Greetings and thanks for being here - glad the review was helpful. You won't go wrong with the DRZ, especially if you are coming from a similar bike already. The other bike that I've recently been riding is a KTM 625 SXC - and it too is in the 300lb range, but has a kick start as well as electric, and is just incredibly torquey. If you see one, check it out before making a purchase, but keep in mind parts and maintenance is more diffiicult. Good luck to you.

The DRZ was a pleasant surprise. Right now I'm riding the KTM 690sxc which is only about 35 lb heavier but similar off-road performance pushing another 50 plus horsepower.

I particularly am grateful for your tip since my carpal tunnel syndrome is getting pretty serious although the braces do help. I might do a video on that since I assume it's a fairly common problem with riders. I'll look into your recommendation as well. So don't let this intimidate you - I too am 5.8 and 32 inseam.I made a tutorial of how to clean the carb and also instal an aftermarket desert tank for the DRZ. I have reviewed most of the 650 ADV thumpers on this channel, so please take a look through my videos - I find the BMW XChallenge to be a very worth competitor to the DRZ. Thanks for watching. It's actually not a blanket but a seat cushion made out of wool which the Aussies are famous for. It's not motorcycle specific but they make plenty that are. Other option is the airhawk style but all these raise you higher.

Great point - not all small vehicles can or should tow. But the great thing about these bikes is that so many bike racks have a weight limit of 400lb permitting the carrying of this bike. That was actually a big reason for me getting a lighter bike - I can carry it anywhere we go as a family. Thanks for this tip, and thanks for being here and for participating in the conversation. @@pegasusmotorcycletours I actually got a tow hitch installed on my 2018 Subaru Outback with the intention of adding a motorcycle tray / attachment to it (cuz i REALLY didnt want to pull a trailer, and most importantly, STORE a trailer ) only to learn later that the 'toungue-weight 'rating for my vehicle, is maximum of 200 lbs.. (tongue weight being the MAXiMUM weight / downward force that my specific vehicle's back end is rated for, meaning, an attachment that does NOT have wheels (like a trailer) and ONLY relies on the car's hitch to 'hold up' a load (nothing touches the ground other than your standard 4 car tires) . Mind you, the actual capacity of both the installed hitch, and envisioned bike tray was WELL above that .. 500/700+ lbs if i remember.. so forgive me if this is old news to you, you do have to go by your vehicles 'toungue weight capacity' .. its the weakest link in the setup.. Its pointless to put a hitch / tray rated to 1000lbs, or whatever, if the tongue weight capacity for that vehicle is only 200 lbs. .ive heard bad stories about bent frames, and scrwed up body panels from folx trying to overload their car.. again, if this is already known, disregard ;)

Well put although in my book sub 300 pound machines are hardly pigs. It's all what one is used to - for me this has been the lightest bike I have owned but I have since picked up a KTM SXC625 - same in weight but loads more power - pretty much in love with this bike. For me this has been the lightest motorcycle I've owned, and until my recent purchase of the Honda CRF 250 Rally, also the one with the smallest displacement. So it's all about perspective. Of you watch my review of the Yamaha super Tenere, it helps to tour on a big heavy bike because you'll see that 600 pound plis machine get thrown around by the wind in Eastern Sierras. Yes , it would make more sense to get the bigger bike if you intend on riding the highway often. The decision between a DR-Z and a DR has gotten more interesting over the years. Procycle has shaved a custom-suspended, big-bored/cammed DR down to 320lb curb, and also offers wider-ratio tranny gearsets for both big Suzuki dualsports. DR-Z500Ss can put out over 60WHP these days too. Do you want an aluminum or steel subframe? High or low seat? Fat or skinny dualsport? To carry a passenger? The DR-Z has better clearance. It can be shaved below 300lb curb. A kicker kit might still be available for it. A DR tends to feel more planted on windblown slab. It has a little more space for a passenger. Either moto can be customized quite a bit now.

Tires are only good for 5-7 years so they would always act as nothing more but placeholders. But yes, I'd avoid putting any miles on these tires. Thanks for watching.

