Sometimes I'm lucky enough to test a car for longer than a couple of weeks. In the past I've had some great 'long-term' test cars, and the Suzuki Swace is my latest.
It's fair to say I've never lived with a car that looks quite so ordinary but is also quite so brilliant. In my six months I racked up 6,000 miles... so I think I'm in a position to tell you exactly what I think of the Swace.
The Swace is the identical sister to the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, but doesn't look as glamorous and doesn't cost as much. It's a relatively rare sight on UK roads, too.
So what did I think of my time with the Swace? Here I explain everything and give you my honest thoughts.
If I look a bit familiar then you might have seen me on Carbuyer and Auto Express KZfaq channels in the past.

After 6 months he doesn't know the B position doesn't charge battery though. It only kicks the engine on downhill for engine braking.

Ive had a Swace for 4 months now and I can't fault it. I get around 80mpg on my commute into London (in normal mode). It's a good all-rounder basically. Sure Ive had flashy high performance cars in the past, but they were expensive to run and maintain. The Swace is like the automotive equivalent of a golden retriever in my opinion.

We need more cars with small wheels. The state of the roads require high profits tyres.

I'm old enough to remember that only 15 years ago, 16 inch wheel dimension were called super low profile tyres made only for sportscars.

Hi! Thanks for your video. I've switched from a used 122PS Swace (bought in August 2023) to a 140PS Swace in March. While the old one wasn't a bad car, the new one is better to drive in so many ways. I agree, you have to get used to driving this car. First of all you must have a sensitive right foot :-) Nevertheless, I enjoy going in Sport Mode, the car is very lively, but with some experience, you'll still be able to keep it in EV mode. Fuel consumption is about 4.0l... I still prefer my second car, a Honda Civic Diesel 2018 for highway tempo (limit is 130km/h here in Austria). :-) Cheers, Günter

An accurate review which sums the Swace up nicely. I’ve owned the base model with the 140 bhp power train for 11 months and done 5000 miles which is low mileage as I’m retired. The car easily copes with the M1 M6 and a variety of other roads and has been used with back seats down to move large items which it does easily. The spare wheel situation hasn’t been an issue but just in case I bought a spare wheel package (jack, spanner and wheel with cover) over internet and which fits easily in the space provided and there is still loads of space. As I visit Wales regularly I don’t want to get caught out with a flat in the middle of nowhere. The boot floor is adjustable and can be lowered about 3 inches or flat level through out the loading area. I run in normal mode and regularly get 55mpg plus and if in town over 60mpg this is a great alternative to an all electric car. I should try eco mode but I’ve found a bit of extra power is beneficial in certain traffic situations hence the normal setting suits me best driving wise. A great car but not an exciting car, it does what an estate car should do and it is actually 30mm smaller than the focus hatchback it replaced in width. It is however longer than the focus hatchback. It actually fits in the garage better than the old focus which was always tight on the door frame. 😊😊😊

I wonder how many people prioritize fun and/or precise handling like most reviewers and automotive KZfaqrs seem to believe. Most people aren't even driving or car enthusiasts. Moreover, you can't really enjoy a car if you're struggling to pay for it and/or run it. Obviously, a car should be easy to drive and comfortable. It's great if it's a great drive. It's great if it's luxurious. It's great if it looks good, etc. But, first and foremost, it needs to serve one's particular needs, as well as be affordable to fuel, insure, and maintain. IMO, as soon as it's a choice between a great drive and say 30-40mpg versus say an okay drive and 60-70mpg, most people are going to choose the latter, even if it's their only car. I've also come to realize that if you're fortunate enough to be able to own multiple cars, they don't all have to be exciting to drive. If you've got a special car for the weekends, do you you need or even want your daily to be special? I certainly have different priorities for my special car/s and my daily driver. And my wife has different priorities again. However, the problem with hybrids like this is that indeed you need to adapt your driving style to achieve anywhere near the fuel economy promised. I'm not a big hybrid fan, nor am I a CVT fan. On the other hand, my wife very much likes the idea of a hybrid. However, while I can adapt my driving style, I don't think my wife can, and therefore while a hybrid could make sense as my daily, I don't think a hybrid would make much sense as my wife's daily, even though, left to her own devices, she would choose a hybrid. But I don't even think she likes them because of any perceived eco-credentials. She just likes the idea of them without having a good reason. Anyway, to cut a long story short, relatively speaking, if you do average or more miles a year, and are able and willing to adapt your driving style, I think it's a no-brainer for most people to choose a so-called boring hybrid like this in order to make significant fuel savings. Even as both a car and driving enthusiast, as long as I have a special car for the weekends, I'd seriously consider a hybrid as my daily driver. If my wife and I had to share a daily driver, I think a car like this would be very suitable, although I also think I'd pay the extra for the Corolla for its higher residual value.

