Awesome video! With how sensitive the flicka’s stern is to extra weight, a solid trim tab system like this looks like the way to go! Wish someone sold them as kits

You might like The Hebridean. It's on You Tub Mr V also if you ask for a kit

Sailed a Montgomery 17 out of San Carlos a number of times. Good gunkholing to the NW. Cool boat.

I could be wrong, but usually the wind vane is mounted vertically…

Yes, most are. When we were looking for photos to identify the type of windvane on our boat we saw it mounted horizontally. So, we did the same and it worked. Kind of. 😂 We know better now!

I think the vane itself is supposed to sit vertically. The rod from the vane should connect to a bell crank below the tube and converts vertical motion to horizontal that actuates the trim tab. The counterweight should face into the wind.

Thanks for your suggestion. In light wind , the vane is vertical, in heavier wind it should be angled back. (We had it too far back - horizontal.) The edge of the vane faces toward the wind.

Nice set up. How long have you owned your Flicka? How far have you sailed in it? I’m looking for one and hoping to find one in the CA. or West coast! These boats are great little cruisers.

Thank you. We love her. We bought her almost 2 years ago, and sailed her from Bellingham, WA to Olympia, WA. We took some time to really go through her systems, particularly her engine. Last fall we were able to get her back in the water to try everything out again. All was good so we loaded her onto her trailer and towed her from WA State to San Carlos, Mexico. We spent last winter sailing out of San Carlos, and left her down there on her trailer. We will be back to sail her this fall/winter. Good luck to you on your search for your own Flicka. A good place to get info is the Facebook group "Flicka 20".

I’m looking into wind vanes for my little Sonic 23. I have yet to find out how servo trim tabs effect manual rudder steering in reverse..needed under motor in marinas. Can anyone answer?😊

We lock the trim tab in place, aligned with the rudder. It works just the same as usual in reverse. I backed out of a fairway the other day, no big deal.

I got a windpilot on mine. How well does it go backwards? Can you lock it in reverse?

I'm not sure what you mean by this question. When we are not sailing with the windvane, we can lock the trim tab in line with the propeller.

is that homemade or a manufactured vane?

Good question! The vane came with the boat. No history. No manual for it. We think it may have been home-built. It is well-made, but we haven't been able to find another just like it online.

That is a Ratcliffe wind vane. There is not a lot of info out there, but people who have them swear by them. One came with my Aquarius Pilot Cutter. I’m re-installing it this week. Thanks for the great video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

It would be great to see the mechanism up close and worked by your hands perhaps at a dock as those of us who want to build our own would likely learn a lot.