All great and valid points - ADV bikes ought to be simple, reliable, and easy to keep on the road. I too get pulled one way or another with each ADV bike I own - my current Challenge has air suspension in the rear, the Honda XR650L I am reviewing net has it I the front, the KTM SXC625 also parked I the garage is awesome but a challenge to find parts for. I don't mind EFI per se, it's been in the market for over 100 years actually, first used I airplanes at the turn of the century, but you are right about the fuel pump. Glad you found them useful - please be sure to check out my DR650 review - I compare it to the KLR - definitely an amazing bike - was going to check one out today with 10k miles for $2.5 - that is the beauty - easy and cheap to own, and resell. If you plan on doing long stretches of 60mph plus, with a lot of luggage, the 650 is a better bet. If you need an all around bike that will mostly be seeing difficult dirt - 400 is the answer. Depending what experience you have, if you don't have much experience get drz400 for learning, few years later you can go bigger after you learn how to handle trails good. That 650 is hard to pick up but fun if you know what you doing.

I couldn’t decide between the DRZ-400S and the KLR-650, so I bought the DRZ first, rode it 8000 miles, then bought a KLR 650 because I went riding with a buddy that had a KLR 650 and couldn’t keep up with him on the freeway or off road?? I was shocked, so, this the conclusion I came to. I’m going to keep both (which was never the plan) I was going to sell one of them to replace the other bike. But they have their pros and cons and you kinda need both bikes depending on what kind of riding your going to do. If I had to choose one…it would be the KLR 650, only because the seat is so comfortable, it has a 6 gallon tank and can go 300 miles. But I love my DRZ, its so much lighter and so much fun to take off road. If you can, buy both. Your DR650 and the DRZ. If you had to choose which one first. Ask yourself what are you going to do more? If your on Dirt more, buy the DRZ, if your on the road more get the DR650. Both are awesome bikes…

@@BoyFindsTako thanks! I actually ended up trading my suzuki intruder 1500 for a 86 klr650. Been riding around the desert getting ues to the dirt and having fun. Im now looking to get a klx 300 next year. My klr does not perform well enough on the highway to warrant how heavy it is (in my opinion). P.S. in the back of my mind i do wonder what it would be like to hop on a drz and fly up everything but im getting to the point where i want to try fuel injection. Im hoping it will make things simpler and more reliable.

Thanks - the 400E is actually a dirt version, not street legal here, so definitely not meant for the highway. I had the S version which is the street version. Does you bike have blinkers? IF it's the dirt version of the 400, then the gearing is definitely prejudiced toward low speed torque - hence the wheelies.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours it is the E version (2007 year) for sure, but with sumo tires. No blinkers nor speedo, no kickstart, conventional forks. Fun bike though!

Same with me, klr650 for long trips, drz400e for the rough stuff. Neither has cost me anywhere near the cost of replacing parts on my BMW GS1200, plus no recalls ha

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I've owned that also, very similar, the Dizzer feels like a smaller, less refined version. I still miss the LC4 but I rode the thing into the ground, selling being my most cost effective option in the end.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Yes it is fully road legal in all states, most common dual sport sold in Aus for 20 years....literally everywhere. I owned the KTM LC4 before the Dizzer, it reminds me of it, just a smaller, less refined version, without that mountainous torque but enough for me now as I'm getting well into middle age.

Apparently the E model which is dirt only has slightly different suspension and carb as well. I can't say for certain, but I think it should be a simple swap between all 3 models. I can't imagine Suzuki would design three sets of triple trees or mounting points to be different.

Hi. I'm releasing a review for f my xr650l where I compare it to the drz as well, bit not so much the super moto. The SM retails for about 7800 msrp, plus dealership markup, plus freight and assembly or whatever they choose to call it. Plus tax and document fees. So for a "new" bike, you will be saving at least a $1000-1500. It likely still has the warranty. Just ask that it is transferable.

I think your logic there is very sound - Learning to control and respect a bigger, less capable bike will give him more of the teenage male would likely benefit from early in his riding career. I did quite a few reviews of 650 thumper ADV bikes on this channel and three more are upcoming. This Saturday at noon I am premiering the review of my Honda NC700X - an awesome bike and an exciting platform for ADV touring so I hope you consider subscribing and running in - this might be a good bike for him to get learned on - it's very tame. Bike is awesome, but put the stock tires in garbage except if you don't ride street only.

