As a Norfolk lad I was always a fan of Lotus Cars and Colin Chapman - well his spirit very much lives on in this car, Caterham's lightest 7 to date, the Suzuki triple powered 170. Motorcycles sure have come a long way. This one even has four wheels, which is a brilliant innovation, it makes the motorcycle a lot more stable, and you wonder why they haven't thought of it before. ;-)

I had a 220bhp Caterham Roadsport for 6 years before coming back to bikes. At the end of the day a car is a car and gets caught up in traffic far more than even the slowest of bikes. And cars are hands and feet only, bikes are full body input. 👍👍

Back in October, 1967, I turned 16 and received my driver's licence for cars(I already had a sub100cc motorcycle license for 2 years). I drove my dad's Jag to his brother's British car dealership and sitting there in the showroom, gleaming in yellow with green wings was a genuine Lotus Super 7 with the twin-cam 1558cc engine. I was so excited! I jumped into it, and began rowing the tiny gear lever and clutching and pretending I was racing down the road. I was in heaven. Then reality struck as my Dad was there to make a deal for a Mini for me... Once in the 1980's I got a ride on a racetrack in a Super Seven with the Kent Ford crossflow... It was a fantastic experience, even with under 100 HP. I have yet to drive one though, so I live through the vicarious experience of fortunate professional testers like yourself. Great job, both this and the Morgan were really interesting. More please...

Very nice! You can't beat lightness in a sports car. No 2-ton behemoth is ever going to be nimble. A Caterham would be too impractical for my daily use, but a good compromise is the MX5. Super-light, 181bhp (and no bluddy turbo!), 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds, 50-50 front to rear weight distribution, the best manual gearbox in the business, fabulous go-cart 'think it round bends' handling (though I suspect the Lotus is even better in that respect), a real hoot to drive and a massive grin every time I drive it. Weatherproof as well (all my MX5s have lived outside all the time and none of them have ever leaked) with a hood that goes up and down in couple of seconds. The pedals ideally placed for heel & toe which feels so natural in the car, and despite the lightness it has all the mod cons - aircon, heated seats, ABS, TC, LSD, Bilsteins, keyless entry, cruise control etc, etc. Oh, and a small but secure boot! And very low running costs with legendary reliability (they just don't go wrong). All this for about £30K. But you do need a 'proper' car when you need more than 2 seats or need to carry a large load. So the Mrs has a CX-30! Seeing as those mirrors were so useless on the Lotus I'd have ditched the side screens to give a better open-car feeling. A KZfaqr I was watching the other day said: "the roads would be a much happier place if we all drove fun, lightweight open-top cars where you can make eye-contact with other drivers, rather than massive ugly aggressive-looking SUVs with blacked out windows". I think he had a point!

This looks like a propper version of a motorcycle (Col. German "Mopped") on two track (German "Auf zwei Spuren"). 🤗 On a student's job at a car dealership back in the Nineties, I had the great honour and pleasure to get to drive a 1955 MGA to a customer. I remember how that one put a big smile on my face, the Caterham must do that with double intensity! 🤩 …my Mégane1 convertible does that, too. And it does so with a rock solid reliability certain German brands can only dream of nowadays. The world would be a better place if everybody had Zweispurmoppeds instead of big bulky SUVs. More happy people! ☺💪

Thank you, I really enjoyed this video - about (eek!) thirty years ago, I had the opportunity to drive a Seven with the brilliant Rover 1.4 K-Series engine - about 105hp but also super light due to the aluminium engine construction. Apart from just being so different from anything else I had ever driven, and amazing fun, it is the reflection of the trees lining country lanes in those gorgeous chromed headlight pods that I remember most. I am so happy that cars like this still exist, although these days, I'd prefer a motorcycle every time...

