Popped a freeze plug at Barber. Needed to install a new 22mm expansion plug into the front cylinder. Hopefully I did it right. Engine is a 1999 on a 2001 frame.
Second gens have different size plugs.

Man that sucks when I read the title my first thought was I didn’t know they had freeze plugs but I guess technically they don’t but they do lol. That track is so much fun I hope you did get some riding in on it.

Oh yea, I got almost a full day. It is an incredible facility. I'm not even mad about it since I got to see the museum which I wouldn't have had the plug not popped. I'm going to try to get back there again. I didn't even throw lap timer nor camera on since I dont want distractions learning a new track. There were a few parts I feel would take years to get comfortable with going fast in. Cool thing was a bunch of motoA teams were there testing so made spectating even more fun. Yea, the sv is basically a tractor so why wouldn't it have friggen freeze plugs, heh.

I just drained my water again - because it dropped to 32 here and I realized I hadn't drained it since my last trackday - this is my worst fear, sucks that it happened at Barber, but at least you caught it before it did major damage! Here's hoping that other freeze plug stays put

Thanks man--I'm hoping it stays put too, hah. It's damned if you do, damned if you don't... If I don't replace it and it pops--well, obviously I should have just done it while i was in there. However, if I damage the head removing a perfectly good stock one... then I'd feel like a real idiot. So I'm leaving it and hoping for the best. The good news is it's actually pretty simple now that I've done it and understand it. It would be easily fixed at the track. The problem is it requires a ton of fluids and flushing to fix it. You need another ~1700mL of coolant. Then I ran 3 sacrificial loads of Rotella T4 to flush out the engine of coolant. Maybe could have gotten away with just 2 flushes. Definitely not just one. And then fill with good oil, and you're good to go. Got the bike fired up yesterday and I think it'll be fine. Actually the amount of coolant that had to burn itself out of the exhaust system freaked me out because there was a loootttt of white smoke working its way through, haha. I'm ready to roll for the next event.

@@matttriestodothings my god that sounds stressful lol - I've been avoiding starting up my bike just in paranoia of this 😅. Temps REALLY dropped here overnight and it was 70 the day before. But glad your ready to rock and roll - I've got some more race school coming up that i'm looking forward too! (And my Fuel pump is literally about to die 🤣) And is there a gasket for the valve covers that you had to take off and put back?

@@DylonND I think you're going to be fine unless it gets well below freezing for quite a while. If I'm remembering right, you're on a 2g, right? I don't know those bikes well (fuel injection, really), but it would probably be worth it to clean up the filter at some point if you're worried. I've also seen recently that people have found a decent inexpensive aftermarket one. The OEM replacements are ridiculously pricey from what I'd seen. Regarding the valve covers--the gaskets are reusable. They're thick. As long as you're not torquing the shit out of the bolts, they should remain plenty pliable for a long while. The 3 bolts on each valve cover are only 124in-lbs. Let me know how the race school goes! I'm debating on doing one this year. It's so damn expensive but I'm also really intrigued.

@@matttriestodothings yep! 2g 06, I wanted to avoid dealing with carb stuff. Yeah, I'm probably gonna take the filter out soon and replace the pump with something else. And that's good, makes me feel a bit better about doing it with reusing the gaskets, I just replaced them recently after having the valves looked at. And yes race school is absolutely worth it! Mine was one on one which was fantastic, so I had the whole day working with a veteran racer showing me how much I had to go. And I did end up dragging my knee quite a bit during the race just by following his tips and getting my body down into the corner. If they have any in your area I absolutely recommend it.

Yea, better than blowing the engine up like I thought I did at first tho. I'm glad it didn't hydrolock and bend a rod.

Thats the crazy bike I posted pics of and hi-jacked your thread on vfrworld with, haha. That will hopefully be seeing the track in force in 2025. If I'm lucky maybe late in the season this year. It has belonged to some very, very, fast and very, very, smart people that raced it at Blackhawk Farms in the past. I'm slowly trying to understand what it is. It's "the same" as my bike, but every thing I look at is different. It's wild. Hoping to gather Intel on it at the track this year to know how to even go about getting it back to road worthy after it's been sitting for about 4 years after it had a tumble from the previous person that owned it.

Can we get an update about your buddy getting the Bandit back?

I haven't seen him out on it yet this year, but I got sent a picture of his kids playing on it in the driveway a few weeks ago. I know he's been riding it. As far as I know, it's still running well and doing great. Most likely thing is that I was the problem and that's why it was such a challenge for me, lol.

@@potatonado2341 thanks man. Hopefully some of it's useful. It should go without saying I'm not an expert--just sharing my experience and the few things I learned while working on the bike. Hopefully your going thru the 96 goes well and you've got it ready to rip soon!
