I bought this 1997 suzuki 650 savage with a bit of an engine noise....a few of our subscribers said these bikes had issues with the timing chain and tensioner, so I pulled it apart to have a look. with a pretty simple mod to the tensioner, the bike is back to running and sounding like it should! 🍻

Excellent video that every LS 650 owner should watch! I had the same problem. Another weak spot of the engine is the starter clutch gear. The gear tends to break - happend to my bike. Suzuki solved the problem from 1996 on with an improved gear that also fits in the older models. So, if your LS is pre 96 you should replace the shitty gear with an improved one. All the best, cheers from Germany 👍

LOL, it was me who made the lift comment in the previous video from seeing it cluttered. The first thing in this video I seen it was on the lift and I thought I wonder if he seen the comment I left then you talked about it being a bench, storage and such and it made me chuckle. Thanks for sharing these videos especially the vintage sleds , always worth the watch.

That's awesome that you got it figured out. New tires are a good idea. You don't wanna have a blowout and eat the pavement. It's like Red Green says asphalt is an unforgiving surface, it doesn't matter who you are if you slide across it you're gonna have a bad time.

rejet that carb for more fuel. it's lean now with the open flow exhaust. lean = heat. heat = melted piston ring grooves. and just to play devil's advocate... one can bump up the mediocre 29-31hp with a few simple upgrades. punch the jug to 95mm and stuff the bore with a wiseco high compression forged 95mm piston for a 1995 dr650. Port and polish in and out. open the restrictive throat in the exhaust. those mods applied properly will yield a solid 40+hp scoot that will make the Hardly boys rethink their life. good video man.

They generally make a lot of noise long before they grenade, giving plenty of time to do the work. It's a pretty easy fix, thankfully. the tensioner usually needs attention between 10k-15k miles, it's weird because there are some out there with way over 15k, so maybe abuse has a role to play, I'm not quite there yet, but prepared @10.7k.

that is the "adjuster", not tensioner. the 10mm bolt you removed is connected to the tensioner, which is hinged on the chrome 8mm bolt, same side of engine. The hole the bolt passes through has become ovoid, allowing excessive movement. Check exploded illustration.

@vansantsam
@vansantsam 2 жыл бұрын
If your chain has stretched that much then it needs replacement.. When your chain stretches it also changes the valve timing.. Doing the tensioner mod is only making matters worse and eventually the chain will get extremely bad.. Imagine if it is bad enough that the valves are open when the piston is at TDC - that would not be good at all.. If you are going to fix it, then do it right the first time.. Or if the chain wears and stretches so much that it get weak and breaks while doing 60mph.. This jerry-riggin stuff is bull shit.. Someone else is going to copy this method and eventually totally ruin their engine.. It is sad when people think they are out smarting engineers, when this condition exist then a correct fix is needed to prolong the life of the engine and also for safety reasons.. The chain has reached is useful safe life and needs to be replaces.. An over stretched chain also starts to deform sprockets.. Some say that you can get a few extra thousand miles with this mod - but at what expense? It will then stretch so bad that the sprockets will get damaged on both the crank side as well as the cam side.. Now you have major problems.. It is better to give up a couple thousand miles of chain wear and save destruction of the sprockets.. Contrary to some beliefs - it is not a design flaw, it is designed to prolong the life of the engine if the correct maintenance is done - replace the chain..