Yes, this bike is perfect for beginner riders who are new to the ADV touring game because with all the gear it's going to feel a lot heavier than a mountain bike that you are used to (needless to say) but it will still be very forgiving and manageable. When you are ready to grow out of it, look into my other 650 ADV bike reviews. Thanks for being here and good luck with the search.

Dang friend, sorry to hear that - I've been there - rib injuries take a long time to heal but you'll be back at it soon enough. Take the time to learn as much about dirt and ADV riding as you can ( keeping in mind theory will only take one so far). Were you riding these OEM tires? In any case, always be sure to air down your tires when you hit dirt - 15/18 front and rear is a good heuristic but it all depends on how nasty the dirt is - if there are sharp rocks that can give you pinch flats or not - air down a little at a time and see where the bike feels the most positive. (for this reason you need to carry a pump of some sort - electric is fastest if your bike has an outlet). First step of course is to consider better tires - there are so Many out there to choose from but if you want a top of the line dirt capable tire that is long lasting and great ton pavement, The Heidenaus K60s are the gold standard. If money is a factor, Shinko makes the 704 or the more dirt oriented 804/805 option. Metzeler is another German product that is great, and the Continental TKC80 is the sexiest of the bunch. I touch on all these throughout all of my motorcycle reviews since this Chanel focuses on the ADV lifestyle. So perhaps take sometime while you are healing to go through some of these videos of mine - I think you will learn a lot in the process. How you load the bike, and even how you ditch a falling bike is all something that is learned over time, and so I hope you didn't loose fate in the ADV riding game because it's the most satisfying type of riding one can do on a bike. You'll heal and you'll become a better rider I due time, and the DRZ is a great bike to learn on. The next review is about the carb cleaning process of the DRZ (I hope you have seen the desert tank tutorial release last month) so get to know this bike in your time off the saddle so that you are more confident with it when you are alone in the dirt. The next videos planned for this year, aside from more ADV touring bike review deal with other maintenance that tis fairly basic but vital for any ADV rider, tire care/file repair, tire choices, geared packing advice, tents and sleeping options, etc etc etc. Please consider subscribing so that you can be informed when these come out - there Russo much advice ahead and I wish you a fast healing in the meantime. That is a steal. Good on you. Excellent question. I know it will require an emissions canister and blinkers. A trip or a few to the DMV to get looked over. I've never done it myself so can't say for sure in detail.

Thx Nik, yea I just hit the sub and bell. I have a new 2021 650l and did the hard (medium) Tusk bags. I have a YT channel (iffy signals) and i picked up the 650l for adventure touring around my state, we hunt for history and old home sites. Bought the tusks to carry equipment through the trails when finding old homesites. So far its been great. Ive put allot into it so far. Bags, led light, jet kit, new larger pegs, lowering link, risers. Usb ports for charging phones/cameras.. List goes on and on haha. But other than the 4.7 clark tank thats on the way its ready to roll. TC Mike

This is an O-neil dirt bike brace, and for protection I use a Bilt cheap-o bakc protector.

I've had the crf250 rally and was utterl unimpressed especially by the suspension on stock form. I did experience and upgraded 300L and that was a pleasant surprise but money was thrown into it. Thanks for watching.

Yeah, the highway capability is definitely lacking for the DRZ, but I never actually found it terrible, as I expected to. In it's stock form with stock tires it was quite alright - surprisingly so. I think tires have a lot to do with it, and the stock Bridgestones are very much street oriented. In the end there are comparable/better bikes to be had for the same price roughly, so I moved on from the DRZ, but I hope the review helps people inform their decision. @@pegasusmotorcycletours Usually people by the drz to get from home to the trail with no law issues. Most of those bikes where I live are plated and with dirt bike tires and upgrades, people are using them to get to the trails without the annoying truck load offload part. They are terrible for street riding in that shape. But you can also put different gearing and street tires and have it highway comfortable. After all there is no perfect ground for street and off road combo. I personally have drz plated with dirt tires and use it to get to the trail which is actually 40-50% of my riding, other 50% is hard trails.

Yeah, that is always going to be a trade off with lighter bikes but I got to say I was pleasantly surprised with how it performed on the road.

Did you leave the hearing stock or change one of the sprockets?

