THE CHRONICLES

Күн бұрын

Well, as sad as it may sound, the Osaka portion of our journeys have come to an end. I'm glad it ended the way it did but it was time for us to move back over to the Tokyo-side of Japan. As we approach our final major event at Tsukuba Circuit, we stop by over in the Mie prefecture to pay a visit to Top Fuel. If you watched my videos from my last visit to Japan, I had the opportunity to see Top Fuel for the first time. It was such an epic visit that I made sure to go again so that Der and Kristian could see this place for themselves. After Top Fuel, we made a stop at a local restaurant that we had previously frequented multiple times before. The food was always good considering it's the only restaurant out in the middle of nowhere. Since the pandemic, however, it's changed a little bit-to say the least. Eating there was an adventure in itself...

Most videos on KZfaq are ones that I watch once and never really have the desire to watch again. The Chronicles videos are the exception. I can watch these videos multiple times. I feel like that's a real testament to the quality of the work and the hard work put into them by Joey. Thanks!

@@yokai8896 Nah, I'm not a fan of RWD and AWD converted Hondas. I'd rather just get something that came with those drivetrains stock. Not only are you not sacrificing the trunk for a fuel cell, etc, but you have the peace of mind knowing that the chassis was designed to properly handle the associated stress. Besides, I appreciate FWD for what it is, I don't look down on it; I see it as just a different driving technique to master.

For those of you who keep insisting that you would save these abandoned cars and don’t understand why no one else has, let’s look at the actual logistics of this: Theoretically, based on loose estimations, this is how much it would cost you (very roughly) to “save” one of these cars from Top Fuel… We will use the blue EG shell for this example… -Top Fuel will sell you the shell for $2k. It’s not negotiable because they never wanted to sell it. You just insist on saving it. ($2,000) -it doesn’t roll or have suspension so they have to move 4 cars out of the way to get it out of their yard. They’d probably charge you but they’re generous. You do need a tow truck though. Tow to go from a port city to Suzuka, Mie and back to the port city, anywhere from 3-5 hours away, that’ll be $1,000, not including toll charges ($1,000 + $500 toll to and from) -To export, you need paperwork. Guess what? This Civic has been sitting for over 10 years, it doesn’t even have any papers. You want to fix it and drive it in your country, you need a Title. It’s not just a parts car. To leave the country, you’ll need to do a VIN swap with a car with a title. That’s not cheap, and the legalities of it vary. A body shop will charge you $2-4k for this, and that’s a low number because a VIN with paperwork is essentially having another car, so you’re paying for that plus labor. ($4,000) -Once you have a title, you’ll need someone to do all the paperwork for you. Because you don’t speak Japanese. So you have to pay for another tow to another yard where they can store the car for you until you have all your paperwork done. Let’s throw out another low number. $4k, though I’ve seen companies charge up to $10k for this type of job. ($4,000) -Paperwork is good so you have to pay for a tow from where you had it stored to the port for exportation. Maybe you have a friend who will do you a solid so I’m not going to incur that cost. To drag it onto an enclosed trailer, put it in there and ship it overseas, one way, is $4-$5,000. If you can find some other parts to put in the container to sell, you can make a few bucks. But you’re not in that business. ($5,000) Okay, so far, you haven’t even received this rusted blue EG shell yet and you’re already in $16,500. The project hasn’t even started yet, so tell me, is it worth saving? The car hasn't even touched U.S. soil yet and you're at $16k. Someone told me that the shop is famous so that’s why I don’t want to save the cars sitting out there. Okay, so say you were down to pay $16k for a rusted Civic with a Top Fuel decal on it. Why? The car never had any historical value or significance. Even if the prices and number values were all inaccurate, would you be willing to go through all that trouble and the trouble of bothering people at Top Fuel just so you can come up on a “cheap” project from a tuning shop? So many people ask if they sell the cars and why they would just leave them there. Well, it’s THEIR property. Its value is based on their worth to them. If it’s a storage bin now, it’s a storage bin. If it’s rotting outside, it’s rotting outside because that’s the choice they made. Your savior complex has nothing to do with their want or ability to fix them based on their needs. It’s not your’s to decide and they wouldn’t sell it to you just because it’s a lot of work just to make a couple bucks. On that note, thanks for watching, LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE because that's more realistic! LOL.

Personally I lose a lot of respect for companies, and people, that create graveyard cars to rot. It is their property, so they're responsible for it. They shouldn't even be building anything new until they deal with the old stuff.

I know you are saying these cars aren't being wasted. But would you feel the same way if these cars were in someone's yard in America in a lower socio economic part of town and belonged to some hill Holly with a beat up old Chevy truck? Or is it only considered not a waste because a famous Japanese tuning shop is letting them rot and you have a bias towards their actions?
@THECHRONICLES
@THECHRONICLES Жыл бұрын
Peoples shit is their shit, it’s not my place to say what they do with it and I’m not out here to save anything that either isn’t mine or isn’t worth saving. It’s nice when they have historical value to them and someone wants to put in the effort to save them, but if the owner wants to keep it and not do anything with it, that’s fine too. It’s not my business. I’m just here to document car culture and history, I’m not a restoration business. That would be like me wanting to save LJ Garcia’s Civic that was found stored a couple years ago. It has a ton of history and a lot of value to me because it’s a part of my past growing up and seeing it at car shows, but it’s also not a project worth taking on in my opinion. If it’s restored, then what? It’s just gonna be a novelty item that’s just going to sit and rot again. With those cars out at Top Fuel, there isn’t even history attached to them. They’re just old projects or cars that were left for parts. A lot of people just want a cheap project with a shop name attached to it so they can say they brought it back to life but they don’t know anything about those cars in the first place. There is no intrinsic value or historical significance behind them at that point.
