Mary Hopkin - Those were the days 📜
Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And think of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Born 3 years prior to this song, it prominent song in my household during my childhood in 70s.. now hearing this and seeing those youngster in the video remind me so much of my late teen and young adult times in 80s, it doesn't help that they're dressed more or less in tune to those years.. it felt like yesterday..

Bittersweet memories. I was married with a family and a demanding job. I met my best friend from my high school days and we went for a drive. This song came on the radio and both of us started to sing it. It was if we both realized we were going our separate ways and the great times we had together were ended. Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end. But they did.

I''m 65 now (2020) and when this song came out, I was in 9th grade...to put a little perspective on it. OMG....this song just ruled the airwaves...it got overplayed 1000%. I never cared for it....it sure was different than the hard rock I loved then and STILL love now. In southern Arizona where I grew up, there was a family of 4 good-looking sisters that moved in....they were from the NYC area....and obviously they were light-years more advanced than most of the sun-baked, desert-rat kids I grew up with. I was at their house to ride mini-bikes with their kid brother...and I swear....this song would always be blaring in the background, and all these fine looking fast-paced sisters would be gallivanting around their home singing this song to the top of their lungs. They'd really get into it...really animated....just having good clean fun. You bet I lusted after them...they were the coolest girls! I remember about this same time the Lunar Landing on the Moon was also during this same time period. 1969....wow! If any of you Magrini girls are reading this, now you know 50 years later that you all had me twisted up in testosterone KNOTS!

This was one of my late sister's favorite songs. Said it reminded her of a pub she frequented in LA back in the 50s, when she was a young, free spirit. I used to call her the Original Hippie! She left this earth far too soon, but what wonderful memories she gave us. Can't get through this song without a few tears. And so I raise a glass to Maggie, Will never stop missing you, Sis!

Anita in Oregon Rest In Peace Maggie. And Anita, I'm sorry for your loss, as I try to remember when I lose a loved one: we can and will most certainly miss them, but we can also be thankful that we were blessed enough to spend time in our lives with them and instead of shedding tears we should try to instead feel the love and happiness that they brought into our lives. I know it's easier said than done, but you have to think, Maggie would definitely want you to live on as happy as you possibly can be. Music is a VERY powerful thing though and it can bring a very wide array of emotions to our hearts. Unfortunately though, songs like these can sometimes bring sadness and nothing I or anyone else says can change that. So sorry for your loss Anita, I hope you have a very wonderful life and can sometimes feel warmth, happiness, and love when you remember your sister! Take care. 🙂

This song is honest, take care of today so your future will be kind to you. By contrast, lots of today's 'music' offers no future.

I love this song from the play/movie “Cabaret”. Mary has an angelic voice. Thank you for the download. And yes, I thought the great 50’s and 60’s and 70’s would never end! They were probably the best decades in the U.S.

I feel like to cry every time I hear the song, especially by MH. I know it's because I'm old. However, my face is full of the golden ray of the setting sun, I'm sailing to it bravely.