@@shea2750 Yup - completely stock save for skid plate, desert tank and rental bar. It also has a lot to do with the tires and the stock tires are road oriented.

Dont stress over it. Both bikes are easy to find and buy or sell. I'd suggest you rent one and see if its for you. What tipe of touring do you intend with it? If its lots of highway or above 60mph than the big brother is a better option. This one is today crossing from Mexico into Belize-Gene finaly is on his journey. Cheers. Nik.

Lol I did the opposite. Funny how that works. I have a 500x with rally raid kit and it's world's better than my dr was offroad weirdly enough. Easier to pickup too. Only thing is it weighs a lot more so I have to be careful not to get her stuck in a mud hole.

Hi there. If this is your very first off road bike, and most of your needs are for higher speed commuting, I would definitely recommend the 650. The DRZ is for more serious ADV touring enthusiasts who need a lighter bike for really difficult terrain. The highways speeds are also more taxing on the rider and bike on the DRZ. I hope this helps push you in the right direction. In any case, ride both before buying so you know what fits your needs. @@pegasusmotorcycletours Thanks! The DR650 is cheaper than a DRZ where I live, so I guess I'll just buy the DR. As I said, this will be the lightest bike I will have ever owned, so it'll be great regardless :D

Hi there. I don't have much experience with the versus but it will be nowhere near as capable on dirt as the drz. The Suzuki is also taller. You might be more comfortable on it. You'll have to stiffen the suspension but it's also much better on the Suzuki.

The DRZ is the best dualsport on the planet in my opinion, but when you talk adv, it just doesn’t have the legs or comfort for longer trips IMO. I sold my T7 to go back to a drz400 though, if that is any testament to my love for the drz haha

You believe the bike to be perfect in stock form? You wouldn't change anything. I'm definitely in the 99 percent group. I do slow paced adv touring.

I carry everything I need to live off the bike, eat, sleep, fix, and recreate while staying clean, fit, and satisfied while touring in any weather. I teach riders how to pack and tour long term on adv bikes. I'm. Akong a video about that too so stay tuned before you judge prematurely.

Absolutely true - incredible how poor these tires perform. I am amazed that Suzuki sticks with them despite their terrible infamy. I have owned the crf 250Rally and with a little bit of money in the suspension, it's a fantastic bike. I don't know ow the xr400. But have owned the xr650l and it's a fantastic bike albeit too tall for.me.

Honda XR400r is its main competitor. Lighter than the DRZ400 since its aircooled. Has morr HP and torque I believe? They also made a super moto version in the form of XR400 Mugen. I have both, problem is, they dont produce the XR400 Anymore due a higher emission standards. Parts are a nightmare to find.

Thanks so much for that comment, I actually just found that out a few days ago when I was looking at what's new in the Yamaha line. I was amazed by the specs when I first saw that bike, but I don't have experience with it. I wonder why they got rid of it. I would have been interested in buying one and will look for one on the used market.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I'm thinking about the DRZ400SM. Smaller wheelbase, shorter seat height, inverted forks, nice handlebars, and only lose about an inch of ground clearance. And swap dirt tires for off road. Oh, also better brakes. They improved it a bit when they made the SM in 2005. Also different rear axle adjustment. Some surprising differences.

Have you looked into the KTM SXC625? I ask because although the numbers tell one story, the actual performance can be so very different. I would say try the KTM (or wait from my review - I am in love with this bike and amazed at the performance - same wight but much more powerful). It’s a great bike for serious off road. The Tenere 700 may be a better value if you plans to spend more time on road than off. I have the v85tt for touring. Shovel head for cruising.

​@@DKrappenschitzADV and dual sport is very niche. For the price of that KTM you could buy a $3.5K DRZ and a $2.5K SV650 or Suzuki Bandit and still spend less than that KTM. Dual Sports are a blast but it's nice to also have a dedicated street bike for riding with other people with street bikes.. If you go out with a group of guys on cruisers or any street only bikes over 500cc you will struggle to keep up without straining the bike and dual sports are fatiguing after an hour or so upright in the wind at 70mph. If all you can afford is one bike and you really want it to be dirt capable it's hard to beat the value of the DRZ, if you want a great street bike that can do mile trail and fire roads look into a used 650 Vstrom.
