the benefit of MIP is insaaaane battery life! The being it of amoled is how bright and vibrant they are 🌟 Hope this helps

Depends what you’re after.. for the price, bulletproof build quality, insane gps accuracy, titanium/sapphire, phone app design.. yes I’d go Garmin if you’re looking for more data, HR accuracy and flashlight 🔦

Dude! The vertical is on sale now but the Race looks so much better. The new Polar v3 has a poor HR sensor. I could buy a Garmin Epix also, not sure what to get.

Decisions decisions! Yeah I’ve seen the Vertical has some good sales going for it 🔥 I wouldn’t get the base model Epix but if you’re seeing solar sapphire or the Pros for a good price that would be a major major go! The Vertical and Race are a nice breath of fresh air and a good choice considering the price 👍🏽

If you’re looking for a watch that delivers on battery life, I believe the Vertical 1 will remain king until at least later this year (at the very soonest). Complete speculation here though 👊🏽🌟

I like the SUUNTO in term of quality and price no one can beat them. But for heart rate and sleep accuracy it’s terrible and it doesn’t have daily suggestions workouts. If they fix these issues I think they will dominate the market.

Agreed, the price and quality are unrivalled! 😍 Yeah, the HR has fallen behind in accuracy compared to Garmin/Apple.. although it does somehow seem to get the avgHR & maxHR so definitely is usable but the datapoints in between are often quite far off. Daily suggestions would be cool.. Suunto Coach is no slouch though.. can be very useful if you’re logging lots of training 👍🏽 once the update for Race comes out I’ll do a whole video dedicated to HR 🌟

@@ActiveIdeas don’t have a strap, during fitness I use the one for finger HR sensor and it’s much different then on Suunto, yes tactix is nice, but the navigation on Suunto is #1, will go back to Suunto Vertical, it’s just simple and I think good enough, I had the race one, but the crown hurts on hand :)

If Suunto is going to increase sensitivity on HR(anything according to heart activity measurements .. even O2 blood saturation) I would like to give them a chance ... Garmin is the best atm. ... but: it is ugly(fenix, epix) and just one, Tactix, I visually like, does not have the actual fifth optical HR sensor in transreflexive(in my opinion it is the best diplay atm. ... very bice coloured but not so power hungry as AMOLED freakshows ... ) variant.

According to DC rainmakers video that update was supposed to be here on Monday TWO weeks ago haha. But I’ve been keeping an eye on the forums and believe it will be realised any time now 👍🏽 Yeah the Garmin screens are great.. if you get one of their new pro models they actually have updates MIP screen technology so the colours pop a little more.. and the clarity of the numbers is abit better 👍🏽 Anyways, stay tuned for the Race update video.. it will be any day now 🌟

I agree, I actually prefer the old way of doing things.. if you swiped up/down/left/right something would happen.. now it’s all been squeezed into up and down (plus a pinned widget). Definitely makes sense for the race (scroll wheel) but for the vertical it’s quite a lot long list .. there is also an issue where the down button is down but then sometimes it is a back button🤣 I guess this UI is more like Coros and Garmin so makes it less to learn for people transitioning from Suunto 🌟
