Suzuki Swift Sport (2020) Review - No.1 Hot Hatch?

The formula required to build a hot hatchback is rather simple. A small body, lightweight build, powerful motor and the ability to make the car and its driver one element. The question then is why do so few modern-day hot hatches get the formula just right? To find out more, I drove the essence of what a hot hatchback should be, I drove the new Suzuki Swift Sport.
On paper quick facts:
• Price: R327 900 (September 2020)
• Engine: 1.4-litre turbopetrol
• Power/Torque: 103 kW / 230 Nm
• Transmission: 6-speed manual
• Fuel economy: 6.1 L/100km
• Load capacity: 242-918 litres
While the old 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol-driven motor has now been replaced with a smaller 1.4-litre engine, it’s now turbocharged and the result is perhaps the best rendition of the Swift Sport ever! Blending 103 kW and 230 Nm of torque, this latest-generation Suzuki Swift Sport packs everything you have ever come to know and love of “old day” hot hatchbacks with modern features and safety of “today's cars.”
What am I trying to say?
What I am trying to say is that many modern hatchbacks have become larger, heavier and more crammed with driver assistance elements and this often leads to their biggest downside. With the Swift Sport, Suzuki has kept the formula simple, a great 6-speed manual transmission or auto if you prefer, lightweight body and “humming” Boosterjet motor all help make a good hot hatchback into a great one. At this point, my message is getting rather repetitive, but its simply because driving the 2020 Suzuki Swift Sport is a real breath of fresh air and this is before you get onto some of the modern elements which further add to the package.
Over on the inside, the vehicle now features a 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system with Bluetooth functionality, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and steering wheel-mounted controls. At the centre of the dash is also climate-controlled air-conditioning, a great red instrument cluster, sports bucket seats and even aluminium pedals.
With its enhanced styling and weighing in at just 970kg, this rev-happy newcomer from Suzuki manages to package proper “man and machine are one” fun, impressive fuel economy claimed at just 6.1 L/100 km, stylish design and important safety features such as 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist and electronic stability control (ESC). All of this makes for a simply epic package and though not the fastest from 0 - 100 km/h, it is certainly one of the nicest HOT hatches which I have driven!
The Suzuki Swift (1.4T) Sport costs R327 900, while its automatic counterpart is priced from R347 900. A 3-year/100 000 km warranty and 4-year/60 000 km service plan are standard.

I drove that exact same car about a year ago. I even chased it with my previous ZC32s and couldn't catch it. Made me decide to get one in Champion Yellow. If anyone is thinking about getting one. Let me help you. Get It!!!! Its freaking fantastic. Took it through Franschhoek pass in wet conditions. Phenomenal handling. Sure there are faster cars but this thing is fast on straights, bends, twisties....

I got one but in Mineral Grey and I love it, not enough of an extrovert to want to stand out in Yellow and I think the dark grey suits it well :D

@@Roger__Wilco I test drove a grey demo model but the dealership wanted 325K for it. Got a 2020 Champion Yellow at another dealership in Johannesburg for 290K. Old spec though. No sensors, black roof etc. I don't miss those features though. The disadvantage of the the yellow is that it attracts bugs like crazy.

Brilliant review! I am glad to see we still have the hot hatch going strong considering how the SUV is killing other markets. That said I do enjoy my 132kw 6-speeed manual "German" / "ex-GM" Astra J sedan ;) so much fun for not that much money.

Thanks Paul, the Swit Sport is an absolute breath of fresh air in an often dulled-down modern world.

Slightly ironic that when talking about a "hot-hatch", the still shots of the car driving are what 20mph? How slow were you going? Just been contacted by my dealer with their usual "amazing upgrade offer" leaflets, but my old Suzuki Swift Sport from 2012 is still running fine for the most part after 90,000 miles.

Here's a question for you: Why did South Africa get these lame 16 inch wheels without even the OPTION of the much nicer 17 inch wheels, which are standard everywhere else?

need good roads for the 17s, im in Australia and some of our roads where I live are really shitty. After having to get 2 wheel alignments caused by giant potholes I changeg to 16 inch. Aussie one comes with 17s. Suzuki are usually pretty smart and the difference in cost for the different size wheels would be small, so im thinking suzuki may have put 16 inch wheels on your models after considering the roads in your country. Just a thought, they might look better but if they are not practical, they are of little use..

@@Greg-vj4os Having now owned the new Sport for a few months, I found out that the call was made to opt for the smaller wheel to allow for a spare (17-inch wheel versions don't have a spare), so it was a practical decision and having owned the previous model which didn't have a spare it definitely adds some peace of mind, knowing that you do have a spare as S. Africa's roads are pretty terrible too. I have seen one Sport locally that had the 17-inch wheels on it. Would be curious to know how they got them. They do look cool but I've come to quite like the 16 wheels too.

It’s a warm hatch not a hot hatch, it s only got 140 bhp.and it’s too expensive. Save the extra money and buy a fiesta st

While haven't driven a Fiesta ST, IMO the Swift Sport is properly quick. Bone stock, my SSS did 0-100km/h in 6.6s (auto version), low to sub 6 seconds can be achieved with fairly cheap bolt on mod (which I have done). This is without launch control and 2nd gear start, absolutely hilarious on a sub one ton machine. Suzuki did made a mistake of softening the Swift Sport (softer suspension and engine mount), if short suspension travel is your definition of hot hatch then this Suzuki isn't one.

@@tonyrenshaw8328 RaceChip and intake. Make sure its on 98 RON so it can run the most aggressive program. Highly recomend upgrading engine mount as the OEM is at the limit with stock power.