@@TheMissendenFlyer If I am honest it was better than I was expecting Andy. A little dated compared to what's available today. A very firm ride and I can imagine the riding position would be tiring after an hour or so. Comparing it with the Speedmaster or any Triumph Twin I thought the Norton engine was a little agricultural and lacked a little low down torque but this is a minor point as both are good. The engine seemed happiest at over 4000rpm. I think the bike is very expensive for what it is and IMO if Norton want to sell these they should fit some less expensive and less stiff forks and shock absorbers (preferably black in colour) and knock about £3K off the price, then I think they might sell more. I think they are banking on the name to sell the bike, but in fairness I liked the look of the bike and the concept, but as I mentioned in a previous post, I think the bike is about 10 years behind the times. Maybe this might appeal to those who don't want any unnecessary electronics on their motorcycle, similar to the Caterham you drove above.

Heh heh, as a lad I remember helping the local garage to MoT an original one of these, a 1960 build re-engined with a stupidly 'hot' 997 Anglia lump. My job was to hold a heavy 'G' meter steady in the passenger side footwell during the road test braking runs. (Car was too light for the normal 'rolling-road' brake tests) That ride was absolutely ballistic, I couldn't believe that a 'car' engine could be that 'explosive' - talk about 'riding shotgun'! After standing it 'on it's nose' a few times, we got back in one piece & John wrote out the new MoT . . . it certainly changed my thinking on 'small engine' cars : )

So you finally found the Holy Grail of motoring, Andy 😊. I had my Caterham R300 (300 BHP / ton) as a daily driver for 15 years. Best fun with your clothes on and here on the narrow and twisty roads in the Alps faster then anything you encounter on four or even on two wheels w/o breaking the speed limit (much). Sadly reliability was a bit of an issue, so in 2020 after 80.000 km and the second engine rebuilt coming up (cylinder liners were working their way up into the head of the Rover Engine) I traded it in for my current Tiger 1200, my fourth Triumph altogether.

Many years ago I to do a lot of work on Caterham 7’s for a enthusiast who used them for track days. I use to test drive them and I just couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about, they just seamed to have all the disadvantages of a motorcycle with any of the advantages of a car. The best memory from working on them wasn’t the car, it was the heated workshop floor.

You didn't mention that these cars do come with an optional? Soft hood cover that you can drive with for when you are driving in a sudden down pour of rain. I was out for a drive on a sunny day once and had all four seasons of weather. No time to fiddle putting the roof on with it's many anoying popper clips so pulled over and waited the rain storm out by putting my golfing brolly up and sitting it out....worked a treat! Kept me and the "cockpit" dry.

I was hoping that when it said Suzuki, it would be a Hyabusa engined car. As far as a car goes, if they can't find a way to enlarge the floor area so one could use the clutch and brake without comforting your legs and feet. Looks like it has quick ratio steering.

Similar to a car I've just imported from Japan, a honda s660. Similar 660cc turbo engine (Kai car), sports car but mid engined. Not quick but very mechanical and handles like a dream. I wonder if EV's will ever evoke as much emotion, though they are quick and quiet. I live near Ragley Hall, so feel free to take a look when you come up for the adventure bike show there. Love the channel BTW.

Something different. I quite fancied a Caterham some years ago. Went as far as booking a test drive. O didn’t everyone laugh when I tried to get in one 😂. I even tried the wide body version. Those cars aren't ment for the fuller framed gent. That model you had there looked great but I always imagined having one with a Suzuki Hayabusa engine and sequential gearbox (They're supposed to be a bit crazy aren't they?)

I had hopes that "Suzuki-Powered Thrills" meant a Hayabusa. There are Caterham/Westfield type kit cars with bike engines and they (ahem) "go rather well". But I bet for a long distance tour your Gold Wing would actually be more comfortable = the seats & suspension of a 7 can quickly become very tiresome on poor road surfaces and the low view ahead can get tedious in heavy traffic if all you have is a view of the axle of the HGV in front. You should have taken Mrs TMF for her pillions opinion of the Caterham.