This is automotive white goods at its best, and there is nothing wrong with that. One of the best uses of the CVT gearbox. I look after a team of engineers and this would be the perfect car for them if it wasn’t for the ridiculous company car BIK system that favours electric cars. Whilst we continue to rely on fossil fuels to produce a good percentage of our electricity, ultra efficient hybrid solutions like this surely do less damage to the environment. Good honest review Batch.

32.5% of our energy comes from fossil fuels. We are getting less dependent by the year. Stick solar on your roof and charge your EV at home and you help to become part of the solution rather than moaning that we are not at 100% fossil free so should still stick petrol in our cars.

@@presterjohn71 I wasn't moaning. I was making a valid point about environmental damage. 80% of my fleet is electric.

4.2-4.4l / 100km on country roads, under 4.0l city, 5.0-5.2l l highway. That's with the new 2.0l, the 1.8l would be about the same, better in some circumstances. The 2.0l is heavier. There are tricks to maximize efficiency, which is to get up to speed a bit quicker and then blip the throttle to engage EV only, and keep it there. That doesn't really apply past 50mph or up hill, but at low speed, works a treat. That's how you can get very good mileage in city. To be fair, dropping 30k to save fuel is a bit silly, you could buy an old banger every 3 years and come out ahead, but hey.

Hey mate, the audio only comes out of the left channel. Might be worth switching the audio to mono to avoid the issue. I wish we got this Corolla wagon in Australia. Funny that the plate on the back is still the shape they have for the Corolla C logo in Japan

Swace, the corolla looks a bit better but with a child on the way, value for money will start to matter a lot more, and the swace is cheaper. Go with the swace, and save the extra few thousand for baby items, because trust me, you'll need it.

@@costistroie I did that exercise and my local dealer is Suzuki and my son has had a Suzuki Swift from new for almost 3 years and he's been very pleased with it. My nearest Toyota dealer is about 50 minute drive from me although I have a choice of three depending on which direction I go. I visited two of them and it was all deal by appointment and they couldn't fit me in when I wanted. So didn't bother booking a test drive which they were reluctant to arrange. Went to Browning's and had test drive in Swace straight away. Was shown all the tweaks with the CVT gearbox as well as the way to use my iPhone for sat nav. It doesn't come with manufactures sat nav. Google maps is great. Just done a 160 mile trip from Mid Wales using the CVT geardox B mode and normal and eco modes and M54 M6 etc and getting 65mph plus. Read 66.5mph on this trip.

CVT is a huge cockblock for me. It just sounds awful. I'd rather have an automated manual instead of any CVT. Better yet, just give us a regular 4 or 5 speed torque converter, like in the good old days.

Time will tell on that one, if you take a five year view which is what I try to take the car may be worth a third of what you paid for it and the Toyota will be about the same I guess. So depreciation will be almost identical.

Seems the latest 'improved face lift version' is better on fuel Toying with getting another one If not an SUV If you want a comfy usable sensible estate car? Get one!
