Transform your car on a budget with all the necessary equipment to be comfortable during your camping or overlanding trip!
Meet Maite,
She's a 2000 Ford Explorer that I have converted into a overland camper for a trip to Mexico.
The idea of this build is to be autonomous for a few days and be able to setup your camp in just a few minutes.
This setup features :
Twin Bed
Sliding Table
Kitchen on a drawer
Heated Solar Shower

I like that the bed 🛌 platform is low so you have headroom to sit up on the bed while still having Space 4 some storage underneath.....and good use of the space on either side. A very sensible build.

I can finally say I have found a favorite build in an SUV that is approx. the same size as my 2018 Subaru Outback, give or take a few inches. This is really beautiful, so well organized, and a lot of thought & planning went into it. Congrats on building a very comfy home for your travels. Stay safe!

very practical setup, what's your biggest pain in the rear end during your trip? not being able to cook during bad weather, or lack of a bathroom, a lot of my friends are considering starting a van life-ish trip, but there are too many uncertain factors. I hope you can sure some pointers.

To have room to work with, did you simply fold the second (and maybe third) row of seats down? Or did you have to modify the interior, disconnect wires, remove chairs, etc to make the surface flat both on the floor and on the sides where your cabinets are?

Only 586 likes?!!! This is amazing. I love the build out. I plan to build out my Crosstrek within a few months. The sooner the better but I don't think it has the room this vehicle has. Thanks! You should build it it's a lot of fun. I don't have instruction for the shower I build it myself but it's pretty much PVC pipes glued together with a tire pressure valve and a hose connection.

Awesome job...I have been planning to build out the inside of my 04 GMC 4x4 pickup. The shell is awesome made in Elkhart Ind. Got a screaming deal on it. My trk is 6x8 bed and I am 5'2"..(yes. I a girl) I have watched sooo many of these builds but I do love yours.. I watch "Suboverland"..Awesome channel..do u sell ur plans? Only difference is I am single so only need bed for one, I am a killer cook..😋 ..sorry Forest, u r a good cook too, can't tell if it is the cooking u love or the eating..haha..Br I an loves the cooking too..anyway the kitchen is my priority and yous looks fairly easy..looking forward to more of ur builds...Donna

Thanks, You can find the 3D plans in the description, nothing fancy its just 2x4 in a cross patern with a plywood sheet on top. Then the cabinet is separate and drop on it!

So awesome. Can you please tell me how you made the cabinets and their sizing? I’m having a problem with this as the ones I’ve found are way too wide. It looks like yours may have been purchased already made (like the ones holding the clothing). Can you tell me where you got them? So I'm currently designing a setup for my SUV conversion as well, and really like this setup. Only question I have is, in case of an emergency if you were to need your spare tire. Is that setup easy to come out and put back in?

Yes, it's only dropped on top of the inside. In this car the tire is underneath the car which makes it eaier too

Hi! I absolutely love this build! I'm going to be doing basically the exact same setup in my 2007 Ford Explorer in the next few months and traveling with my dog. I was just wondering what type of plywood you used for the build and about how much it cost you for wood and hardware at the time of your build. Was also just curious if you took out your 2nd & 3rd row seats for the build? Tia! :)

How's it going for you?! I have the exact same vehicle and I'm going to build one too!! Mine is def going to be less complex in the sense it won't have the shower but I have a couple things I'm going to do to mine. I've been doing carpentry with my brother these past 4 months renovating houses, and we have scraps so I'm going to be using that (but I will be getting a few extra things), I'm going to give mine a laminate floor that's not actually waterproof but it'll look cool, and then I'm building in the bed by stacking two memory foam mats and then using sheets as sort of a cushion cover, building it right into my platform so it looks clean. Then I'll be getting basically 5/8ths butcher block to make into a slide out that has drawers underneath and a few other things. Something that I came up with that I think is genius is a swamp cooler of sorts, I'm going to find a way to make it so that it cools my car using only a fan and ice without making it muggy. I just thought I'd share since we're in the literal same boat. I'll let you know on this threat what it costs me

@lancelot Priet Great set up! I'm curious how you mounted the spice shelf --did you drill into the plastic interior of the car? I'm considering adding shelves into my SUV >> just not sure how much wieght it would hold, and what mounting hardware to use. I'm leaning towards dry wall mounting and/or cieling hook mount to lessen the chance of the screws pulling out from the plastic. --Any thouhts?
